Where are the cods coming from who give up their livers to keep you meat eaters fit and supple? here it says there is a shortage of the fish.

Just wondering.

Cape Cod was famed & named after the abundant large fish local to the area. Today you can hardly hook or net a one that's over the legal limit in size. Where'd they go? Gone to oil every where, when will they ever learn?

Overfishing, by the US, Canada, and the European nations. See the book Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World by Mark Kurlansky.

Can you still buy cod liver oil? I know you can buy fish oil, but that's a different thing.

As a sufferer of rheumatoid arthritis, I was advised to try and did try supplements for the sake of my joints. Unforutnately they are either mixed with minerals and/or vitamin C and so tore my tummy up.

So I am not taking. I wonder if perhaps given the reduced fish stocks that it should be only a prescribable supplement for those with diagnosed joint problems?

Nah! A nightmare to administrate and drug companies won't touch production of naturally available herbs and oils because they can't patent them.

We are all f*cked!

Yes, you can still buy cod liver oil. It's at the local stores here. You can also buy a number of other fish oils.

And you don't want to know how they're made or what from, either. Let's just say that there aren't any derricks pumping out fish oil.

I'd druther eat the fish.

You can certainly still buy pure CLO in the UK, either in capsules or just bottled. Versions with various mineral/vitamin additions can also be had. Cod is still caught and eaten hereabouts, though quotas are in force to limit the take.

I haven't checked, but always assumed that fish oil was in fact fish liver oil, but from whatever species was victim of the moment.

No, thanks. It made me throw up when my mother gave it to me. I can throw up without it. I'm sure it's good for you and all that, and I wouldn't want to stop anyone from taking it.

I take fish oil in capsules. You can't taste the oil.
It's from anchovies and sardines. Good for you, and I can't get as much from eating fish.

Our dog loves the CLO capsules. We take vegetarian omega three capsules from Tesco - they are more expensive than CLO.

I tried fish oil capsules and burped fish taste.

My wife is trying them now. I gave up and decided to just eat salmon.

I"m afraid for me life,I"ll go down in the soil,
If me wife don't stop drinking your cod liver oil.

Actually, I quite like it,and at my age,I'm sure it's beneficial----Cod stocks, according to British newspapers of the last few days, have improved beyond measure in our waters,so no excuse for not taking it, OK ??

Cue for song...

And here's a YouTube clip to go with it, from the Ireland's western province, Newfoundland.

We don't have near enough music down here in the Basement Section...

Flaxseed oil supplement is the ideal equivalent to Cod Liver Oil for those who do not want to consume any animal ingredients.

That's good then.

snip
"However, for heart health, a fish oil dietary supplement is recommended by most medical experts and naturopathic practitioners. ALA needs to be converted to DHA and EPA in the body....and this conversion does not always take place, especially for people who are in less than optimal health. This would include many elderly folks. On the other hand, if you're in good health flax seed ALA may be converted by the body to DHA and EPA.

Thus, when the heart is concerned in the flax oil vs fish oil debate, fish oil wins in our opinion since you can get the crucial DHA and EPA directly through a quality fish oil. For brain health and symptoms like depression, a fish oil dietary supplement is recommended for much the same reasons.

The brain needs large amounts of DHA, but if the body needs the ALA for some other reason, it may not ever be converted to DHA."

We evolved eating meat and fish.

We evolved eating anything that came along. I suspect that meat and fish would have been pretty scarce items in the diets of our ancestors most of the time.

Of course hominids ate other things as well. My statement was not that our ancestors ate only meat and fish. Diet diversity allowed hominids to colonize many different types of climates and terrains in the world.

Hear hear!

I just know that I can't take a life. I have tried, and because it wasn't necessary, failed miserably. We can now live without meat or fish; I am very healthy and fit and have been veggie for 29 years. If I had to kill an animal, which to me means end it's life taking the life and soul of the creature, I would have to be desperately hungry.

It really isn't necessary in the 21st century and if we feel we should eat meat, we should experience first hand killing of an animal. I also think that all 6th formers should be forced to witness what goes on in slaughter yards.
