Set Lists: If I show you mine, will you...

There have been some very interesting and lively threads recently on folk club types, the music that's performed in them, standards of performance, etc.

It occurred to me that it might be interesting to know what the performers among us would consider to be typical of their set list. In the first place it would throw a useful sidelight on their comments in these threads; in the second place, it would be good for me - as a comparative newbie - to see the range of music played and sung by a range of 'Catters.

So, I wondered whether you would like to imagine that you'd been called up and asked, "Would you like to play as a guest in my club?" What 10 songs/tunes would you consider most representative of your repertoire - a snapshot, if you like? On the principal that if I show you mine, you might show me yours, a prospective enquirer to me would get something like:

* The Cuckoo's Nest (traditional) instrumental played on guitar
* Three Jolly Rogues Of Lynn (traditional) vocal & guitar - OR Appalachian dulcimer instrumntal
* A Nice Quiet Day (Gus Elen) vocal & guitar
* Sitting On Top Of The World (Mississippi Sheiks) vocal & guitar
* She Ain't Rose (Leon Redbone) vocal & guitar
* Spanish Ladies/Leather Away The Wattle-O (traditional) mandolin OR tenor banjo instrumental
* George Green's College Hornpipe/The Marquis of Lorne (traditional) tenor banjo instrumental
* I'll See You In My Dreams (Isham Jones) guitar instrumental
* Deep River Blues (Delmore Brothers) vocal & guitar
* Doctor Jazz (Jelly Roll Morton) vocal & tenor ukulele

There! Now you can have a good laugh...

By, the way, this is not a sneaky plug for bookings - it's a genuine enquiry! (Though the promise of a pint of bitter and a pork pie will usually lure me out my Sussex stronghold).

Over to you...

A typical Boat Band set would have
a few cajun tunes and songs
eg
Jongle a Moi
Bosco Stomp
Waltz of the Bayou Teche

A few English tunes
eg
Keswick Bonny Lasses/Henry Stables Grand Hornpipe
Hughes' Waltz/Shrewsbury Waltz
Carlisle Reel/Haul Away the Hawser/Cartmel Races
Trip to the Lakes
A tune from somweher else
eg
Gypsy Princess (Irish)
An English song or two
eg
Yellow Handkerchief
A crowd pleaser
eg
Iko Iko

There's ten, pretty standard.

Let me take a stab at this. I'm an American sometime performer.

Good Old Boys Like Me - Don WIlliams

Good Morning Blues - Huddie Ledbetter

Little Green Buttons - Fred Koller

Death Ain't Got No Mercy - Trad.

Socks and a Gun - Peter and Katrina Cady (Mudcatters)

Stop Doin' So Well - Kristina Olsen

Kind Hearted Woman Blues - Robert Johnson

Don't Know Why I Love You Like I Do - Jesse Fuller

You Don't Even Care - Tim Wallace

Biscuit Blues - Bo Carter

This can change on a whim, but it's an idea of what I do. I'm living in Eastern Virginia if anybody is open to hiring.

Joe Offer has rightly suggested that this thread title would be better as "Set List: If I show you mine, will you..."

A similar old thread

I like your list.

I also Sing Cuckoo's Nest (a mixture of the versions in DT)
and Spanish Ladies.
I would sing 'nice quiet day' (assuming that is the old Cockney song) if I knew more than one verse. Would you post your version here?

I mostly sing songs of my own, but leaving them aside for now, here's another few songs that I often sing.

Seven Dear Old Ladies
British Workman's Grave
Thrashing Machine
Still I Love Him
Maggie May
Until We Meet Again
Ballad of Bethnal Green
While London Sleeps.

That's the one. Wonderful, thanks.

You might want to sing 'I works just like a Navvy' for some audiences though.

Yes - I've thought long an hard about that first line! If I do it in a sensible folk club - where the audience is really au fait and sympathetic - then I sing the original. However, it's usually safer to sing "I works just like the devil". "Navvy" is a good alternative too.

Preachin' Blues..........Son House
Train I Ride.............Arthur Crudup
Miss Maybelle............R.L. Burnside
30 Days..................Original
Paradise.................John Prine
Copperhead Road..........Steve Earel
Red Rooster..............Willie Dixon
Empire State Express.....Son House
King Bee.................Muddy Waters
Waymores Blues...........Waylon Jennings

This is just a sample set list... I have about 50 songs that I rotate in and out of set lists and another 20 or so for special events, like Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Please Keep My Grave Kept Clean" which I performed at the Getaway where more serious stuff is appreciated... Mostly, I play festivals as OMB (One Man Band, drums, geetar, etc), though, where people want it down and dirty...

I used to do coffee houses and had to really tone it down and play old Paul Seibel stuff as well as a lot og my own 60's and 70's stuff...

When I was 'doing' Folk Club gigs on a more regular basis I had a 'short' list of 500 or so songs , as well as Instrumental pieces on whistle and mandolin , and the Set list would vary , depending on the Club , the Audience , and my mood .
Material was English Trad , Irish , Scottish and American contemporary , Music Hall , Blues , Skiffle and even Country !

You're right Will, it is best to sing the original wherever possible. We shouldn't let those versions die.

Leadfingers: SHORTLIST of 500 songs, Sheesh, that's about my LONG list.
