A nice chap called Gordon has given us an LP By The Broadside Folk Group "A collection of Catchpennies" The Group members are listed as:- John Conolly,Bill Meek,Pete Mundey,Brian Dawson and Tom Smith. Track list Gloucestershire Wassail;Song of Wandering Angus;Seasons Round;Jigs and Reels;Lumpers Song;Rocks of Bawn;Lish Young Buy a Broom;The Dogger Bank;Fiddlers Green;Three Score and Ten;Rigs of The Time;Sailors Song;Curragh of Kildare;The Broadside Man and Lark in the Morning. Just listened through this Album (having rushed out and purchased an actual Turntable!)and it is bloody great! I know Mr Conolly is still out there working the pubs and clubs and Have had the pleasure of meeting Mr Dawson. So to them and the other members of this Group,Thank you for the great music and it still sounds fresh and full of life today. The date on the cover says May 12 1970 and the labeling seems to be done by hand. Its realy a very lovely thing to have. Maybe someone who knows these chaps could pass this on to them please. The rumour was that The Broadside "nicked" Brian Dawson from a band my Dad was in.......when I asked J.C. (No not that one, John Conolly) about this a few months ago, he didn't deny it! Cheers Paul |

Bill doesn't get out singing much these days. I used to give a lift to Tom Smith when Market Rasen Folk Club was at Walesby and he did attend Faldingworth Live in the early days, but he was having great difficulties enjoying the music through being partially deaf and stopped coming along. I still see Tom from time to time in Market Rasen However, Tom Smith & Brian Dawson can be seen regularly at the Reely Grim Folk Dance Club at the Blacksmiths Arms in Rothwell, near Caistor. http://beehive.thisisgrimsby.co.uk/default.asp?WCI=SiteHome&ID=9525&PageID=52931 I took a photo of Tom & Brian on the 21st Feb 2006 (blimey was it that long ago). I had the distinct pleasure of seeing these guys play every week at the Grimsby Folk Song Club from around 1968..... I got the album back then and almost wore it out! Pete Mundey moved to Germany in the early 70's and passed away a few years later. Mike Lee, who had sung with the "Graingers" joined the band as a replacement and he passed away later that decade. Tom Smith and Brian Dawson passed on, by osmosis, their many tunes and traditional songs and Bill and John were and are my songwriting heroes. They were amazing 'live' and Bills introductions to the songs and unsuspecting floor singers was legendary....He once introduced me as Grimsby's answer to the Post Office Tower (I'm 6'4"....or at least I was back then). I feel I had a wonderful apprenticeship with these guys and will always be grateful for their kindness towards this spotty guitar player who thought he could play "Anji". |

My name's Ruth and for many many years I've been trying to locate an LP record I had in the 70's. I bought it at The Turk's Head Pub, Lincoln on Folk Night. I'm sure the visiting group was called "Broadside" their music was all fabulous sea shanties.....a lot of them about Grimsby. (Here's to the Grimsby lads out on the trawling........etc) I vaguely remember the record being called something like "Hangman" or Scaffold" Unfortunately I lent my record to a 'friend' but despite numerous requests never received it back again. Could you tell me if this is the same "Broadside" and whether it's possible to obtain copies of their early music please ? (Preferably in CD form !) I'm 68 now and still think of them every time I pass the Turks Head.....alas....not a pub any more but bought by Robert Dorrian (Lincoln Football Club) who has turned it into flats. I had the great privilege of knowing and occasionally playing with the Broadside, and I later worked with John Conolly as a duo and as part of a four piece band. The album you refer to, I think, is called "Songs from the Stocks"...you might find a copy on line....or contact some of the Grimsby folks and see if someone can run you off a copy on a disk....Dave Evardson does have some of my collection of old recordings that I left with him....just can't remember if that album is among them. The album is a great collection of material....and I am not surprised you enjoyed them '"live"...a great bunch of guys playing great music. Good luck in your search...
