Sarah Palin in Coronation Street

I cannot be the only person to have realised that Sarah Palin has taken the role of Ken Barlow's wife in Coronation Street.

It will not be for the best but at least she is earning an honest crust and ceasing to threaten world peace.

I thank you

I do not understand all the hatred for and venom spewed on Sarah Palin. And this typically comes from people who think themselves enlightened and open minded; caring, sensitive people.

It reminds me of the high school cheerleaders who thought it was OK to tear up some freshman girls because they had yet to develop - or make fun of the skinny, pimple faced boys because they were "geeks."

Why is it OK to treat people with disdain, derision and ridicule simply because we don't like their politics? Why don't we have the balls and the decency to argue the merits of our differences rather then shit on the character?

Jed, my only beef with her is her incredible arrogance to think she is qualified to be president. In my opinion she is a clueless ignoramus who has no idea how many women she turned off with that silly winking routine.
I do admire her zest for life and her love of her state. I don't hate republicans, in fact two of my best friends are bent that way. One of them was an only child who admits that he doesn't want to share anything with anyone, and the other is a former Sheriff from Florida who voted against the 4 cent tax on beer to help pay for uninsured children's medical bills.
Those are not isolated cases. In my experience, selfishness and greed seem to be common among republicans. I don't know you well enough to say, but I doubt you are that way.

Damn, Kendall, I thought the winking was sexy....oh, maybe that was the Tina Fey Palin who was so sexy.

The thing that bothered me about Palin and McCain was that before the Republican Convention, they seemed like reasonable moderates. After the convention, they started spewing hard-line conservative ideology and condemning progressive thinking as treason. I think they sold out to the Reagan conservatives in a desperate attempt to get elected, and it didn't work. Sarah Palin was at her best in her acceptance speech at the convention. John McCain was at his best in his concession speech on election night. Too bad they weren't that way during the campaign.

Hey, if being a fox is the only qualification fir being president then why not just vote on Miss November verses Miss July???

No, what really riles me up is that there are people out there who think, "Awwww, what the heck... She's purdy so I'll vote fir here" and then there a re other folks out there who think, "Geeeze, I purdy... I'd make a great president..."

This isn't venom that is be aimed at Sarah Palin specifically but to everyone in one of the two above categories...

But worse than any of that is the sorry state of our educational system that is creating people with so little understanding of what Tom Jefferson meant about democracy needing an "informed electorate"...

After seeing how people with advanced degrees from Ivy League Universities perform in the office of president, it's hard to make the argument that she's any less qualified than Barack Obama is.

Oh really, Rigs???

Maybe we could take this a step further and introduce a Consititional ammendment requiring that no college grads be eligible to run for president???

Awwww, heck... While we are at it, why not exempt high school grads as well???

Well, Boberdz... If yer gonna go that far, why not just exempt anyone who has ever been to school from being president???

Yeah, that oughtta fix everything...

I mean, let's get real here, Rigs... Intellegence bashing is on it's way out... We've had enough stupid people callin' the shots and look where it got US... What, do you want even stupider people in charge???

I, for one, am glad to see intellegence and education trump stupidity...

But what the heck do I know??? I might type lousy and I may be too lexdexic to find my typos, but I gotta a couple of college degrees and, hey, I think that educated folks can do a better job of runnin' the country than the uneducated...

You're really very relieved that Obama won, and you probably hope as well that he has the smarts to figure out a way to dig us out of the mess we're in. He's the one who's gonna have sleepless nights.

It's alright if you say that as well on this forum.

Palin's performance as a vice-presidential candidate was pathetic. Sorry that you can't acknowledge that. You're a fine songwriter.

Truth is, Jed, she's a lovely lady to know, I suspect, to sit around the fireplace with, or go on a hike with. In that context she'd probably be fine company. None of which qualifies her for the office to which she pretended. And that over-reaching hubris is what offends people, not anything about her personally.

I tend to think that families where they fire stun guns(on the low setting) at each other and take each other to court are great on The Jerry Springer Show.

However, do you really want Steve Wilkos and the security staff dragging people off The President in the Oval Office?

Great, glad to hear it, but what does intelligence have to do with having a degree bestowed upon you from an Ivy League institution? Georgie had a couple of those.

Frankly, with the exception of Paul Volcker, I think Obama has done an excellent job of picking cabinet members and advisors. But why is it necessary to continue to bash Sarah Palin?

Jed

My complaint with Palin has nothing to do with her politics. I'm not even sure what they are, except that she's loved by social conservatives. But her behavior during the campaign was disgraceful - wildly irresponsible remarks about Obama "paling around with terrorists", the same old divisive politics in which some parts of the country are more American than others. It's quite possible that this was the role assigned to her by the McCain campaign, but she carried it out with gusto. People are responsible for their actions, and hers deserved to be criticized.

Jed,

Sarah Palin as a candidate was, I believe, an attempt to sway as many Hillary Clinton voters as possible to the Republican ticket. McCain has simply too many strikes against him for voters to assume that Palin would have always stayed in the background. His age and bouts of skin cancer told a different story. After the hard knocks that Hillary has taken, the hard work that she has done, the nonsense she has put up with, the law degree that she earned, to suggest that a journalism B.A. lightweight like Palin could lure voters who crave a highly qualified woman candidate for the race, and to fill the office, she was an insult.

No more, no less. Until the Republicans get over courting one particularly conservative part of their party that feels the need to dictate everyone else's religion and how they conduct their personal lives, candidates like her not going to make the majority of the party happy. I met a lot of Republicans this year who were so turned off by her that they did vote for Obama. So it wasn't just the Hillary voters who were insulted.

Sarah Palin is fine as a big fish in her politically small pond of Alaska. She can be funny and charismatic and a good sport. But despite all of the coverage on Saturday Night Live, she is in no way, shape, or form ready for prime time.

I hope you're well and had a good Thanksgiving. And keep posting your concert dates.

However, I can't see why he would raise a word in defence of this lady.
(I once worked as an extra on 'Crossroads - I was 'man in bar'. Actors who work in soaps are really clever. They re-write scenes before your eyes, and five minutes later these actors have committed the script to memory and they are performing word perfect.)
Sarah Palin couldn't be that bright as long as she's got a hole in her ass.

But Jed's all right. More than all right. A fine human being and folksinger.

Jed is OK and welcome at my house any time. He is also a talented and generous musician. That said, we disagree on politics.

In my opinion, Sarah Palin was a huge mistake and cost McCain the elction. She simply is not ready to be president and did not appear capable of growing into the role quickly were it expected of her. McCain is old and has health problems.

My fear was that bush and his cronies would be called upon to run the country (further into the ground).

There is no personal malice in my criticism of Palin. She is not stupid - you don't get to be governor being stupid. Her beliefs conflict with mine but so do some of Obama's. If she uses the next 4-8 years wisely, Palin's time will come.

ALL POLITICAL CANDIDATES ARE FODDER FOR LATE NIGHT TV. She can not claim an exemption from the ridicule just because she is a woman. My advice to her is cut your hair, lose the wink, and act presidential, while brushing up on national events and politics.

Coronation Street is the gold standard by which UK soap serials are based.

It started in 1960 or thereabouts and up to that point - soap operas had been about glamorous folks working in nice places. the dialogue was pastiche Rattigan and Noel Coward - dead posh, with a few silly working class types (cleaner women and people in lowly positions) for light relief.

Coronation Street was based on life in a street in a tough Northern town - at one point it was supposed to be Salford near Manchester. It was a real breath of fresh air - the accents were authentic, the dialogue a pastiche of Alan Sillitoe, Shelagh Delaney and Keith Waterhouse, the characters intelligent and believable.

Inevitably it turned into a parody of itself. However it still has adherents amongst the more intelligent members of the community. The mighty Alan bennet (a truly wonderful writer) is said to be a fan.

I stopped watching in 1964.

Jed is a first rate musician, one of the finest songwriters I know, one of the finest people I know, and one of my very closest musician friends. I happen to think his politics are out of whack, but only in a couple of areas. But I will tell you this. If you decide you are going to debate Jed, you had better have your facts straight, and be ready with something other than cutesy little cliche'd arguments. I may not agree with some of his positions, but I dearly love the conversations we have. They are thought provoking, and full of give and take, and I come out better informed than when I started. I would rather spend time in spirited discussion with him, than in conversation with other liberals who can't think outside of their biases. All that, and singing and playing with this fine friend to boot. Don't get no better'n that, Pa.

Jed, Sarah Palin got attacked in a far less ferocious manner than the attack she put on Obama. The attacks on her were based on her own comments and track record. Her attacks on Obama, actual and implied, appealled to the lowest common denominator. She, and McCain (a man I actually used to admire), as well as their surrogatesd, did everything they could to imply that this fine, Christian, family man was a terrorist, a Moslem (as if there was something wrong with that), and ill qualified. Her speeches were the places where folks would call out "terrorist" and "kill him".

Having said that, I believe we will see more of her. She is no dummy. She will do an assessment of herself, and do what she must to get back on the stage.

Mick, what makes you believe "she's no dummy"?
And yes, Jed is a really nice guy & a really goosd songwriter, singer & musician but who's debating him?

5 schools & how many years to get a BA in journalism, please, she's not the brightest bulb on the closet ceiling, close the door on her, she's dimming fast & fading, let her go.

No, she's not someone who you'd have a beer with & she didn't get to be governor by using her intelligence. She's manipulative as a mother-fucker & quite the back stabber, a cut-throat not to mention a cheat, a liar, a vicious slanderer, rabble rouser & a complete crowd pleaser (when it's her crowd & not yours). She'll zero in at a moments notice when she see an opening in which she can take advantage of, she's a bird of prey. Have a drink with her & she'll have your wallet, coat & underwear in her purse, that once was belonged to your brother-in-law & you'll be waking up next week owing the bar bill, the hospital bill, the oil bill & back taxes, oh & that the job she had you appointed to last year, it was just unfunded while you were in a comma for the past week. She shouldn't have been a streetwalker not a mayor. Sorry, as vicious as she is, she has no place in public service, she is not & has not serviced the public she has only screwed the public to service herself. If you don't think she's vicious marry her sister or vote her into office once more & she if she'll build a hockey rink on someone else's property for your kids & she if she doesn't cost her followers & public the high price to straighten it out & ask you to suck it up afterwards. She's quick to turn her back on you & lie to your face in the next minute, we said "No thanks to your bridge to nowhere" & then pocketed the money anyway, trying to not only shift the blame but at the same time trying to take the credit too, that's not brains at work (intelligence would've have done it in a way that she could've gotten away with it) but brass balls, arrogance, utter disrespect for the people that she reresented & vile manipulation.

Sorry to hear she's put the jinks & nixon (he,he) the Coronation Street program but we'll be glad to have you keep her, don't send her back, for any reason, please.

I chose my words carefully.

1. Sarah Palin looks like Deirdre Barlow. Mr Sage, you amy not watch Corie but people from the UK post on here and they may spot the joke.

2. She is ignorant. I am not going to list the gaffs that show this - perhaps somebody else would enjoy doing that.

3. She is stupid. She doesn't seem to realise that being ognorant of all sorts of things actually matters.

4. If she cannot stand up to the press / media what chance does she have against the evil and manipulative villians that run many countries across the globe.

5. What is most worrying is the so many people voted for her.

6. Luckily (?) by a slim majority the best ticket one.

I think what she is most ignorant about, are the political nuances required to pull of a good interview with politically driven news people. I suspect she'll be brushing up on those skills.

I think I read where she is in Georgia today campaigning for Saxby Chambliss, so apparently there are factions in the Republican Party who have not given up on her.

However, that having been observed, I do not support her views on most political issues.

I've not watched the show since Ena Sharples time. She used to frighten me when I was a child, and I always felt sorry for poor Minnie Caldwell, who seemed to be bullied by Ena.

Women in hairnets are damned scary! :0)

Modern days soaps frighten me even more than Ena Sharples used to because they're now so filled with violence and hatred. I don't understand what they're trying to do to the younger generation, apart from depress them all terribly and make them feel that this is a very bad world..

Doug, proof that you see only that which serves your narrow purpose lies in the first two sentences of your diatribe above. I believe I am a liberal, and that I indicated great respect for my friend and fellow Beef Brother, as well as respect for his opinions.

As to those that choose to label this woman as "stupid" or a "dummy", be reminded that arrogance of that kind is what gave us Dubya. It is the same arrogance on behalf of management types that I took advantage of in union organizing drives, yet I was guilty of it as well. As you may recall, I was running the Gore campaign in Michigan during the Republican Primaries of 2000. I remember sitting with a young staffer of mine and making the comment that I sure hoped that GWB got the nomination. The staffer asked me why. I told him something like, "..because we will whip him like a rented mule. He is nothing more than a Daddy's boy in a suit, and not very bright". He may, on reflection, be the worst President in US history, but he beat us twice. Before you start all the "he stole the election" stuff, just remember that if we had won any of the small States, including Gore's own Tennessee, then Florida wouldn't have mattered.

Never underestimate someone's intelligence. It takes smarts to take advantage of the unavoidable enough to win an election. With the unknowable events which will shape the next four years, Palin will be smart enough to school herself in her weaknesses, and the conservatives will surround her with Cheney like folks that will polish up the warts, or hide them from view.

Our young President-elect is making all the right moves, assembling a world class team, and has the vision and smarts to maneuver in a very unstable world. But smarter people have been tripped up by unknowable and unforeseen actions in countries where we have little or no input or decent intelligence sources. He will require all of his skills, and all of our embracing of his agenda in a very real and activist way, to be successful. The Palins of our nation are certainly out there waiting to take advantage of any slip up. The worst thing you could do would be not be aware of that.

I am amazded and full of astounement at the turn this thread took! Why on earth have normaly sensible people who have not, apparantly, understood Les's joke assumed this is an attack on someone who means even less to the world in general than Coronation Street characters?

If I was to say, for instance, that I thought Obama looked like a man in an advert for pottypoop nappies, would his supporters assume that I had somehow insulted him? As it happens I reckon George W was in some old PG tips ads but that is BTW...

Wake up guys. If you don't see or understand the joke that's fine. Leave it to the people who do. I thought it was supposed to be us Brits who took over threads!

As it happens, to be in Coronation Street is the ultimate accolade and whoever the American bint in question is she should be pleased to be classed as sharing the same stage with Sir Ian McKellan, Prince Charles, Status Quo, Michael Byrne and, starting in January I beleive, Stephanie Beecham amongst coutless other famous cameos.

I think Noddy Holder was my favourite. It was the episode before Chritmas and it finished with his famous gruff voice yelling "Merry Christmas everybody!".

Oh - and the fact that Ted whateverhisname was, one of Rita's blokes, keeled over on the bowling green behind our house:-)

Weelittledrummer: maybe you can tell me whether this is a myth or whether it was really true - Apparently the budget was so small on "Crossroads" in its early days, that one of the walk-ons had to walk past the window wearing different hats and either crouching down or on tip-toe to make himself look as though he was several different people passing by ? Is that true - and...was it you ??

It was the iceberg to Blair's Titanic - from that moment on - he was obviously a liar - holed below the waterline.

You would be naive not to realise that any other politician coming up with that line was obviously a scoundrel.

It isn't brains that wins 2 elections, it's scary how many dummies there are out there that voted him in & fell for him & his beer drinking friendly personality, almost, could've happened again. Are they still that stupid & are there still that many that they'd vote for him one more time just cause he smart????
Many a brassy idiot has held the high road, armed with no more that a good gun & from a good vantage point, doesn't mean that they had the brains to find themselves in the right place at the right time, against all odds.

Yes, Doug. Smart and corrupt. Re-election not the good of the country was on their minds as well as a little revenge for some and profit as well. I am not happy that the Clintons are involved in this administration and see big scandals in our future.

Wanna see denial? Drive through any mostly conservative area in the US and count the number of McCain/Palin political signs that are still being displayed on people's lawns. I guess they're going to leave them up until the Republican nominee for 2012 is announced.

Everything you've heard about Crossroads is true.

You had to provide your own costume. They said, Get a dark coloured suit. So I got a dark blue one - cos I didn't actually own a suit.

Doug Porter (Debyshire folksinger) held the record for playing 'man in bar'. he said it was worth getting the suit. So I did.

When I got there they said, you got a blue suit.....! the cameras don't like blue - didn't they tell you.

I said, no I bought it specially, and they said,.... oh well its only bloody Crossroads, if you bought it specially!

So I'm sitting there in the bar in my suit. Ronnie Allen is in the foreground doind the sub Rattigan bit
Dahling, would you mind awfully awfully if we gave it one more charnce....?
Oh David, dohlink ! I GAVE it a charnce, but with you - with you ...it was always the job - the motel, always and only, always and only! the job first and larrst!

I'm sat there in the background, next to this very nice lady who was a magicians assistant, she was telling me something or other.....

When this guy comes up to us with a clipboard and snarls WE CAN HEAR YOU TALKING IN THE CONTROL ROOM! You're only supposed to be acting talking! YOU! don't say a word! And don't for godsake drink those glasses of beer - they've been there months. It'll kill you. We have a bet on, on how long we can make a can of LongLife last... you nearly buggered it up!

So anyway. After a bit of Ronnie emoting. the guy with the clipboard comes up again. he says to Ronnie - change of plan Mr Allen - you're going to get back together with her! Heres the new speech.

So Ronnie goes off to learn the new speech - comes back ten minutes later and they shoot it in one. the camera crew applaud spontaneously.

Brilliant, we're all off home, I'm thinking. And the man with the clipboard comes back again. I say you guys, do you want to shoot another episode? - you get twice the money - and we all say - yes absolutely.

For the nest episode I was playing 'man walking through bar' A posh lady thespian grabbed me by the arm, and said briskly....'We'll walk through the bar like a man and wife out for evening together darling - you'll be marvellous!'

And so I was. I played 'man in bar' and 'man walking through bar'. Unfortuantely they were right about the blue suit - the camera didn't like it. When it was transmitted a few weeks later, I stood out and glowed like Sellafield kids in the porridge advert.

And when I walked across the bar - (glowing!) - I look a bit like a sputnik crossing Captain Kirk's vision, from the bridge of the USS Enterprise.

This was very unfortunate for the actor who was playing the new French Hotel Manager - Oh You Eeenglish how you deesgust me. Maintenant! I will be making you all eat frogs legs and smell my breath wheech is rich and vile with garleec an snails.... oh yes theengs 'ave been easy for you up to now! but ma fois! But ma fois! How you will suffere! Or my name is not Nasty-Foucquet!
Amy Turtle: Ooooh! I wain't loik thet Monsier Nasty Foucquet!
And then I sputnik-ed across the bar.

And then he went on national TV the next day and said they did, but not to believe him...he was quoting the reliable NYTimes!

Oh yes, I remember the details from those days. And I remember marching on winter streets with millions of others who did NOT believe the WMD bullshit we were being peddled.

And now we have been vindicated. And many of us remember exactly how, when, and where, and by whom, we were accused of being naive, unpatriotic terrorist sympathisers.

And, just to be clear, DougR did NOT accuse any of us of this. But he certainly believed the peddled BS.

Yes I did live through the 1960's. We had a Prime Minister in Harold Wilson who grasped what a rudderless ship America had become (political parties in hock to industrialists who needed the quick fix of a war economy) and accordingly Wilson kept us out of the mess that Vietnam was turning into.

Of course Wilsons was widely derided at the time by all the left wingers. The trouble with the left wing - they're a bit like the Vatican - you can never be quite Catholic enough. No one is pure enough in their beliefs and sctions for the real left wingers.

They would rather have a Thatcher or a Reagan in power than take over the reins of government themselves with the compromises that that entails.

All true drummer. So what should we do?

I think Wilson didn't make the mistake that Blair made because he had much more general political experience. What is most worrying is that Obama makes great speeches and has a depth of personal experience upon which to draw, but not a great depth of that general political experience.

He feels like Blair 2. I reveled n Blair 1. Will I be disappointed?

As a Brit observing the US election from outside, I can see why the Republicans might have wanted to select a woman VP candidate. However, it seemed that the specific choice of Palin took away one of their strongest arguments - that Obama lacks experience. So I'd be interested in a US view on the following: were/are there no other female republican politicians with credibility and experience? If Palin was the only one on the horizon, how has that happened? If there were/are other potential candidates, why didn't they get selected?

Interested to hear from both sides of the US political debate on this.

KP - Yes, there were a number of qualified Republcan women, but McCain needed (or at least thought he needed) to capture the vote of the right-wing-religious-wakkos, and Palin had the credentials to do that.
Also, it wasn't only the vote, but the ground forces and the network that could be energized through religious affiliations. His, and Hillary Clinton's biggest problem all along was the huge fund raising advantage that Obama had through internet connections. McCain was looking for something to counteract that as well.

Amos - I would agree that she was underinformed. I was very much surprised that the governor of a state--any state--wouldn't be more aware of world events. Doesn't this simply mean she is ignorant?

And, anyone who puts up for a serious office and is this ignorant is stupid.

The people of America and indeed the world, need someone much better informed with much better judgement.

At present it looks like they chose one.

Best of luck

The thing about Sarah Palin that I like the least:

In Alaska, when Mayor of Wasilla she queried the librarian if she would ban books. When the librarian said no, Sarah went after her job. Ultimately the librarian moved on. According to various souorces, you don't have to go far to get crosswise with Sarah, and when you do, she goes after your job. Those who take her side argue she's entitled to demand loyalty, but in my book a disagreement is not a lack of loyalty.

In national politics she waged a highly political campaign of mini-quotes and photo-moments, which played to the choir but as time wore on from the Republican convention, less and less to the congregation.

In a campaign season where the ineptitude of the current government combined with the utter cynicism of the republican presidential ticket and the unprecedented economic meltdown, there is only one reason why the vote was at all close.

The national campaign Sarah was a far cry from the Wasilla Sarah that we tolerated up to the national convention.

The thing about Sarah that I like the most:

I was due for surgery the day McCain announced her as his Veep choice. So it quite took my mind off my own troubles and made the day a cheerful one in retrospect.
