You could always try going to some the nearer folk festivals, where there will usually be a session or two going on. Time Out used to have lists of London sessions. There is also a London Folk Club Guide, that has sessions listed as well. I will see if I can find the URL, for you. I did spend one night in the Swan, a year or so back, it was an interesting night. It was billed as a session with Gino Lupari (he of Four Men And A Dog) and friends, but is wasn't a session, it was a gig (You have to watch out for that one, it's always a good idea to check). They played very well. Despite the fact that Gino had one eye on the TV, where Manchester Utd were playing Juventus in the European Champions Cup. There were, in the pub a party of Italians, supporting their team and I suspect there were attracted in, expecting to hear some of their own music from someone with such an Italian sounding name. I think they were surprised on two counts as they could have reasonably expect him to be rooting for Juventus, when in fact he is as Irish as 'The Black Stuff' and a Manchester Utd supporter and cheered very loudly when they scored, which they did, three times. .....It was an odd night. Can you tell us more about the Grove? |

Thanks for the URL I checked it out and will probably get the magazine. The Grove is a pub in Balham near Clapham South tube.They have a singers night every Friday and regular acts. I went to see Waterson Carthy there this Friday gone. After 2 pints of special I got up and sang which I find nerve wracking but a real buzz. I am told that I put off several members of the audience in the second half because I was singing along a bit too loudly with Waterson Carthy!! I think the Grove is very good. The people that run it are very friendly and helpful.I am going to my folk class again this week, but the reason I wanted to meet other musicians as well is because I think it is hard to join in sessions unless you know a lot of tunes and I only know about ten!! By the way, where are you living now? |

By the way, when I went to the Swan last week they were all watching football, I didn't really understand who was playing or what was going on. The class was held in a little side bar and run by this wonderful Irish man called Brendan. It starts off as a class for kids, I know because I got the time wrong and sat with them for the whole class feeling like a bit of an eejit I can tell you. I play the flute and the tinwhistle and there were lots of flute players, fiddlers and accordionists(?) in the class. Bye now |

15 Jun 99 - 04:19 AM (#86784) Subject: RE: jamming From: reggie miles Shambles, interesting site you posted (Folk London) I have never been outside the states yet but I can see that I would suffer from culture shock even in the UK where my assumption was that I would be at least be able to understand the language. I mean the telephone numbers alone were a bit confusing to me, only being used to how we communicate here in the USA by phone. After looking at a map that someone posted in a thread about a festival there I think I could easily get lost as well, as things like road markings were also a challenge to understand. I guess I'll have to do quite a bit more study before I take on the idea of a visit overseas. The getting there will be easy compared to getting about once I'm there. |
