His CD - In from the cold is a masterpiece IMO. I just wanted to take the time to thank Pete for so many years of great music. There's something limiting about communicating on a computer screen with these little black squiggly characters we type out. Just as in music, it only occasionally happens when the warmth of a person comes through the screen or out through the apeakers. Miraculously, the person is there despite the inherent limitations of the medium. I've come to know Pete through the kitchen table thread, and I mean KNOW him. I admire his generosity of spirit and his modesty. Perhaps someday I'll get to hear him in person. Kudos to you Pete, and to you Dan for doing these threads. Jerry |

My one abiding memory from those days was him singing Battle of New Orleans unaccompanied, no big deal now, but a revelation to me then - you don't HAVE to play the guitar with a song, just 'cos you can. Up to then I only heard ballads sung unaccompanied. Thanks for that, Pete. (and the songs been in my repertoire ever since in a variety of arrangements.) |

They married in 1943 when they were both in the RAF, last year they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, he is 89 and mum 85. Do you remember the clock in the museum, I think it was at 4 oclock each day the 12 disciples process past Jesus, all of them bow to him except Judas who turns the other way!It was one of my favourite days out, the other was Crystal Palce park and the statues(huge) of the dinaseurs. He sang a sad song about a minstrel who had a broken string on his banjo. At the end of the session I introduced myself and asked Pete to play the song again for my recorder so I could go away and learn it, I haven't done so but the point I make is that he was only too willing to ablige. He was very friendly. Since that occasion we meet fairly regularly, he sings, I listen and we may even be ------------------sorry, someone at the door. |

If its of interest Ely was fantastic, Kevin Dempsey and Joe Broughton, do they come any better. Pete and I did play at the school we sat on the playing field with a group of pupils and Pete sang and entertained, they sang as one, I listened. It was wonderful. So, I'm getting to know Pete and if you would like too as well, buy his cd it is just great. Tomorrow we are being recorded by Suffolk Radio at the cafe or at least Pete probably is, I just listen. After 40 years Peter Twitchett is still a folk singers folk singer and long may it be so. Can I have cash this time Pete. B |

Havn't heard anything of you in yonks but I now live in Coventry. I remember well the weekend we came down for the weekend as you had asked Rip to do support for a concert in a huge marquee for the Scouts. The Ian Campbell folk group were headlining and then because you wouldn't let me play I decided I'd better sing so did my very first singing in public with Rip. ( Nothing like jumping in at the deep end. ) The next day we went to Southend for the day, went on the pier where you did a recording in a booth, can't remember if it was you and Rip together. The Wayland Community Radio has a regular folk programme, and I have appeared on that a couple of times. I was one of those who was involved in producing it, but I had forgotten I still had a few copies left. What was fascinating was not only the number of clubs there were in SE London in those days, but also the theme of the articles. Is folk music dying? Where have all the audiences gone? Have a complete set of the Penny Dreadfuls in the attic and they were used by an author called Chris Groom 10-15 years ago as reference for his book "Rock'in around Croydon" which looked at the live music scene in that "noble" town. It's good stuff, lots of fun, unpretentious, but a quality performance. It's the kind of music that I'd perform if I were English. Thanks a lot, Pete - I really enjoyed your CD! -Joe Offer- Here are the notes from the CD: This CD is a small snapshot of some of the songs that I enjoy singing. I have also included a couple of monologues. I have remained faithful to the musical influences that shaped my life. First and foremost was Mum, bless her, whose family enjoyed singing. She had uncles who trod the Music Halls and her father played the piano for the silent movies! Dad’s great uncle went over to America to make his fortune and brought back the American songs, an interest that remains alive. Mix that all together with a fine leaven of traditional English music and you have an idea of where I am musically! |

('choo) Essex Record Office have the privilege of a recording of a gig I did in Chelmsford a wee while ago now. (....and no the recording wasn't on a wax cylinder....)....(the very idea)...(LOL) It was a good evening as I recall.....interestingly I met up with a member of that audience a few weeks ago. We were already acquaintances but they hadn't made the connection with Chelmsford until I sang a particular song. At the end of the song he said, "I know who you are now!" Wonderful. The Thetford gig was connected to their Thomas Paine 200 festival, and I hear that Lewes is holding a festival as well. It was a shame for those people who had organised outside events, but we were indoors sharing some of the music we play on Wayland Community Radio's folk programme. There were great musicians to share the experience with and the 'stage' was very reminiscent of the rails of a ship and so a sea song or two seemed appropriate. After I had finishd my part of the concert a member if the audience came up to me and thanked me for singing a particular song. She used to sing it with her father when they were out sailing and she hadn't heard it for far too many years. My singing the song had made her day, and she had made mine. The magic of folk music! The floor singers were many and varied. Talented bunch too. Singing Robin, Les Elvin, John White, Brixton Bert Crys and Mike Rothon to name just a few. Good times! It's worth noting that the club is still going, and Crys and Mike are still heavily involved! |
