BS: Trivia test

Subject: BS: Trivia test
From: kendall

Here's a little test that no one can win without looking up the answers. When I was in high school I had a math teacher who gave these general knowledge tests just to break up the monotony of studying math. I though they were fun.

1 What state has the largest number of neighboring states?
2 In what film was this statement spoken? "Hit the antennae; he's helpless without them."
3 What is the London Eye?
4 What was Martha Washington's maiden name?
5 Who invented the modern automobile?
6 What was the name of the treaty that ended the Mexican war?
7 What is the capital of Tasmania?
8 In what country is Timbuctu?
9 What was the name of the treaty that ended the war of 1812?
10 What was Roy Roger's real name?
11 What was John Wayne's real name?
12 Who said, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead."?
13 What was the name of Henry Hudson's ship?
14 " Roul Amundsen's ship? Not sure of spelling. He explored the south pole.
15 Who discovered radium?
16 Where is the place called "Donnybrook"?
17 Who is buried in Grant's tomb? (careful, trick question)

Looking up the answers is no fair!

2 - Honey I Shunk the Kids or Fern Gully?
3a - it is either Dolly or she has no middle name?
3b - big ferris wheelie type attraction, the cars are big glass pods that hold 12 to 20 people each... good for getting a sortof bird's eye view of London
6 - it is in north west Africa - don't know country
9 - Marion something
13 - Marie Curie

god that is embarrasing..

1. Connecticut
2. 'It' (gotta be one of those giant radiation mutated bug movies) Could be 'Star Wars' though.
3. a cut of beef
3. Dandridge (Recently looked through a book I brought out of the basement 'Life of Washington', written by his step son. It pays to rummage!)

'6 In what country is Timbuctu?'
Curmudgeon: '6 - Leaonard Sly'
'6 is a town.'

I'm guessing Timbuctu is NOT in a country which is a town named 'Leonard Sly'. I'm confused, but I'm used to that.

6 Turkey

Some of the numbers are duplicated.

Now for some guesswork...

1 - Mass.; five states
2 "Them"
4a - Daimler
6 - Madagascar
14 - Ireland

Georgiansilver, Africa is a continent not a country ....

and Versailles was the treaty that ended WWI and started WWII,   wasn't it?

My tiebreaking vote for #1: Tennessee, not Connecticut.

6. Mali (which is in West Africa ~ not Turkey, which is mostly in Asia)

9. Marion Morison = John Wayne

15. nobody (just a guess)

2   Sounds like something involving giant ants; ?"Them"
3   It's a gigantic Ferris Wheel in London (who called this city "the great wen"?)
4   Daimler? Benz?
5   Hobart
6   Is it Morocco, or Chad; certainly North West Africa. Who was the first white man - as far as we know - to get there and return?
7   For some reason, "Treaty of Paris" comes to mind, but that doesn't make much sense unless Napoleon had abdicated and the Brits and Americans met there for some reason
9   Marion Morison (Why was he called "[little] Duke"?)
10 Captain Farragut; was it during the Civil War?
13 Madame Curie
14 Near to Baile Atha Cliath in Ireland; when was the Fair proscribed, and what's Donnybrook, Dublin 4, better known for today?
15 Maybe Grant's tomb is actually a Cenotaph, i.e. empty (but curmudgeon makes a good suggestion)

How's that, kendal? Now you try these:

Who said of whom; "This man was hired to depress art"?
Tell me the names of three of Napoleon's horses?
What, and why, is "Chicken Marengo"?
Who made the song "Auld Lang Syne"?
Are there any lakes in Scotland?
Really?
And, is Lochnagar a salt-water or freshwater loch?

10 Capt James T Kirk of the USS Enterprise   ;-)

I believe, but you won't let me look it up, that the full name of the treaty ending the Mexican War was "Guadalupe Hidalgo."

I remember learning that Ms Washington was Martha Custis Washington, but Custis could have been the name of her first husband.

If Grant, or the Grants, are not interred in Grants Tomb, then Groucho Marx gave away a lot of consolation prizes in error.

I got nine out of ten, but I'm not going to post the answers OR tell you which one I didn't get. But I will help mislead the young:

Timbuktoo (or Timbucto, or other variant spellings) is a great restaurant between DC and Baltimore. Has some terrific cream of crab soup and crab cakes.

A question of my own. Why are there two more questions than numbers?

Modern car? Define. Probably, by some criterions, Oldsmobile.

I knew 7 of them without looking anything up!

In fact, when I was in 5th grade, I got on a 'local' version of the "Quiz Kids" radio program but not only knowing Tennessee bordered the most states, but by naming them.

I also knew 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15

'almost' had 2 more.

I have mind like flypaper....stuff sticks to it, but randomly.

By "Modern automobile" I was referring to the internal combustion engine. Daimler teamed up with a money man named Carl Benz, and one of the stipulations Benz put in the deal was that the car would be named for his daughter, Mercedes.
Now, you know, but do you care?

Aye, Megan, wur pal Muckart haes a taste fur Trick Questions, daes he no'? That being so, I'm guessing he's playing games with the reference to "Auld Lang Syne". As far as I remember, didn't the Bard himself say that the words published in the SMM were never in print until he "took them down from an old man's singing", i.e., he didn't claim them for his own?

(Re. "Trick Questions"; "The Lake of Menteith" is actually a misunderstanding of the Scots "Laigh of Menteith", a "laigh" being a low-lying area, whether or no there's a body of water there. Similarly, "Lochnagar" is an Anglicisation of Gaelic "Lachan Y Gair", and if Teribus look at a map of the Balmoral Estate he'll see what Megan means).
