07 Jan 09 - 05:37 AM (#2533837) Subject: RE: Vin Garbutt FaldingworthLive Jan 17 2009 From: Rasener If people are ill Breezy, they do not pay. We have a good group of people who let me know if they are ill. The rest turn up. It works well. People who let me down, go on the blacklist and have to pay in advance from then on. Its reserve and pay on the door. We always have a 30 minute break between the 2 sets and do the raffle then. Most people have bought their raffle tickets before then. There is normally at least half a dozen raffle prizes. |
07 Jan 09 - 06:00 AM (#2533848) Subject: RE: Vin Garbutt FaldingworthLive Jan 17 2009 From: evansakes Les, I know it's "horses for courses" and perhaps it's different for you in more of a rural community but we found the 'reservation' system didn't work for us at Twickenham. People who'd reserved were regular 'no-shows'. Which wouldn't have been a problem if they were regulars...when as you say you could black-list them. Based in sprawling suburbia we get many more 'irregulars' and we found the only way we could pretty much guarantee them keeping their word was to have their money upfront. Even then we still get quite a few 'no-shows'! The final straw for us was after we took 85 reservations for Eliza Gilkyson a few years back and (with a week to go) declared the gig a sell-out and turning away all further enquiries. About 30 of the 85 didn't show and we only had about 10 turn up on spec. As a result the turnover wasn't quite what I'd predicted to the agent and we got in some hot water. We decided from then on we had to go with the "bird in the hand" (and it's worked well for us). So the money for our gig with Vin is 100% banked and he'll get paid accordingly.......even if nobody turns up (imagine that!) Gerry |
07 Jan 09 - 06:11 AM (#2533857) Subject: RE: Vin Garbutt FaldingworthLive Jan 17 2009 From: Rasener Gerry I understand what you are saying and no doubt in your circumstances I would do the same. However for us, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Becuase I do the reservations I know the people and so have a close eye on the situation. We pay a base guarantee and it is always a reasonable figure agreed by the performer, and on the night I pay 80% of the door whichever is greater. We don't normally get people turning up on the door, without reserving. Les |
07 Jan 09 - 08:39 AM (#2533973) Subject: RE: Vin Garbutt FaldingworthLive Jan 17 2009 From: Tim Leaning It always suprises me how many ways there are to get to the same point. Bums on seats, great performers doing what they do and a team of people in the background who keep it all going so us idle music lovers can pick and choose when we can be bothered to come along and enjoy. All credit to ya V (and all you others doing the same work however differently you do it) Maybe there should be a thread on the cat about how to ....... (JOKE!) |

You are stuck somewhere miles from the event with half an hour to go. Somehow you manage to get there by running through tunnels, jumping over cliffs, swimming through rapids, avoiding James Bond, with 5 minutes to spare. Only to find that nobody is there.... etc etc. Then you wake up in bed and find its 4:30 in the morning LOL :-) Anyway I will ask Vin to do that one. Cheers Les |

17 Jan 09 - 08:11 PM (#2541789) Subject: RE: Vin Garbutt FaldingworthLive Jan 17 2009 From: Tim Leaning Just returned from a wonderful evening of music, and laughter at Faldingworth Live. A band I never heard before going by the name of Blues Connection had what I would have thought was daunting task of starting the evening . They are Helen on vocal and percussion, Pete(Mr Helen) ,on Guitar And Lightning Lips (Bob?) on various harmonicas. There they were, the three blues persons facing the ravening hoards of Vin Garbut fans that were the audience. Well if you had been there you would know they were bloody brilliant. Got a real full sound from a beautifully played guitar, great vocal harmony's and what can be said about the harmonica that isn't covered by "Lightening Lips"? They soon had everybody "Ridin' and Rollin" from the off. Then a classic with "Buddy can you spare a dime", left us "Sitting on top of the World". All great versions. Then crazy fingers Pete put together a Ragtime medley on his Taylor that would have had your fingers in knots anyway, but this was after the invasion of the Bat thing. Well it was an actual bat that got into the venue somehow and seemed keen to join Blues Connection on Stage. They finished with some more songs by Blake and the rather lovely "I'm all right I've been lonely before" that showed off Helens rather wonderful voice to great effect. (Well I was affected). They were truly professional throughout and carried off a greatly enjoyed, if rather short set, for an appreciative crowd. Well done chaps. Of course the tone of the evening was soon lowered by the mighty Vin Garbut. The man is a legend , and anyone who has had the pleasure of experiencing his show will know why. He has of course, written many great songs, and covers many others. He is superbly funny. What gets you is the switch from uproarious laughter to the complete description of the human condition he can put into ordinary words. Words that even you and I use every day. The man comes alive on stage in away that only truly great performers can. And you can feel the real human heart beating away through the laughter and the music. Songs he performed were, "The Turner", "Morning informs of my dreaming", " Forty Thieves" (Well done Dave Evardson), "John you have gone", "Punjabi Girl", "Streets of Staithes", "England My England", "Beggars Bridge", "Fear of Imperfection", "Be as Children", "Teacher from Persia", and "Man of the earth". I apologise for any misspellings , missing outs, or misunderstandings in advance, (of complaints being received). It was a great night and the Faldingworth team as ever deserve our thanks and support. Cheers All. |

There was a bat Where? There in the hall Where in the hall? Right there A little bat with clogs on Well I declare Going flip flipety flap in the hall Oh yeah. The bat was a bonus guest, which I didn't want anybody to know about before the gig. Well worth seeing it though. 10/10 for suggesting opening 2 doors and letting the bat float out on the air current. Where did it come from? Vin's wife said it had come out of Vin's hair. Thanks for a great audience turnout as well as Gwenda & Terry for PA/MC and Dave/Di/Tom for all their hard work on the hall side. |

I see no harm in him advertising hard on Mudcat, he does contribute a lot to other threads as well. Is there a little jealousy here on how succesful his events are? Paul |
18 Jan 09 - 12:36 PM (#2542295) Subject: RE: Vin Garbutt FaldingworthLive Jan 17 2009 From: Rasener Welcome to my thead Bob. You have a nice club. Why don't you post threads about your club. Its always nice to see what other clubs in the UK are up to. Its also useful for mudcatters who happen to be in your area for work or holiday. You have some good acts coming up. http://www.sunrayfolkclub.co.uk/ Next time I am in Weymouth I will try and visit you club assuming you have something on when I am there. Les Worrall Thanks for the support Paul. |
