BS: Prayers/Good Thoughts Needed (NeilD)

12 Jan 09 - 06:55 PM (#2538419)
Subject: BS: Prayers/Good Thoughts Needed
From: Azizi

Another Mudcatter and I have been in ongoing communication with Mudcatter NeilD. Neil has been diagnosed with cancer and has been undergoing chemo treatment.

Neil and his wife, Christina, {who has posted here as a guest} have been giving us updates about Neil's condition. But since Neil is such a private person, until today he was reluctant about informing others about his serious condition. However, I received permission today to post this thread asking for prayers and good thoughts for him.

Here's an excerpt of the email I received from Neil today:

"During the last week, while I was getting my third round of chemo, they did a Cat-scan and the MRI to prepare for my upcoming operation, which as you know was supposed to be the amputation of my leg at the hip. They did the scans on Thursday and the Orthopedic surgeon was scheduled to come to see me on Friday. Well he came in at 4:30 Thursday with a big smile on his face and said that the tumor had shrunk so much that he is now going to be able to remove
it and save my leg. He won't even have to remove the femur and replace it with a steel rod.

This was the miraculous reaction to the chemo that I fantasized about but NOBODY believed was going to actually happen. I will lose 80% of the muscle in my thigh and will always have a stiff legged limp but what the heck. There is still a 15% chance of infection that would take my leg after all and a 10%chance of a remission but these are still my best odds yet. The Cat-scan was clean as well, meaning that it still hasn't shown up in my lungs yet. The chemo has hit me a bit harder this time around AND I get three more rounds after the surgery, but , believe me , I'm not complaining about the side effects considering how unbelievably well it is working."

-snip-

NeilD's surgery is scheduled for February 2, 2009. While Neil has received good news that his tumor has shrunk, he still needs our prayers, good thoughts, and best wishes.

This thread provides an opportunity for us to send our Mudcat energy out to Neil. Those who want to send a private message to NeilD can also do so.

Please post to this thread and let Neil know that we surround him with positive, healing thoughts.

Actually Neil, ya' kinda' piss me off........You've been here for a good while and are a respected member of the community and private or not, a little heads up was in order. This place does care about its own far more than other places on the net and frankly more than some places I've lived in 3D. So that said.................

Sounds like a rough road you been travelling but may have come to a smooth spot. You have all my best thoughts for everything to go as it should and as you dream it can be. I like Docs that lay it out for you, ya' know? That way whatever happens, you're somewhat prepared and hopefully have thought through it. On one of my heart surgeries the Doctor said, "Well, the first major side effect possibility is death." Then he went on to list about 30 other things so by the time he got to stuff that might normally have scared the livin' hell out of me, it was no big deal........."Oh yeah, I can handle that......"

Someone told me once that the important thing was to do everything I could and then get on with living.......and they were right. You do the same! Spaw said so.........

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers. These mean so much. I thought about soliciting these a few months ago but I just didn't know how to ask in such a public forum. I have been in touch with Azizi and one other Catter throughout this ordeal and they have proven to be among the truest, most supportive of friends.
I have always known and wondered at what a caring comunity is Mudcat.
Having good wishes and positive energy flowing in from all over is overwhelming. Thanks to Spaw for considering me a respected member of this community. Just so long as I don't have to start being respectable. ;^)
As you can see from Azizi's opening post, we have just received the first good news in a while. Nearly miraculous news actually!
There was one typo in my original message to Azizi. Where I typed:
There is still a 15% chance of infection that would take my leg after all and a 10%chance of a remission but these are still my best odds yet. I meant: a 10% chance of recurrence, obviously much better than only a 10% chance of remission. I must have had a touch of chemo fog while I was typing and proofing that sentence. So it seems we have turned a corner towards some cautious optimism and we continue to move forward with positive determination. I have been blessed with a wonderful wife and family, true friends, a very supportive employer and with the continued encouragement, prayers and powerful energy from all of you I feel confident we'll come out on top of this.

Giving thanks for what has already improved and for a complete and successful surgery and subsequent treatment with complete remission for now and always. I give thanks for this or something better for the highest good of all concerned. (And, what Spaw said!)

I also recommend another Medicine Sutra on youtube, but don't forget that laughter really can be the best medicine, too. I cannot find a specific reference to humour that Iwas looking for on this website and I don't attest to everything it purports, but I do find a lot of good at The Secret which you can watch online.

All the best of everything to you and your family, Neil,

Kat, you're right--laughter is great medicine! I will offer one note of caution--don't laugh so hard that you strain your stitches after surgery. :)

I recall returning home in 2000 after abdominal surgery for cancer, and turning on The Golden Girls. I remembered that it was funny, but in that viewing it was SO funny that my stomach ached after two episodes in a row. But heck, I'm free of cancer, so maybe it worked!

Good luck, and best wishes.

Neil, candle is lit, and you are square in the prayers, buddy. The way you have handled this says much about you, sir. As Spaw says, do everything you can to fight this, and then get on with living. I rejoice in the news on the leg, but what the hell, you don't strum a guitar with your leg. ***chuckle***. Good for you.

And a note to Mudcatters. Could you all slow down on this stuff for a bit?? The good Father informs me that if I light many more candles, the structure might not survive. But he did say his heating bill is lower than it has been in years.

All the best,

Mick

Good for you Neil! Ending up with no more than a dented fender and a distinguished limp like Dr. House is damn good. After years of driving through life, a dented fender is a darn sight better than no fender. I'm counting on you to share the good news come March when you will be on your feet again.

Sharing medical expense information could end up giving you some benefits you don't know about yet. There are lots of people here who could lend advice regarding medical bills, including my wife who works in that field.
Cutting bills down to size is a good thought indeed.

Donuel is right...talk to them and talk to them some more...the billing depts. of wherever you get your treatments. They can be quite creative and helpful. I know from personal experience.

As to the laughter...PBS has a new series on called Make Them Laugh. It just started this week and featured a lot of Jack Benny and George Burns and other greats. I thought of you and hoped maybe you'd been able to tune in. There are some "online episodes" HERE.

More good thoughts and thanks givings,

YAHOO.

Just received the following from Neil:

"Dear Bruce,
Sorry we are just now catching up with our E-mails 5 days after the
surgery but we just got home. Chris stayed with me in the hospital so we had
no access to the internet until now. Anyhow, the surgery went very well. The
tumor was huge, as big as a Rugby ball, but Dr. Weiner is pretty sure he got
it all. There was one spot where it went right up to the femur and he won't
know for sure if it is completely clean until he sees the margins (tissue
sample pathologies). Even if that spot needs cleaned up he is sure a little
more radiation will do the trick. That would be after we finish off three
more rounds of chemo. If all goes to plan I'll start back into chemo the
first week of March and be done by the end of April. My plan is to get back
to work sometime in May and be doing two and half mile walks, unassisted, by
midsummer. Right now I can get in and out of bed and up from most chairs and
I can even go up and down stairs with effort. It's possible I may have to use
a walking stick for long walks and I will always have a noticeable limp but I
intend to rehab as much as possible. The biggest pitfall to avoid right now
are the "hospital" infections: staph; MRSA and a particular common one
lately, C-diff. These could be as potentially threatening as cancer right
now, but so far so good on that front. You can share any of this with anyone
who might be interested along with our gratitude for everyone's thoughts and
prayers."

the margins (tissue sample pathologies) -

when my pathology report included the term 'Margins clear', I thought it meant the absolute edges of the samples were clear, so that if there were any cancer cells in the huge lump of tissue, they were in the middle.

wishing you clear margins!

Well we went back to the ortho surgeon today to have Neil's staples removed, 44 of them. The surgeon said everything has gone as well as he could have ever imagined it would. The incision is healing up great, and he can now walk around the house without the leg brace. The Doc said all of the margins came back negative, what that means is the extra tissue they took around the tumor, healthy tissue, came back with no cancer cells!!! YAY!!!! He still has to have 3 rounds of chemo but will probably not have to have any more radiation. And they will always watch for recurrence, but how can it possibly think of coming back with all of the prayers, positive energy, and support of many, many friends and family. Soooo.... thanks again everyone, your kindness has made this journey a little easier for us to bear.

Well Neil had the first of the last chemo treatments this week. He came through pretty good. It did however take a lot out of him and made him pretty sick. It's taking a little longer for him to bounce back. The doctor said after the 3rd round that he is going to have a PET scan done. I guess this is the best test they have for seeing even small areas of cancer in the body. Hopefully they won't see any. Will keep everyone up to date. I also wanted to say that with all of the threads where people need support and prayers for various reasons, that I think this is a WONDERFUL community full of kind and caring people. Christina, a very good friend of ours has had a similar run, and it is really amazing how well these treatments can work, these days. Sometimes it can be scary, when the treatments take a lot of the person's strength... and then it is equally amazing how our bodies can regain unbelievable strength much more quickly than our minds can foresee.

Don't forget to let people take care of you, too, OK?

Thanks Christina.....and we're all hoping for the best outcomes possible and so far it just sounds great!   Chemo can take it out of you but afterwards we expect Neil back here in good form! This place has an amazing power to provide support through love.....I know. I've been on the receiving end. Take care and tell Neil we're waiting for his healthy return.

I just finished my 5th round of chemo yesterday, and came home from the hospital today. Only one more round to go... YAY!!!! I have a little more side effects, nausea, fatigue etc... each time, but nothing I can't handle, especially since the chemo has worked so remarkably well. It's good to get back home even though it will take about a week to feel normal again. Rehab on the leg is coming along nicely.I am walking without a cane or brace, and have just a slight limp. Just before I went into the hospital I had worked up to a 2 mile continuous walk.I still have to work on the pace. I walked 1 mile a day in the hospital dragging my I.V. pole with me, even on my worst days. I am thankful for the people that are still keeping us in their thoughts and prayers, Mudcatter's are the BEST! Will update as we get more info.

                                     Love to all,
                                       Neil

Neil will be going back in the hospital on the 11th of May for his last round of chemo. Then they will do a PET scan to see if all is clear. Please keep fingers crossed for the much wanted outcome. Thanks everyone.

Chemo knocked out my cancer and I hope it puts you in full remission too. It's rough living through the "dishrag days' of feeling completely helpless that increase as Chemo progresses, but being in remission is a great thing, even though I got diabetes as an after-effect of my last treatment when I couldn't hold food and my blood sugar spiked skyward. May all your CT and PET scans prove you free and clear that myself and the rest of us may count you as another survivor.

Good luck from one who's been there and back. It's good to be alive!

Hi Neil,

Saw in another thread that you are home from your 6th round. (and I apologize that I pulled up a thread for some one else when I went looking for this one.)

Hope you are recovering from the after effects and that the follow-up scans look good and clear.

Well it's over for now, hopefully for good. I just finished my 6th and, we hope, last round of chemotherapy. I'll continue to have various tests and scans for the rest of my life, but for now the prognosis seems fairly positive and we're holding on to that. I can't say enough how grateful I am to everyone here who has given support, encouragement, good wishes and prayers throughout this scary, trying time. Know that we are sending some of that love back to you and to all others here who are having trying times of their own, we send a little extra.

BRAVO******APPLAUSE*******CHEERS!!!!!!

Obviously we are all pleased to see how well you have done.....Good job Neil!

AND GREAT JOB CHRISTINA!!!!! You had the tough part. I know.....I've watched Karen over the past years and yours was the hardest part to play. Now I know Neil was the sick one and he went through the treatment but there ain't really nothin' to that. When you're in that position its like riding an elephant downhill......Once it gets moving you just have to hold on for the ride!   Your part is always more difficult and filled with fears and terrors that are yours alone. Be sure to unload on him and get all of that out......I know he can take it. If you're married to your best friend you do that give and take all the time.......and I think, like Karen and me, you are.

All Our Best to You Both,

Pat and Karen

Final update... hopefully. Neil went back to work full time on June 2nd. He is doing GREAT! He walks 2 miles daily on the walking path near our home, when the weather permits, not too shabby for a guy missing half the muscles in his leg! I am so proud of him. He has to be one of the bravest, strongest willed people I know. The ex-ray didn't show anything in the lungs. YAY! He goes back to the orthopedic oncologist the 30th to have the surgical area checked and a possible MRI done on that area. After that it should be smooth sailing. So.. once again thanks to all for your support and many blessings back to you.

Once in awhile I like to be the bearer of good news! Neil saw his Dr. the other day and all the x-rays and scans came back clean! The doc said he never likes to say 100% cured, but with Neil being 2 1/2 years cancer free now, he is very comfortable with 95% cured and if he stays cancer free at 5 years+ he will call it 98-99% cured!! Yay Neil!!!

                                  All my love,
