From: Nick Looking through some upcoming gigs in York at the Duchess (which is a reasonably new venue) I noticed that Arlo Guthrie is playing next year. Has anyone seen him recently and would recommend him? I used to enjoy him in the late 60s - early 70s but that's a long time ago. Interesting range of people playing though so I am weighing up whether I can afford to see him, Fairport, Wishbone Ash, Teddy Thompson, Eliza Carthy, Aynsley Lister and Jennifer Batten over the next few months, or who I leave out. |

He puts on a wonderful and warm show and he sounds better than ever. I cannot think of anyone who is as comfortable on a stage as Arlo. GO SEE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The audiences are fascinating to watch, too. I'd often wondered where all those strange hippies from the 60's went. Well, they all show up for Arlo concerts. Maybe they go back into hibernation when the concert's over. Whatever the case, an Arlo concert is always an absolute pleasure. And darn funny, too. Arlo may be 75% stand-up comic and 25% folksinger. -Joe- |

The singing is good, too, but the way that man's mind works is fantastic. Among other things, he talked about the troubles he had with airport security, when they were giving him a hard time (long hair, guitar case, etc., etc.), and he said, "So I told 'em, 'You've got it all wrong, guys -- I'm not nearly the threat I had hoped to become...' Listen, Arlo may well be, and for my money is, at the top of his form. He's a far better everything in his 60's than he was in his 20's. I can't think of anyone I'd rather go spend my money to see than Arlo. Yeah, I've always loved him and so has Karen but as he has aged is is indeed the fine wine. If he's coming where you are or anyways near close be sure you go if you can. You'll not regret it! Generally when I say something like that I always worry that the person will go and it will be a bad night. In the case of Arlo I have no fear that will happen. His worst night will still be good. Like Ron said, he's been at this for a long time, often up close and personal with his audience, and at this point he might well be in his own home and you've dropped by......he's that comfortable......and you will be too. From: GUEST,astro We saw him recently at Royce Hall at UCLA where he started off the Anniversary show for the Ash Grove coffee house in Santa Monica. He said he was corralled into coming onto the show, but did a great job opening up the show. We saw him a two years and a half ago at the Kate Wolf Festival in northern California and he did the show with his daughter and son-in-law. He went into telling Alice's Restaurant and it was wonderful. I really liked how his daughter and son-in-law sat down onto the stage at his feet and listened to the story. As a general rule, no matter who the headliner is, about half the people in the campground would rather stay there and jam than make the trek to the main stage. Well, when we got back to the campground after Arlo's performance, there wasn't a jam session to be heard anywhere. Everyone had gone to see him. |

I was a little put off by the fact that he had backed Ron Paul for president, but forgot about it once Arlo came on stage.He did a lot of blues, and I had forgotten what a fine musician he is.
