Arlo Guthrie - worth seeing these days?

Looking through some upcoming gigs in York at the Duchess (which is a reasonably new venue) I noticed that Arlo Guthrie is playing next year. Has anyone seen him recently and would recommend him? I used to enjoy him in the late 60s - early 70s but that's a long time ago.

Interesting range of people playing though so I am weighing up whether I can afford to see him, Fairport, Wishbone Ash, Teddy Thompson, Eliza Carthy, Aynsley Lister and Jennifer Batten over the next few months, or who I leave out.

You do not want to miss Arlo Guthrie if you have a chance to see him. He puts on a wonderful and warm show and he sounds better than ever. I cannot think of anyone who is as comfortable on a stage as Arlo. GO SEE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm. I'd say Arlo's shows are 1/3 singing, and 2/3 storytelling, and 100% enjoyable. The audiences are fascinating to watch, too. I'd often wondered where all those strange hippies from the 60's went. Well, they all show up for Arlo concerts. Maybe they go back into hibernation when the concert's over.

Whatever the case, an Arlo concert is always an absolute pleasure.

And darn funny, too. Arlo may be 75% stand-up comic and 25% folksinger.

Amen to all that. The last few times I caught him I had the added pleasure of his daughter Sarah Lee and her husband Johnny Irion opening... they are their own kind of wonderful fun.

Go!

Dani (too young to be THAT kind of hippie)

I saw him 2 or 3 years ago and he was hilarious! The singing is good, too, but the way that man's mind works is fantastic. Among other things, he talked about the troubles he had with airport security, when they were giving him a hard time (long hair, guitar case, etc., etc.), and he said, "So I told 'em, 'You've got it all wrong, guys -- I'm not nearly the threat I had hoped to become...' "

Yes, go see him if you have the chance!

Nancy

I second Ron and Dani and Nancy and..........

Listen, Arlo may well be, and for my money is, at the top of his form. He's a far better everything in his 60's than he was in his 20's. I can't think of anyone I'd rather go spend my money to see than Arlo.

Yeah, I've always loved him and so has Karen but as he has aged is is indeed the fine wine. If he's coming where you are or anyways near close be sure you go if you can. You'll not regret it! Generally when I say something like that I always worry that the person will go and it will be a bad night. In the case of Arlo I have no fear that will happen. His worst night will still be good. Like Ron said, he's been at this for a long time, often up close and personal with his audience, and at this point he might well be in his own home and you've dropped by......he's that comfortable......and you will be too.

Go see him!

We saw him recently at Royce Hall at UCLA where he started off the Anniversary show for the Ash Grove coffee house in Santa Monica. He said he was corralled into coming onto the show, but did a great job opening up the show.

We saw him a two years and a half ago at the Kate Wolf Festival in northern California and he did the show with his daughter and son-in-law. He went into telling Alice's Restaurant and it was wonderful. I really liked how his daughter and son-in-law sat down onto the stage at his feet and listened to the story. It was wonderful...see him!!

Arlo is still wonderfully entertaining. Get yourself tickets even if you have to mortgage the ranch or sell your boots and saddle to get them.

Arlo was the headliner at the Florida Folk Festival a few years back. As a general rule, no matter who the headliner is, about half the people in the campground would rather stay there and jam than make the trek to the main stage. Well, when we got back to the campground after Arlo's performance, there wasn't a jam session to be heard anywhere. Everyone had gone to see him.

he has gone silver, and is wonderful. plus he is the son of the legendary Woody Guthrie, but carries the show on his own. I am glad to see so many good reviews and positive encouraging advice to see and hear him! here is a picture of him at that same festival as above with a larger-than-life photo of his dad behind him. http://www.geocities.com/phil_doubleu/LiveMusic/pages/Arlo_Guthrie_02.htm

check out his web site www.arlo.net

I wouldn't want to miss a performance if he were appearing anywhere in Maine.

I saw him in NY a few years back. He was wonderful. And you never know who is going to drag out on stage. Great music, great stories, great humor. Don't miss him.

I also would NEVER miss, if possible, a performance by the great Arlo Guthrie. He elicits laughter with stories and songs and always delivers unforgettable moments of humour, pleasure and emotions. Don't miss a chance to see this icon of folk.

Arlo is still the best, go to see him any chance you get. Love the photo with Woody in the background. Does anyone know where it was taken?

I saw Arlo in late August at a small venue with a very large admission fee. I was a little put off by the fact that he had backed Ron Paul for president, but forgot about it once Arlo came on stage. He did a lot of blues, and I had forgotten what a fine musician he is. Don't miss him

That's correct. I took both pictures at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma on July 14, 2007 (Woody's birthday). The picture of Woody is printed on a large scrim hanging at the very back of the stage.

He had an old band-mate of mine playing Peddle steel and banjo and mandolin with him for the last 7 years or so but I think Gordon Titcomb moved on to working with Paul Simon at the moment . What Ive seen on YT of Arlo's music looks like a great show .. All the best , Guy

Can only echo what the others have said. He's hilarious and brilliant in equal measure. GO. (And take me with you in your pocket, if you can figure out how to do the teleportation thing.)

Merry Christmas everybody -

Looks a bit like Mark Twain these days. Here he is singing a pretty good song. (I'd say his dad would have agreed with me there.)
