All the conventions of the smirking, winking, belittling political documentary are abided by in this film. An inordinate number of the yahoos wear T-shirts and weird caps. There is the obligatory NASCAR tailgating scene with the requisite Confederate flags and some white guys saying they'll never vote for any black man. There are a couple of campaign events sporting all-American schoolgirl choruses who sound like they're right off the "Up With People" tour bus. There is a young guy whose T-shirt, meant to deride Obama, declares "Say No to Socilism," and when Alexandra Pelosi tells him he's misspelled socialism and asks him to define it, we know he's not going to be able to, that he's going to say something way wrong and stupid -- which he does, offering that socialism is "basically, it's like the views of Hitler. It's between like communism and -- I don't know what the other word is." How odd to blame Alexandra Pelosi for giving some Republicans a chance to show how stupid they are. |

I don't have a television so I'll never see the series, but can speculate that the review is spot-on. I'm an old-fashioned liberal Democrat. Obama is not. Having said that, the hope that he offers is his attention to "We." It behooves us to follow his lead and strive to think in the same terms, rather than "us and them." Unless a significant number of us, meaning the citizens of this country irrespective of political persuasion, are willing to embrace the idea of "WE", and respect and hold others with different perspectives in unconditional positive regard, the hope has no chance of being realized. Laughing at people is not a very effective way to operate in the world. Neither is setting them up to appear laughable. |

I think it essential that we the people consciously cultivate our awareness of "We.". I often have difficulty remembering that, but make a conscious effort to be mindful. Making fun of ignorance does not educate. And most people who are conservative are not ignorant. They simply have a different perspective. I dare say that as many people who tend toward the Left are as ignorant as are people that tend toward the Right. (Again, whatever those two terms may mean.) I'd like to point out that 30 years ago all those "good old boys" were democrates! I'd also like to point out that a greater percentage of the republicans voted for civil rights. If you went to a Clinton rally, you would have seen her supporters with the pictures of President Obama dressed like Bin Laden. Isn't Jesse Jackson a democrate? I seem to remember he used the "N" word too. We need to get past the name calling and actually listen to each other. I did not vote for President Obama because I don't agree with his policies. I think the stimulus bill that congress threw together was a disaster! The banking melt-down is due to Barney Frank and the Congressional Banking committee forcing banks to make loans to people that had no hope of being able to afford it. Now we're going to raise taxes on the top one percent so everyone else can feel like they're getting even. The problem is the top one percent is currently paying 40% of all the taxes. The top 25% of wage-earners are currently paying almost 90% of all the taxes. Before this is all done the bottom 50 percent will have to pay more because the debt will be too great. I conceed that the republicans totally blew it when they had power! Is anyone out there willing to at least consider the possibility that 10 extra dollars a week might not help prime the economic pump? |

You may recall that Clinton presided over the longest period of prosperity in our history. Furthermore, you can't make me believe that one congressman has that much power. Regulation is the leash that holds back greed. Under Bush and his hand picked flunkie, Mr. Cox, the leash was dropped and greed was allowed to run free. I believe that what Allan Greenspan and Pat Buchanan said is more likely to be true; they both said that Bush is the culprit here.When a ship sinks does the cook get the blame? And good riddance. Reganomics, the notion that wealth would trickle down to the rest of society, left the rich far richer, the poor not much better off than where they started, and the middle class struggling to hold its ground. All no thanks to a government that Mr. Reagan so artfully condemned while using it to reverse a trend which, under more progressive post-World War II tax policies, allowed the poor and middle class to enjoy a greater measure of America's progress. More and more people know they're slipping. In Gallup polls asking people whether they are better off than they were five years ago, 41 percent in 2008 said yes, the lowest rate since 1960, and 31 percent said no, the most negative the poll had ever seen. If Mr. Obama succeeds, the nation would embark on a new experiment, one which seeks to use the government to redistribute some of the wealth that has shifted disproportionately to the rich, and end some of the grave inequities that have developed over the last three decades. The vast majority of Americans would keep a little more of their paychecks, while the wealthiest would pay a little more to support many of the things that help them create their wealth: Roads, bridges, communications systems and scientific and technological research. To help pay for it, Mr. Obama would trim some of the corporate welfare now enjoyed by entities like banks and big agribusiness. Together with the stimulus bill, his budget would help more American families afford the cost of a college education that has threatened to grow out of their reach. This is not just a benefit for the poor and middle class. An educated work force is vital to creating wealth. So is a healthy one. The percentage of uninsured Americans has been rising in recent years, especially among people of working age, endangering one of the nation's most vital assets: its labor force. Many businesses, in an effort to shed costs and boost profits, have left it to workers to fend for themselves, or for government to pick up the slack. Mr. Obama justifiably seeks to draw on some of the vast wealth the labor force has helped create to keep it healthy. That is not a class issue. It is an national economic one, not to mention a moral one. To cast Mr. Obama's agenda as socialism in disguise distorts his progressive goals. And it fails to recognize, or admit, what can be achieved: A more equitable tax policy. A better educated, healthier work force. A stronger middle class, and more hope for the poor. Yes, this is liberalism, and Mr. Obama should make no bones about it. With 30 years of conservative economic policy bringing us to what many fear is the verge of a new depression, it is high time for a change. It's a new dawn in America. The issue: The President brings a liberal approach to his budget. The Stakes: Conservative policy got us here, and won't get us out. |
