Wassail prog on Radio Gloucestershire

02 Dec 08 - 12:52 PM (#2506012)
Subject: Wassail prog on Radio Gloucestershire
From: Tradsinger

Richard Sermon, Carol Davies and I will be talking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire presenter Pete Wilson about the history of the wassailing custom, with particular emphasis on the Gloucestershire Wassail. The programme will feature sound clips of field recordings of traditional wassailers as well as more contemporary recordings. We will discuss the origins of the word wassail, early references, versions of the wassail song, geographical spread and orchard and house-to-house wassailing.

The programme will be broadcast on Sunday 21st December at 2 p.m. (UK time) and if you miss it, you can hear it on 'Listen Again' on the Radio Gloucestershire website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/gloucestershire/local_radio/).

Thank you for that link, Jim.

I love Loreena McKennitt's music. There are a few more tracks from that CD on here:

The programme sounds as if it should be a good 'un. Hope you enjoy it.

Just listened to the program and it is amazing. I have never heard such a well done academic based collection based programme. Simply amazing. however cant find any program notes. Names go by too quickly. Who is the "Richard" on the program. Additionally I would like to get the text of the rhyme.Charleton kings. Also the reference for the anglo saxon hail mary.....found two on line none referenced.

also looking for paintings by hartrick mentioned. I found his Wassail Bowl at Tresham any others.

It is in tempoary archive now so best go listen right away.

and yes.....I am distributing any possible profits from my forthcoming book in advance in the form of cd sales! just purchased the puzzlejug cd referenced above.....i have been acquainted with them through the efforts of Ms tudor of sunday folk so hope she gets credit!

amazing

What? Just over two years since it was broadcast? Is it still on the website? If so, where?

Can be downloaded using Radio Downloader.

Or it can be played on iPlayer and recorded using Audacity ('Stero Mix' input - enabled on XP, has to be enabled on Win 7).

For those overseas you can use ExpatShield.com to listen to iPlayer.

iPlayer works almost anywhere for audio. It is video that is censored and which ExpatShield.com allows you to view from overseas.

Picked this up from this thread and am really pleased I did.

Really enjoyable and informative.

One question for anyone out there - I have tried several times to use the BBC iplayer to download stuff for later listening but with no success at all.

An idiot's gude would be really useful.

Or maybe I'm too old!

cheers

OOPS ;ots of reallys in there.

is Gloucestershire (which seems it would have 4 syllables)
pronounced simply "Glouster"? I enjoyed listening to that
program and took notes and read some of the info on my show today...
also shared the link to Conrad's Wassail site
and John Adam's radio show on Phoenix f.m.

And for further clarification:

Gloucester - 2 syllables       [sounding like 'Gloster']
Gloucestershire - 3 syllables [sounding like 'Glostersher']
