Sandy Denny/Fotheringay 2 article

I found the story behind the salvaging of Fotheringay's second album, on which work originally stopped 38 years ago, so fascinating that I persuaded my employers, a newspaper published in the Gulf, to run a feature on it.

When Mudcatters, among others, took part in a little competition at my site inspired by the album, I promised to let them know when the article appeared. It has now - and I have reproduced it at
Salut! Live.

There is a footnote giving the link to the newspaper's website. I am currently travelling and have had difficulty getting into that site, but you can bypass the above link if you wish and go straight to
http://thenational.ae - assuming you have better luck or are more patient - and then navigate via Arts and/or the search facility to find it. It contains a good photo, from 1966, of Sandy at the Marquee Club in London.

One other thing. I have been unable so far to locate anything about the Sandy Denny memorial concert held at the QEH earlier this month. Was anyone there? How was it?

Hi Colin

There has been quite a lot of discussion of the QEH gig on other fora. I came here expecting a thread on this site and was surprised to find none. My blog has links to Robin Denselow's 4-star review in The Guardian and some clips on YouTube. I hope to publish some photos after Christmas.

Funny, I was just going to post to this thread, and was searching for it when it popped back up to the top. Great article, Colin - what I'd like now is some feedback on this album by people who have heard it. Anybody?

Re the recent tribute concert, there's a discussion of it in the Beeb boards, including comments by Jim Moray:

Thanks Bonnie. I love the album for what it is, a great piece of history made better still by Jerry's obvious production skills and his access to new technology (and two fellow survivors of the band's line-up).

I found Sandy's Wild Mountain Thyme slightly jarring at first, but only because I was unfamiliar with the melodic nuances of her version. Once I became accustomed to these, I came to the view that it was - with Silver Threads - the best thing on the album.

I'd be honest and say one or two of the tracks are skippable, but perhaps that is because there is not enough to distinguish them from the other versions that have been issued over the years. But I disagree with critics of Trevor Lucas; yes, the balance of Trevor/Sandy vocals should probably not have been loaded in his favour. But he did have a terrific folk-rock voice of the time.

Thanks to a private message from Philip, I have corrected the article at Salut! Live with regard to Martin Carthy's withdrawal from the concert, and I will correct The National's online version as soon as possible.
