BS: Did Anybody Used to Drink Aqua Libra?

Subject: BS: Did Anybody Used to Drink Aqua Libra?
From: GUEST,Jim Martin

I found this on the internet as I had been puzzled as to what had happened to one of my favourite drinks for 10 years since I was convalescing from chicken pox:

http://www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk/index.php/chatroom/topic/2894

Apparently all was well until Britvic took over the label!

I think an all out effort is needed to pressurise them into manufacturing this very healthy drink again.

Any takers?

Aqua Libra was a very healthy and refreshing fruit & herb drink with all natural ingredients, sweetened only with apple juice, it had the ability to restore the alkalinity balance in the digestive system when suffering from over-acidity.

"All natural ingredients" is meaningless.
What ingredients? Any supporting studies?

It didn't contain any artificial ingredients or chemicals (no 'E' numbers), isn't that good enough for you, 'Q'? How many drinks do you know of that have the ability to restore the acid/alkaline balance in the digestive system?

Coca cola also contains all natural ingradients, as I noticed recently on a label.

E-numbers are an EU invention. Over 900! assigned. Obviously the work of a committee of some sort.

The E-number list makes it clear that many products assigned an E-number are safe.

Additives with an E-number and classed as safe include riboflaven (vitamin B2), agar, guar, chlorophyll, curcumin (tumeric), most carotenes, calcium carbonate, gold, anti-oxidants including vitamins C and E, etc., etc. Many are natural in vegetables, many are often recommended by physicians.

Many are listed as causing stomach upset, including citric acid (in all citrus fruits); others are "suspicious." Some cause allergies in certain people. The list requires common sense and, in many cases, specialized knowledge to interpret.
Health food faddists will find some of their favorites listed.

Some are controlled in their use, but this is not stated.

List here: http://www.curezone.com/foods/enumbers.asp

Fantastic stuff - tasted brilliant. Very sceptical about the health-giving claims but it did used to make me feel better psychologically if nothing else when hungover. I also used to be a fan of Purdys till they started putting glucose in it to turn it into a generic, sugary so-called "energy drink"...

No idea why the manufacturer tried to sell'em both as snake oil, though. They were fine in their own right as tasty, refreshing drinks and didn't need to come over all medieval on our asses...

Hey, I don't know that I'm sure I believe all the fancy claims these health drinks make...!

I saw a young woman the other day, she was stumbling along 'sports' drink in hand. And I thought, "hmmm, those scientific isotropicglucosefructosemagicmethinnerandfitterisolates must have something a bit itchybeard about them."

On the upside, apart from the random stumbling, general ranting, low level aggression, and utterly socially unacceptable earings, she seemed pretty happy though!

There's a b****y conspiracy going on to force us to buy unhealthy, sugary drinks! First it was Aqua Libra - now they've wiped Ame drinks (which I was buying since the demise of the former) off the local supermarket shelves:

dhttp://www.britvic.com/Brand.aspx?id=45

It's that Britvic crowd again!

But they (Britvic) are doing this:

I sent this Email to Britvic with a copy to Tesco:

"Dear Sir,

Since your company took over the "Aqua Libra" & "Ame" brand drinks, I have been unable to find them on my local Tesco, Dunnes & Centra stores' shelves. Subsequently, I have been unable to find any other sugar/sweetener-free fizzy, fruit drinks at all!

I find this situation most unsatisfactory in a time when we are being encouraged to buy healthy food and drinks!

I would be very grateful to receive your comments.

Yours sincerely
Jim Martin"

Aqua Libra was developed and owned by IDV (International Distillers & Vintners,)in the late 1980's. It had a DBA ("doing business as ___" )with a Swiss Company name, which was no more than a PO Box in Geneva. It's flavor profile consisted mainly of melon and tarragon extracts. It was difficult for IDV to market it because that company's expertise, sales and distribution connections and network were in the beverage alcohol sector - not in the non-alcoholic sector. I suspect that when IDV was absorbed by Grand Metropolitan which then became Diageo, the Return on Capital Employed did not merit retaining Aqua Libra in their product profile, and they sold it.

If someone thinks a drink does them good, it usually does. The feel good factor keeps all sorts of niggle ailments at bay. Drinking lots of fluids that are almost all water is good too, notwithstanding what the rest is made from..

But all the tosh and bollocks about restoring alkalinity in the body etc? The only way they are allowed to make stupid claims is that the claim is benign. If the drink has a slightly high alkalinity content, gastric juices (fairly acidic) drop them through pH7 anyway, releasing their trace salt and nothing more.

If something claims scientific sounding benefits, it is either controlled through pharmaceutical licence or is below therapeutic effect. (Mind over matter)

I have no issue with benign beverage claiming benefits as part of a healthy lifestyle but there is a line to draw, as the cosmetic industry knows when pole vaulting over it.

I had a flatmate in the 1950s who worked for Britvic. Used to bring Aqua Libra home. I recall it as a perfectly potable concoction, but have no recollection of any particular effects, either benign or deleterious, following actually drinking the stuff.

All these elderflower concoctions that are the rage now taste much the same as my distant memory big Aqua Libra to me: quite nice but also expensive.
For a cheaper alternative for your "acid/alkaline balance" (confirmed by endoscopy??) try soda water, free in some pubs! True Aqua Libra.

I had flatulence in a crowded lift once. Still chuckle about us falling out gasping and Laughing with tears in our eyes whilst a bloke in a kilt and an American accent walked out slowly and went over to reception and asked that we (three mates up for a conference) be thrown out of the hotel.

Only in The Balmoral in Edinburgh is an American in a kilt able to claim the higher moral ground. Still, it has that rare combination of noisy and smelly. Rather proud really.

Soda water free in some pubs? Well, yes, it has happened but when I swap to it following my initial pint of something nice I've paid everything from 'can't charge you for that, sir, it doesn't cost us anything' to the same as a decent pint, so around £3.30. The pub average seems to be £1.50. Still got a driving licence, though.

Yea i Drank the stuff all the time (when i could afford it that was) Had a great refreshing taste!
I contacted Britvic a few years ago to ask if they were going to start to produce it again,
(Along with Russian the pink mixer with angostura bitters in it!) that was also very nice!
Got a reply back saying that they were not contemplating bringing it back any time soon!
I guess there is more money in those sugar rich caffeine saturated energy drinks!!
(look at me i look so healthy running along drinking this! i even have my music up so loud so as not to hear my Kidneys shouting out "your Killing Me")
Sign of the times, stop making a wonderful healthy refreshing drink for an over priced can of poison
