Just heard today that Peter has booked Eliza Carthy and band with Mark Radcliffe for the Picturedrome on the Friday night (May 8th).

Wasn't the Picturedrome supposed to be hosting a folk club this autumn?

If I recollect the story it was available but only if someone came forward to organise and run it.
To the best of my knowledge that hasn't happened.

Do you still have to keep on the move in the Picturedrome to avoid sticking to the floor?

I haven't been for a while but I suspect so!!
All the old plush cinema seats are gone though so there's nowhere to put your drink when you watch the pictures. I think most music gigs are standing and chairs are put out for the films.

The list of artists for this year's festival is now up and very impressive (if I say so myself) thanks to collaborations with Peter at the Picturedrome and Ged at the Open Mic who have added their gigs to our already super lineup. Take a look at the web site www.holmfirthfestivaloffolk.co.uk and see for yourself.
Please note that tickets for Picturedrome and CragRats gigs are necessary and available from the contacts listed.
Any aspiring artists please note that we have more than enough for all the venues that we have and I don't keep applications from one year to another as there are so many that they would totally gum up my computer!

Peter has just confirmed that he's booked the Peatbog Faeries for the Picturedrome on Thursday May 7th so it's looking like an even bigger weekend than before.

Mark Radcliffe is a BBC DJ and certainly has introduced folk acts on BBC TV progs such as Cambridge ff highlights

What style of folk event did Peter envisage happening at Holmfirth Picturedrome in the course of normal time and what "venue" did he have in mind?

Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th
From: Cath

I'm not sure what you mean Ray!
Peter uses the Picturedrome for gigs on a regular basis and over the weekend of the festival he will have Mark Radcliffe and the Family Mahone with the Eliza Carthy Band on Friday and Ruth Notman, Jeana Leslie and Siobhan Miller, Silver Fall, Bellowhead and Saor Patrol in concert on Saturday. He has just added a concert with Peatbog Faeries on the Thursday before the festival officially starts.
Tickets for these are all booked and paid for separately to the 'official' festival gigs but even if people buy for all three gigs it will still cost less than most other festivals when you consider that pretty much everything else is free.
Hope that helps.

Good for him Cath!!

I was alluding to the statement that after last year some one was needed to run a folk club!

Folk Clubs come in all styles and varieties I would add and are somewhat different to full scale paying public gigs!

So where and what I was after ~ if the Picturedrome is the answer? isn't it a bit big?

Ah now I know what you mean!
There is an upstairs bar with full PA available and I think that is the space Peter was thinking about. He isn't going to run a club but has offered the space for anyone who would like to take it up.
Personally I don't think it is going to happen in the near future as there is already a thriving 'Open Mic' session at Number 11 which fulfils some of the functions of a folk club - not all I admit but you get a wide variety from unaccompanied traditional to pretty loud electric originals.

Taggart and Wright will be making an appearance or two at Holmfirth Festival 2009 whether they are invited or not!
Although they have not been performing for two ot three years they are still "together" if you can call it that. Anne lives in Chester and Angie has moved to Blairgowrie in Perthshire.

They decided that they would get back together for a festival this year and Holmfirth was their choice!
They guested there a few years back and really enjoyed themselves.

One of the Family Mahone plays on both of Angie's solo CDs so they hope to meet up with them for some fun.

So watch out they are about!!!!! You have been warned.

Taggart and Wright Web site is

With reference to Rob the Roadie - I'd be interested to know where Taggart and Wright will be playing - as the person who is putting the programme together I know nothing of it!!

The Lymm Festival 27th-28th June,

But she was invited to those.
Perhaps its because Anne is not with her that they let her in!!!!

So it needs a goods service. I shall be off to a secret loacation the weekend before Holmfirth F F and then after Holmfirth Beverly Beck Heratage Festival. I was a bit misleading but as far as i concerned the Summer Festivals start with HOLMFIRTH!

The timetable should be on the web site as soon as Alan has time to put it on.
Important though that it isn't taken as gospel - it's been sent to artists and no one has told me that I'm expecting them to be in three places at once. It may change slightly but not a great deal. The definitive version will be in the programme which should be out for sale (only £1 - how can they do it?) a couple of weeks before the event.
The weather's practising now so let's keep fingers crossed.

It has to be said that the Landlady has witnessed some raucous nights in the Bar of the Elephant and Castle. Her regular customers seem to have enjoyed the lively fun that has been the focus of those evenings. Yes they were noisy so it not a session for the faint hearted.

However three or four Guitars, Mandolins, the odd Banjo player Melodeon and a fiddle player doing some well known Chorus Songs with everyone joining in has been enough to raise above the chatter for some great nights.

As I think about last year I wonder if the two scantily clad ladies who they told me ran a Sex Shop in Barnsley will be paying a return visit. They told me last year that they were told how great The Holmfirth Festival of Folk weekend was from Ray Padgett and had decided to give it a try.

Speculative rumours of my demise on a bonfire are grossly exaggerated!
I'm alive and kicking and only just emerging from my winter chrysalis to face the world and dazzle you with my charm and wit at the Holmfirth Festival of Folk ( I wish!)
As I have said in my PM to Tyke I am very moved about your concern for my health and continuing existance but worry not fair friends I WILL BE at HFofF and will be on the sreets in my full colours as 'Soldier Boy'.
This is THE FESTIVAL to be at this year (just check out the programme on one of Tykes blue clickety thingamygigs on this thread)-and also remember that this festival has one of the most vibrant 'fringe' scenes of any festival where the tight cluster of pubs and hotels in this village host many briliant sessions for both singers and musicians alike, all over the weekend.
If you have'nt been before dear folkies come and join us for a weekend to remember. You'll love it.
Chris.

"this festival has one of the most vibrant 'fringe' scenes"

True, it can seem like a 3-ring circus and impossible to choose where to be at any given time. I intend to bilocate this year like St John of the Very Cross Indeed and be in two places at once.

I forgot to mention that the 'campsite' for tents/caravans/campervans etc is but a short stroll from the heart of the village of Holmfirth and that this weekend also hosts one of the biggest gatherings of morris sides in the UK so there is sure to be lots of colour, entertainment and spectacle throughout the weekend.

Also if you are a real ale fan you will be spoilt rotten - especially in THE NOOK (pronounced Nuck) and The Old Bridge Hotel. Enjoy

Holmfirth Festival of Folk

21 Apr 09 - 05:55 AM (#2615482)
Subject: RE: Holmfirth Festival of Folk May 8 - 10th
From: GUEST,Rob the Roadie

Just finalised logistical arrangements of getting the infamous Taggart and Wright to Holmfirth for the weekend. Talk about clocking up mileage and a large carbon footprint.
Angie will be driven down from Blairgowrie by the roadie while Anne will be chauffered in by Dixie from Chester. They hope to meet somewhere in a session or singaround or open mic on Friday where they will sing together for the first time in about three years . God help us. They may even practice a few times at the campsite before venturing out but then again they dont like their performance ruined by practice or talent for that matter.
Have pity on me as I carry all their stuff around for them. Just watch for the T-shirts or listen for the screams.
I have just put the campsite booking form in the post with the cheque so they will be there!

Angie was at the great GLENFARG FOLK FEAST last weekend taking in the sun while the roadie tried vainly yet again to win the World Puff-a-Box Championships. Despite being a World Champion Powerlifter (twice)
only came about 10th. Jim Malcolm won.

I have been told by Duggs that there will be extra security on the campsite this year.

Apart from the local scouts (god bless'em) and stewards on the site there will be 4 extra burly proffesional security guards who will patrol the campsite all night(with walkie-talkies),every night, and will ensure that there is no repeat of any unsociable noise or bonfires that could upset people camping/caravaning/campervaning on the field.

That's good news and should allay any fears or concerns of anybody who had any problems last year.

Good stuff!!

The Sid's Café people couldn't have been more helpful when we did the workshop there 2 years ago. They leant us extra spoons when we ran out (We reckon we had about 100 people!), and borrowed extra chairs from the church.
Unfortunately they didn't do any business while we were crowded around the outside, so it seemed sensible to move since.

Bad news or is it good news you will have to decide for yourselves! Anne cant get to Holmfirth until Saturday morning . Her husband Dixie, He is the musically talented one in the Von Taggart family, is off to London to play piano for some Ballet Dancers exams. Anyway he will drop her off en route.
It does mean they will have less time to ruin songs by practicing them!
That means you will only have to contend with Angie on the Firday night.
Meanwhile I am trying to get our camping stove to work. The pressures of touring!!!!

Dame Pattie & I had a fantastic weekend - thanks Cath and crew.
The extra security seemed to do the trick for the campsite, and the family ceilidh was great fun, and seemed to work better upstairs away from the market stalls (talking of which, no Hawaiian shirt seller this year, I'll have to source my calling shirt for the next 12 months elswhere).
Great meeting some new friends and a few old ones too!

Where was I when I missed Janets' free round of drinks? damn it!

Yes Splott Man the extra security on the campsite did work, except for one incident before they took up their posts on Friday night when one tent was damaged - MINE!!
A brand new tent which I only bought on Thursday!

Apparently some kid decided to jump or throw himself on my tent for a bit of fun and broke a pole.

That pissed me off, of course, but on the plus side one of the campsite stewards took it upon himself to do a repair job on the pole by fixing a makeshift splint to the pole so that the tent was habitable and would not cave in under a heavy downpour.

Cath and other organisers, if you read this, please pass on my sincere thanks to this caring and very thoughtful individual.
This was a very generous act and above and beyond the call of duty.
Well done that man!

So, having my faith restored in humanity, I'm not going to complain. But if the committee decide to look kindly on me and offers to compensate me for repair costs or costs of a new tent then please do PM me. I would be very happy to hear from them.

Special thanks to Shawn (might be wrong spelling) who took very good care of me when I arrived on the campsite and following the vandal incident. A very fine fellow who did a really excellent job.
Thank you.

Great to see and be with you all again.Enjoyed the sessions I took part in on Saturday & Sunday around the Town, these included, the Elephant & Castle, the Bridge, downstairs at the Postcard and of course the Nook. Back at work now with a vey sore throat.

The only down side of the event was that I did suffer from the tent attackers in the early hours of Sunday morning, fortunalty it didn't end up like Soldier boy's one though.

Any Road great to be back and I'll possibly be at Robin Hood's Bay in a week or 2.

Cheers

Muppett

Thanks to all for coming. Sorry I missed you Tyke - I never got to look in the Elephant and I never saw you in transit.
We've just been round the town and it is all returned to it's former glory - no rubbish, no mess, all clean and tidy.
The committee all enjoyed it which says a lot and we've had lots of positive comments so I suppose we'll have to do it again next year!!
In the meantime Peter is running his concerts at the Picturedrome, Number 11 is on every other Thursday (this week) with the Open Mic and a new venture has started at Hepworth Village Hall - I can't remember the guest list for this but I do remember that it's good and they do have a web site.
See you all next year if not before!
x

Big thank you to Dame Pattie and yourself for calling for the Good Egg Band at the Family Ceilidh Splott Man. The band had a good time as well as the dancers.

Hi Cath, Not surprised you did not catch me not been so well lately so I spent a lot of time on energy conservation. I was well looked after by the Family Stocks though. I was going to head into Holmfirth from the campsite after I had a shower on Saturday afternoon only to be greeted by a cloud burst.

I have only one complaint, which is that Marie Blackburn and Lucy Stocks would not let me play my Banjo. They didn't complain when I was playing it on the campsite saving them a space for their tents did they!

Muppet was in fine voice on Saturday as was Harry who we have been encouraging to start singing for the last two years. The only trouble is that now there is no stopping him. In fact a lot of friends turned up on Saturday in the Elephant and were responsible for drinking all the Beer. I can only apologise to anyone I missed out when I was organizing the Musicians and Singers Round provided by Janet the landlady. The Bar Staff in the Elephant and Castle worked extremely hard all weekend I'm sure everyone would wish me to include them in my saying thank you and well done.

Did anyone see Ted perhaps he was in the Nook which was packed out all weekend so much so I did not even try to force my way in. It's seems to me Holmfirth Festival Of Folk has had yet another successful weekend. Great job and thank you to all the committee and organizers. See you all soon and back at Holmfirth in 2010.

How did you manage that Tyke?
Your last posting was submitted in duplicate.
Is this another example of techno wizardry or just a subliminal echo from the ether ?

Thats what you get when you Ctrl C copy from a programme with a spell check to Ctrl V paste onto the Mudcat. Then you can't quite see the double paste that you have done by acident. So sorry about that George

We Came We sang We Enjoyed.

Yes Taggart and Wright behaved themselves for once.

Our week-end went like this
Friday Night Angie sang at No.11 in the Open Mic. A nice little venue.
We then wandered around hoping to find somewhere else but they were all packed so we wandered back to camp and early bed. It was FREEZING!

Saturday
Anne arrived and they did an hour or two in the campsite going over about a dozen songs they used to sing all those years ago . A few lyrics gave them problems. Old age affecting their memory no doubt. Then into town. I carried both guitars.
They sang in Stamps in the afternoon then lunch upstairs and into town for a spot at the folk club in the White Hart and the open mic at No.11. A wander around town where we found it packed again. Trying to get in anywhere carrying two guitars was a problem so we went back to Stamps to drink all the beer!!!!
Oh yes the worst of it was they NEVER used their guitars anywhere that day. I must have walked miles carrying them!!!

Sunday
Missed the spoons workshop due to lunch or was it breakfast!! But they did go to Stamps AGAIN. We left early to grab a bite to eat before heading off and actualy managed to catch some of the dancing.

Thanks to everyone for putting up with them. Thanks to Dave of Fryish for giving them time at both No11 and the White Hart and to Steve and Ray at Stamps.
Special thanks to the lovely ladie we met in the Postcard on FRiday night when they saw we were frozen and soaked and they offered us a bed for the night when they heard we were under canvas !!

Thanks for a great friendly welcome some even remebered them from years back when they guested at Rhuddlan Festival and all those years ago when they opened at the Picturdrome.

If they behave can they come back next year??

Didn't recognise Zoe Mulford until the end!

And sterling work from my old friend Lindsay Wilson and Barry Evans who did the pa

Nice to see some of the old uns such as Monologue John and Dorothy, and the genius who is Roy Blackman

Harry Wilson, I will buy you a tea at least! next time I see you, some brilliant filling breakfast from the Corner House, from early am

No but seriously thanks again to all.
Only the White Hart seemed unhappy so any feedback there could be useful - maybe best as a pm though.

Oh and apologies to Smurf. I would like to blame Phil who put the programme together or James who proof read it but I suppose I have to take the blame as I wrote it.
But if that's the only mistake of the weekend I'm well pleased!

If you encountered anyone nicking sounds by means of a digital recording device in the boozers and streets - in the best folk spirit - it was Yours Gluely. Manners suggested I ask first, the thought of stopping musicians in full flight meant I pressed record and answered questions later.

Ta!

Soldier Boy we picked up various bits of tent poles this morning which had appeared on the football field (they weren't there on Monday!) and wondered if they might be what you need to replace the one that was vandalised. They are in the back of my car if they are of any good.

If any of you are in Holmfirth tomorrow (Sunday 17th) you can help support NEXT YEARS festival by dropping in to the Farmers Market and buying yourself a bacon butty from the "Feed the (Festival of) Folk" stall. All profits raised go towards the Festival and last year raised well over £1000

We can be found in the downstairs section of the market on the 3rd Sunday of each month (and also sell mugs of tea & coffee)
