03 Mar 12 - 10:32 AM (#3316619) Subject: RE: Folklore: St. Piran's Day Greetings From: Cats St Piran is the patron saint of tinners but also generally regarded as the original patron saint of Cornwall. Petroc was 6th century and was responsible for the building of the church in Bodmin and setting up the bishopric of Cornwall, hence havuing a later claim on the title. Anyway, It is Perrantide at the moment and this weeknd sees sessions and celebrations all over cornwall with a march through Truro on Monday followed by a session in the pub and sessions all over the Duchy. Beef, onions, potato and rutabaga, please. We served pasties and porter at our potluck wedding reception back in 1982. Cut our wedding cake with a 16th century main gauche. Pasties are rooted in my youth -- I was born in Stambaugh in Michigan's Upper Peninsula -- pretty much settled by the Cornish miners who came for the iron and copper. Linn |
03 Mar 12 - 01:01 PM (#3316696) Subject: RE: Folklore: St. Piran's Day Greetings From: Paul Burke THE PRAYER OF ST. PIRAN. Harr us, O Lord, and be debonair: for ours is a particular case. We are not like the men of St. Neot or the men of St. Udy, who are for ever importuning Thee upon the least occasion, praying at all hours and every day of the week. Thou knowest it is only with extreme cause that we bring ourselves to trouble Thee. Therefore regard our moderation in time past, and be instant to help us now. Amen.
