One of Belgium's great songwriters and singers, Wannes Van De Velde, has died of leukaemia yesterday, aged 71. Born in Antwerp in 1939, he became interested in traditional songs in the early 1960's and made his first record in 1966. As well as traditional songs, he wrote songs himself using Antwerpen dialect, which was not considered the thing at all by speakers of 'proper' Dutch/Flemish. His earliest writing was prompted by the destruction of some of the historical houses and old building of his native city.

He was a lovely man and wrote and sang some incredibly good songs. He's a real loss to music and humanity.

Sad news. I'd no idea he was so ill. Rest in peace, Wannes, and join the illustrious song circle up above (or maybe down below ...).

There is a youtube video in memory of him HERE. I don't read Dutch, but I assume the singer must be him? Great voice. Here's one of him singing in French in 2006: click.

Sad to know he will not be here any more. RIP

Last time I met him was at Derroll Adams' 65th Birthday bash back in the 90's.. Such a nice gentle man.. very much like Derroll in a way. A great loss to us all. Belgium should be in mourning. R.I.P. Wannes.
As Aye,
Phil.

Here's another tribute clip on YouTube, with Wannes Van De Velde singing Dylan's Hard Rain

Incidentally, a correction - "Born in Antwerp in 1939". If he'd been born in 1939 he wouldn't have been 71 for a couple of years. He was born in 1937, 29th April.
