Do other catters know of the wonderfully bizarre poems and songs of Scottish performer Ivor Cutler.
You may have seen him acting as Buster Bloodvessel, the driver, in the Beatle's Magical Mystery Tour.

He has a small but convinced following here; mostly, perhaps, among the British contingent. There are only four other threads solely about him, I think:

24 March 06 Ivor Cutler Tribute
Death of Ivor Cutler (3 March 2006)
Ivor Cutler BBC4 UK
Ivor Cutler poetry?

... though also a fair few mentions in other threads that were mainly on other subjects.

My first memories of him were on the Acker Bilk tv show on BBC1 back in the 60's.

Was it Ivor Cutler who used to do a piece that went 'hold the barrel steady, jump in one at a time'?

If so, for some reason, James Whale when he was on TalkRadio/Sport used to use it as a jingle of sorts - I think he appeared on the show a few times too.

I've done a few songs that have raised a laugh - some of them even my own - but the only time I've ever made anyone laugh till they cried was when I did one of his. More details, and my personal tribute to the man, here. (Sadly neither of Clare's links are working, but the rest seem OK.)

The song, incidentally, can be heard here.

I just performed "My Elbows" at a show last night. It was a weird hit.
PS I am correcting an earlier error. Mr. Bloodvessel only THOUGHT that he was the bus driver.

I think it must have still been the late 50s when I first heard him on "Monday Night at Home". (The Home Service was what Radio 4 was called in those days)
I recall Fresh gruts fried in butter well.
There were a couple of brothers who did sketches on there too, Roddy & Paul McDowell- they seemed to do alright afterwards!
I will still occasionally ask people to
"Get the stuff. Take the Car. Drive down to Maidenhead. Hand the stuff over to You-know-who."
Does it ring any bells for anyone else? Is there anyone in the world who would know what I'm talking about?
Cheers
Dave

Yes, Dave (Darowyn), I do indeed remember that sketch - 'Get the stuff. Take the car, drive down to maidenhead' became a family saying. Still absolutely no idea what it was about. Wish there was a transcript or a recording somewhere...

Oh Gawd.

"Daddy, do we have to have gruts EVERY day?"
"Eat them up son. They're good for you."
"But I don't like them, daddy. In fact I HATE gruts."

Or something similar - sorry if I got it wrong Ivor. I can see him pedalling his harmonium now.

Ah well, I have it on good authority that he lived at the address that is on the back of all those vintage Topic LPs - 27 Nassington Road, London NW3, upstairs from Gerry Sharp - so there's a folk connection for Mudcatters to relish. Mike
