Lyr Req: dig deep/puppy in the bottom of the pot

The story is a guy who gets invited to supper by a tribe. All they have to eat is a dog..which looks suspiciously like the guy's dog (spot) Chief tells him to dig deep--there's a puppy in the bottom of the pot.

'dig deep, dig deep
dig deep, dig deep
There's a puppy in the bottom of the pot'

Does anyone know the words?

Thanks,
M

Jeez, if I ever heard that song, I'm sure my frontal lobe slammed down and blocked the memory.

Good luck anyway, Melissa.

Thanks..it's really not quite as gruesome as it seems--aside from the subject matter, of course.
tastefully done, you might say.

I got the notion it was done by someone who is discussed here off and on..so this seems like a good place to look for help.

Sorry for shuddering your frontal lobe, Cluin!

Apparently the song comes from an old story.
I'm not clicky-competent..but here's one that mentions the story:

Yes, Melissa, I've heard a song with the line "If you put your dog in a microwave, it makes a tasty snack." Very tasteful.

I'm surprised nobody has at least given partial lyrics having seen some of the obscurities that surface here. I thought someone would at least be able to tell me whose song it was or proper title so I could have more luck finding it elsewhere.

I think the guy who sang it said it was a little-known Driftwood song. It would be nice to at least verify/refute that much..

Thanks

It reminds me of an urban legend that I read, probably in one of Jan Harold Brunvand's books (I've read nearly all of them).

A tourist couple goes to a Chinese restaurant and brings their little dog with them. When the waiter comes, they tell him their dog is hungry, too, and ask for some scraps to feed him. The waiter speaks very little English, and seems confused, so they attempt to convey their meaning by pointing to their dog and making eating motions. The waiter nods, smiles, and takes the dog into the kitchen.... You can guess the rest.

Melissa-

You may have to compose your own ditty and share it with us.

The Catlin story reminds me of a recent survey I took of the shelves at our local gourmet supermarket where you see row upon row of pickled pigs feet, Rocky Mountain oysters, ox tail soup, but not a single can of puppy dog tails. When I complained to the management, they acknowledged that one of their assistants had placed such an order but it had been curtailed by his superior.

Charley Ignoble

It's surprising that more stores don't carry cans of puppy dog tail--an essential ingredient when making little boys (along with snips and snails)

I'll keep looking for the words of the song I heard (seems like one song on the topic might be enough?) but you've tempted me into considering writing one about cans of dogtail, Charley.

There used to be a restaurant in Wood Street in Cardiff (Opposite Cardiff General station) with a sign on the door "Pekingese cooking"

One last pop..then I'll let my request slide off the page.

Gurney: Wouldn't little boys leave iridescent tracks if they were made of snails AND slugs? The book I had said 'snips' and I always wondered what kind of snips..

Was the sign intended as a warning, Nigel?

Could it be that the Railroad Restaurant was the final resting place of "Swansee Jack?"

Melissa-

I do need another canine song to round out my set with "Dead Dog Scrumpy," where I've added this chorus:

Here's to dead dog cider,
The best there is by far;
Here's to dead dog cider,
No moaning at the bar;
You can search this wide world over,
Find many a beer or ale,
But when you've tried dead dog cider
Your search will be curtailed!

And thanks are owed to nautical novelist Patrick O'Brian for the "curtail" pun.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Melissa: If you have the lyrics, please post them here. Also any other information you have about the song, i.e. title, songwriter, date, who recorded it, what album, where you found the lyrics, etc.

So far, what I have is a tape of a guy singing it..haven't transcribed yet and I was so excited about getting a copy, I didn't think to whose song it is.

I doubt I'll be able to post album/date info--but can do words and possibly singer.

Thanks for popping this back up.
There didn't seem to be much interest in it and had nearly decided to not bother.

Isn't there a hunting song with something like this as chorus line?

To answer my own question - No! What I was thinking of was:

"Then drink, puppy, drink and let every puppy drink
That's old enough to lap and to swallow
For he'll grow into a hound, so we'll pass the bottle round
And merrily we'll whoop and we'll holloa."

BMI.com lists 152 songs by Jimmy Driftwood, but none of them is called PUPPY IN THE BOTTOM OF THE POT. In fact, I couldn't find even one of his songs that had any of the words PUPPY, BOTTOM, or POT in the title.

This Jimmy Driftwood discography doesn't have it either. Neither does Allmusic.com.

If you Google for "puppy in the bottom of the pot" the only thing you find is this thread.

I can't find it either..but that's what the guy said both when I heard him sing it and on the copy of an old tape of him singing.

On the tape, he introduces the song with a bit about Driftwood and his wife living on a reservation for a while..

I've been looking for a set of words online to compare with the tape. Some of the phrases don't scan well and I think there may be a couple missing words.
It's hard to find and I hesitate to put iffy words here before I can find some verification of some sort.

I'd be glad to pm the ones I have to you, Jim Dixon, if you'd like?
I just want to make sure they're accurate before posting them here.

Every year my grandfather would make turkey hash. When it was time to eat he’d tell us all. “Dig deep, get puppy”. No one knows where he got it. This was in 60s and 70s.

Boiled puppy is a dish served to honored guests by the Lakota and other Plains tribes, and having been so honored several times, I can say that it is quite tasty.

Best,
