I changed to Firefox and every thing was then fine. Recently whenever I close fown my computer or put it onto standby I lose my Mudcat cookie. I don't think that any of my settings on security have been changed. Can any one help so that I don't have to log on every time? |

IE, in later versions, will usually ask for permission to accept a cookie, unless the site is "obviously safe according to your security settings. The alternative is to accept a "this visit only" temporary cookie that is supposed to disappear when you leave the site. If there is no "Certificate," usually only a "temporary cookie" is accepted, and the cookie will be deleted (or will expire) before you get back to the site. In IE, at Tools|Internet Options, on the Privacy Tab, the button labelled "Sites" will let you type "mudcat.org" in a box and click Accept, and forever after IE will accept a permanent cookie that will only crumble under the most unlikely and bizarre circumstances. (Bizarre has the meaning "something went wrong" among others.) Other browsers almost certainly have similar settings where you can give permission to accept and keep a cookie. Usually, once a site is entered as "trusted" as above, even the Adware removers will leave a permanent cookie from the site. If you go into IE Tools or in "Disk Cleanup" and click "delete cookies" it may delete all of them, although newest versions seem to ignore the "trusted ones." You can also change the general "Security Level" to permit more cookies generally, but that's not recommended because, surprising as it may seem, not every place on the internet is populated entirely by friendly and considerate persons. Security updates in IE, and probably in other browsers, have "redifined" the criteria for what to accept, so that even if your "Security Level" is at the same setting as previously (Medium-High is recommended for IE) the browser may be more selective about what gets in, and cookies once accepted might start being rejected, unless you tell the browser to trust the site. John lovely clear technical detail, thanks. I already have mudcat cookie allowed in my internet options and it is still getting kicked out. It is down already as a trusted site. Don't know what to do now, except perservere with logging on each time. Thanks guys. |

Browsers and Internet security programs have changed recently, making it harder to retain cookies. Unfortunately, there's no one way to set your computer to retain a specific cookie. Every browser is different, and browsers are being updated continually. If you are tenacious, you CAN keep your Mudcookie intact - most of the time. Go to tools/options on your browser, and set Mudcat as a trusted site and set your browser to always accept cookies from mudcat.org Remember that people get nervous and suspicious when you post as a Guest, so please do your best to make sure you use the same name on every post - even you, Gargoyle.... -Joe Offer- |

Look in File|Import Export and the wizard lets you chose what to copy. Use Export to save them someplace, and Import to bring them back. Experience is that it doesn't really work very well. Some cookies include an expiration date, and will cease to function after a while. Most cookies get refreshed at each visit to a site, so nearly all of them are likely to "crumble" and not work well after a short time. this is the most likely reason why imported cookies aren't too reliable. If you import cookies on another machine, especially if you "borrow" another user's logon, there's no easy way to separate yours from theirs, so the possibility exists that you could let someone else who uses the machine "be you" at a site where you wouldn't want that to happen. A better solution is to get one of those "automatic login" utilities where you can enter your login information, the info is stored in encrypted form, and the program will automatically perform the login whenever you go to a site where it knows how to do it. One drawback to this is that it might allow someone to log in to your bank account if you leave your computer running while you run off to some necessary task. Another is that some sites "share their logins" so that once you log in at one site that "identity" lets you use another site from the same "group" without a separate login. If mudcat is in your "trusted sites" list and your cookie still disappears, it's likely that you're not operating in the appropriate "zone" or that the meaning attached to a security level after a security update isn't the same as it was when the cookies worked. In IE terms, you'd expect to be in "Internet Zone" (Tools|Internet Options|Security tab) when at mudcat; and a security setting (with current updates) of "Medium" (Tools|InternetOptions|Privacy tab) should allow keeping trusted cookies. The "Medium" security setting in IE does have a couple of "increments," so even within that range you might have to tweak it up or down a click. If you've run disk cleanup, after the utility checks for stuff you can delete it allows you to put check marks beside the things you want deleted. If you've clicked to delete cookies, it may delete all of them. It also may "remember" that you clicked that choice the last time so it will continue to delete them all until you uncheck it. Usually, even with "delete cookies" checked, cleanup will not delete a "permanent cookie" from a trusted site. But if your zone/security settings have forced your mudcat cookie to be saved as a "temporary cookie" or one with an expiration date then the cookie likely will get wiped. John |
