Being a complete cyber-Bozo, this is really probably not even an issue with anyone else, but I have never met, been introduced to, or in any way known Jack Shit. Is there a way to get from one page to another? I mean if I'm checking out Skarpi, how do I get to the page with Helen or katlaughing? Or say I want to view my own mug and then want to see you and Rick at his concert (include Banj and you have the finalists for the "Goober" poster child--4 incredible goobers there) can I get from one to the other without coming back to the forum and using the link in the appropriate thread? catspaw (goober finalist) |
23 Jun 99 - 06:58 PM (#89169) Subject: RE: Mudcat album..new pics 6/21..2:30p.m. EST-USA From: Bill D well, 'spaw..it all depends on how clever/industrious the WebMeister (oohhh!! ME??) is..you can't easily put a link from every page to every other page, but there 'should' be a 'base' page where you have either thumbnail pics or a list of names, and I started out doing approximately that, but the needs of the Mudcat don't fit exactly with the 'fill in the blanks' template that I am working with, and I simply have not gotten into the learning curve far enough to do it the more elegant way... for one thing, our album, like Topsy, just sort of grows...I made a page of thumbnails, but in otder to add to it, I have to re-do the whole thumbnail page......and to put more than 3 links on a page, I have to hide them in the text beside the pictures...and I grouped it first by geography, but there are more of us in some places than others...and as it gets further along, it is more difficult to re-sort...and this is a BUSY summer..*grin*...I am in my workshop turning wood in every spare moment... (I keep hinting for some clever, knowlegeable person to take this away from me and do it right...but Mudcatters are known for being pretty smart *wink*) but, you are right, it need some polishing and re-arranging, and I will try to do something about it...if you go to the first page, you will find some links which get you into it a ways, but don't link to the newest pages...I will go look and see if I can at least provide a path that will get you to everyone if you come in at the 'main' page... (just a thought...do you know Bruce Phillips story about 'Moose Turd Pie'? *evil grin*)

24 Jun 99 - 05:46 AM (#89307) Subject: RE: Mudcat album..new pics 6/21..2:30p.m. EST-USA From: Banjer Goober Peas! Yes, Kat, they are peanuts and that song is sung at a lot of reenactments. Goobers are still popular here in the sunny South. According to the book, "Singing Soldiers, A History Of The Civil War In Song" compiled by Paul Glass, the song was written by P. Pintar, Esq., music by P. Nutt, Esq. (I just copy it like it says, I didn't make that one up!) Part of his commentary says; "One way of passing the time, when not on the march or at drill, was to get together around the campfire and enjoy some informal singing. This delightful Confederate song has a spontaneity and simplicity with that spirit of songmaking and rhyme that lets the mind forget the orders, the dust, and the blistering feet. Mistaken for Pete Seeger! What an honor and a privilige that would be! Would but that I could play like him so that mistake were possible! Folks have refered to my banjo as a deadly weapon, so yes, I could well be there. |

I'll tell you about the worst job I ever had. It was working for the Santa Fe Rail Road south of Las Vegas, Nevada. That's the old Mormon Muddy Mission, way out in what the Navajos called the "boonies", out in the desert. The job was gandy-dancing. Now, gandy-dancing used to be in the old days when the Irish were building the rail road. Of course, the first transcontinental rail road was built by Irish labor, and they used these long handled shovels called "Irish Banjos" that were made by the Gandy Shovel Company of Chicago. Now, the Irish laborer would take the wide end of the shovel, when he could find it, and he would jam it in under the rail or tie, and he would climb out on the long handle...do a little jig step out there. And they would lever the tie up and they'd push gravel up underneath it, and tamp it down; and that level the road bed. See, that's what gandy-dancing is...leveling the road bed so the damn train didn't fall off as it goes by...which is just a big drag for everybody. Now, they don't do gandy-dancing in the normal way anymore, see, like they did in the old days. Nowadays they run 3 cars out on the line. They run a box car out there that's a bunk car; you sleep in it and it's got bunks that are 18 inches apart. Then you got a tool car with your tamping irons, your tongs, your double jack hammers, and your spikes, and all of the equipment to do the job. And then you got a cook car. There's no restaurants anyplace, so you got a cook car; pots and pans, a coal or wood burning stove, and a long table down the middle to eat at. The only thing they don't hire is a cook That's because they're cheap; saves them money. The rule is that in the crew they're supposed to pick among their own members, who's going to be the cook. They don't try to do this sensibly, like draw lots or decide who the best cook is. What they do is wait to find out who bitches and whines and pisses and moans the most about the cooking, and they say "all right wise-guy, you think you can do better, you get to be the cook". Well, that was me, see! Ol' alligator mouth, new man on the crew ; and that was the worst food I'd ever had. I mean it was otter water, comes out of an otter; terrible terrible stuff. Some people think that's a delicacy, but I thought it was garbage. So I complained, so they said "ok, wiseguy, you get to be the cook". That made me mad! Because I didn't want to cook, but I knew if anybody complained about my cooking, they were going to have to cook. Armed with that knowledge, I sallied forth over the muddy river. I was walking around among the sheet grass and the bunch grass, and I looked down, and there was just a hell of a big moose turd. Biggest damn moose turd; that was a real steamer! I looked down at that meadow wafer, and I said to myself "Self, I'm going to bake up a big moose turd pie." Because if anybody complained about my cooking, they were going to have to cook. So I tipped that pasture pastry up on edge. I got my shit together, so to speak. And I started rolling it down towards the old cook car. BALUUMP! BALUUMP! I got it down there and leaned it up against the side and I climbed up in the cook car, and I baked a hell of a big pie shell. And I baked that moose turd in as slick as you please. And I cribbed it with my thumbs, and laid strips of dough across it, & garnished it with a sprig of parsley, a little paprika. It was beautiful; poety on a plate. And I served it up for dessert, waiting for the first hint of a complaint. Well, this giant dude comes in, about 5 foot 40; I mean he was big. Throwed himself down like a fool on a stool. Picked up his fork. Took a big bite of that moose turd pie. Well, he threw down his fork, and he let out a bellow, and he yelled.. "My God! That's Moose Turd Pie! ... It's Good, Though!" |
24 Jun 99 - 01:48 PM (#89394) Subject: RE: Mudcat album..new pics 6/21..2:30p.m. EST-USA From: gargoyle Part of the humor in the piece is found in the absence of moose in the southwestern U.S. The man is referring to a large cow-patty.
During my scatological sojourns in Maine the locals (Maniacs) used to laugh hysterically about the dumb summer people who would buy "moose-turd-jewelry." A moose turd is about size of the first digit of an index-finger and in the smooth oval shape of a pecan; they are fiberous like compressed partical-board and found in abundance throughout the North-Maine-Woods. Locals would shellac them and then string them into necklaces and earrings. They sold in gift shops for 15 to 25 dollars. Cost of materials about five cents. It is/was great for the local economy. |
