BS: News Anchor on RTE

In the 70's there was a very attractive woman who read the nightly news on RTE. I was very much enamoured by her as a kid and wondered if anyone could remember her name.

What is RTE? I remember RFE (Radio Free Europe--a division of VOA, the Voice of America).

Not an anchor and I don't see a picture of her, but maybe Marian Finucane?.

Chas. it stand for Radio Telefís Éireann which is like PBS over here, if I understand it rightly.

RTÉ is the state owned broadcasting service. I don't remember female news readers back in the 70s. Anne Doyle, Eileen Dunne and Emer O Kelly have been around a while, but I don't thonk that long. Bibi Baskin was a fine looking woman in her day but not that far back I think. Don't recall her reading the news.

No it wasn't any of those, but thanks for the thoughts guys. This woman was really attractive, strikingly so, beautiful even, or so it seemed to me in the day.

Den,

Are you sure she was on RTE? They definitely had female news readers on UK TV in the 70s. Earliest ones I can remember were Angela Rippon, Anna Ford, Jan Leeming and Moira Stewart.

Did Gloria Huinniford ever read news?

Last try would be Olivia O leary, although she's not from Dublin. She was a news reporter and later presented current affairs program Today Tonight.

Gloria never read the news on RTE, although she may have done so on Ulster TV.

Wikipedia has a list of former RTE newsreaders. Is she in there by any chance?

McGrath,,

Thanks for the link.

The only two names on that list who haven't been mentiomed (excluding people who are recent additions to the news staff) are Mary Kennedy, who didn't start reading the news untile the 1980s and Geraldine McInerny. I can't definitely put a face on Geraldine, but I have no memory of ther being around in the 1970s and I think she is of much more recent vintage.

Are we sure she was a news reader?

RTE have had some very attractive program presenters over the years. Other names that spring to mind are Áine O Connor, Doireann Ni Bhriain and Thelma Mansfield. I watched a lot of TV back in the '70s and by default most of this was on RTE. I'm intrigued to know which presenter we're talking about here.

Yes absolutely a newsreader. Great link McGrath but sadly to no avail. I must go back and reread A Great Feast of Light by John Doyle, because I think he mentions her.
