Where's Muppett ??

04 May 09 - 01:52 PM (#2624015)
Subject: Where's Muppett ??
From: Soldier boy

On another thread (Holmfirth Festival of Folk)a few of my folkie friends and myself have been asking "Where's Muppett?"

We have'nt seen him for quite a while now and were wondering if anyone else had seen him on their travels.
So I am sending out a 'search party' via Mudcat to track down this brilliant entertainer and friend and hopefully manage to get him to pop over to Holmfirth Festival of Folk next weekend [8/9/10 May].

I am sure that Muppett will be in fine fettle and that we should'nt worry unnecessarily because we have'nt see him for a while, but a lot of people love this guy and miss him.

I have been at lots of singarounds where Muppett has performed in his own unique and inimitable style and has nearly brought the house down with his zany song creations and monologues.
One of my favourites is the one that starts with "Day O, Day O, Daylight come and I want to go home..." (can't remember the song title - do you know?)

What are your favourite Muppett songs/monologues/renditions and where did you hear them?

And where is Muppett ?

Not when Muppett does it! Then its definitely 'Wild Rover'

Muppet found conjugating verbs with RagMopp confused over which is his rifle and which is his gun desperating seeking a soldier boy to show him the hymn so he can come home and say hello to kitty.

That's right Mrs Duck - of course it is! This just shows how addled I am getting and long term memory shot to pieces.
It's 'Wild Rover' sung to the tune of 'The Banana Boat Song'when Muppet does it.

How's Geoff (Mr Duck) and are you coming to Holmfirth next weekend?

GUEST, The Muffin Man, sorry but you have lost me! What do you mean?
Sounds like a cryptic clue in The Guardian Crossword!

Are you 'Muppett' using some kind of secret code to confuse the search party and throw it off its scent??

I saw Muppet a couple of months ago at a session in Bradford, he has been very ill but I believe he ran a singaround at Queensbury Music Festival in early March, so he seems to be a lot better.

Thanks folks. I am very sorry to hear that Muppett has been very ill Dave H, but it sounds like the old Muppett is now better and the occasional but patchy sightings suggest that he is coming back into circulation. Which is great news.

[Why is this starting to sound like a twitchers rare bird sighting by Bill Oddy?!!]

We all wish him a speedy and full recovery and a return to the folk scene in all his splendour.

By the way - is 'Muppett' spelt with one T or two T's at the end?

I can recall (but it's a bit hazy) finding a T shirt abroad which had 'Muppet' on the front and 'Muppets' Cocktail Bar' on the reverse which I bought as a present for Muppett, but when I gave it to him he declined it because he said it was the incorrect spelling and should have two T's at the end and seemed quite adamant about it!

I'm pretty sure that this is an accurate account but perhaps you know otherwise.

So far on this thread only Mrs Duck and Ray and GUEST has spelt it the same way as me -so what do you think?

I saw Muppett in all his glory the other week in the Dales at Dent, he was performing at and compering a fundraising concert in aid of this year's Dent beer & music festival. He did many of the songs he's known for, such as the reggie wild rover (along with the dance), the Ilkla Moor rap, Ghost chickens in the sky as well as one I've not seen him do, the Yorkshire version of country Road (clogged up road).

Spoke with him the next day when I bumped into him half way Whernside, with a massive pack on his back (with his shorts on). He now supports a beard which he started growing when he was in hospital back in January suffering very badly from Pneumonia. He's lost a fair bit of weight (wasn't on the big side to start with).

He mentioned that when he's not with his grand children he's spending a lot of time up in the dales but was going to come along to some of the festivals this year.

So lets hope he comes along to Holmefirth this weekend.

In the meantime go into youtube and tap in Dentdale show 2008 and you can see a snippet of him doing the reggie wild rover as well as some Irish songs.

Glad to hear of Muppett's restoration to good health. Mind you, I'm sure he would have had more resistance to ill-health had he continued to take the waters of Romney Marsh annually as he did in the 80's!

If anyone bumps into him give him my very best wishes from the tropical south.

Muppett was supping ale, eating up tworms and singing about his exploits on Ilkley Moor by Tat, without a hat or a cricket bat, or a mat or Postman Pat etc etc two week ago at the Abbey Inn in Leeds.

Looks like the Mudcat radar is working! Thanks folks.

Sightings of The lesser-spotted,short-panted,large-haired,ruck-sack-carrying,singing-and-dancing Muppett bird are now coming in at quite a pace!

I was very concerned to see posting by GUEST,Smithy about Muppett being in hospital in January suffering badly from pneumonia.
That goes a long way to explain why he dropped off the radar but thank goodness Smithys'and other postings have confirmed that he is now back in circulation and is playing an active role on the folk circuit.

Muppet, if you get to read this, I am concerned that you have lost weight - you were hardly a matchstick to begin with - and the beard!
Well, it could make you look like Ben Gunn!!

But however you turn up in appearance, it does'nt matter, we will all love you just the same. I look forward to seeing you soon mate.

Actually that Guest was me, Nick (cookie lost). And Muppett IS a West Indies supporter, if you'd heard the thing he does about Steve Harmison taking seven West Indies wickets for twelve runs you'd be in no doubt about it. Of course, he's a Yorkshire supporter as well.

I saw Muppett in The Elephant and Castle in Holmfirth last night and gave him a big hug from all of you.

Hurray - what was lost is found!

He's now back to good health and was on tremendous form as usual.

He now sports a bushy moustache and beard that looks a bit like raggytashs'splendid creation. I'm not sure it suits Muppet though!

He was a bit bemused at being a subject on Mudcat but asked me to thank all the people who have made comments and expressed concern at his 'absence'.
He knows that he has lots of friends and genuinely appreciates and feels humbled at the amount of love and affection that so many people have for him and have shown to him.

We do love you Muppet - for being....well......Muppett!!

Welcome back mate, you're a star.

Hiya Raggytash thanks for coming t' me defence but I thought you knew about my cricketing prefrances, When it comes t' West Indies, there's no other team to support, even though they're going through a lean time at the mo, To paraphrase a certain former Hollywood Actor 'They'll be Back'.

By eck I was even known to travel over t' your former part of the world (Lancashire) to catch The mighty Clive Lloyd plying his trade.

Any way cheers to everyone for your concerns, I feel very humbled by it all.

Cheers and appen I'll see a few more of you out about over the coming year, best get back t' work now.

Ey up Muppett lad.

It's very good to see that you are conversing with us all once again - we really did miss you when you were recuperating from pneumonia, and I was really chuffed to see you in Holmfirth.

Can you please solve previous debates about if Muppett is spelt with one t or two ts'. I seem to remember that you told me off when I showed you an item with only one t on it. So what is it to be?

Also, this "Where's Muppett??" thread is now an ideal opportunity for you to let us know (now you are back in circulation) where you will next make an appearance - so please do use this space to let us know exactly that - so no more search parties are required !!

God bless.
