The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session will commence at 3:30 PM on 16 May, and conclude at 7:30 PM.

Anyone needing more details should inquire here - Tom

Things are looking very busy this weekend but hopefully I can make it. It would be the better part of the weekend!

Conflicts abound, but I'll try to stop in during the later part of the session.

No word from the Gloucester gang, are they still afloat?

I'm planning to be there and should have company in the van.

We certainly had a great time. I'm not sure how many people attended since several who were there early had to leave and several others showed up later. There were usually six of us leading songs. In no particular order: Tom and Linn, Dave, Emery, Chris, Jeri, JudyB, Bruce, Peter, Jeff, and Barbara. There's another fella whose name I'm not remembering.

The songs I led included:

Bully in the Alley
Mobile Bay (C. Fox Smith)
Bowling
Ballad of John Silver (Masefield)
Kewannee County (Craig Johnson)
Yangste River Shanty (Hamish Maclaren)

JudyB led:

Roll the Old Chariot
Common British Tars (Ron Baxter "Sailor Ron")

Sorry we missed it. Life has been a bit chaotic in the Portland area.

That would be Marty Stock, Charlie. Pete Hale arrived (to the joy of his parents -- and us), better late than never.

I'm late for work -- I'll try to remember (and post) when I get home what I sang.

The joy was all mine, both for the sing and my parents' attendance.

As I recall I did:
Wild Goose Nation (trad.)
Martin Greigh (T. Whiteside)
Barrett's Privateers (S. Rogers)
Van Dieman's Land (U2)

The last one isn't trad, I know, but I was inspired to do it because a couple of songs on the subject had just been sung. Jeff started with a ballad that I think is called "William Jones", and then Tom did the traditional ballad "Van Dieman's Land" … and I didn't want to do "Back Home in Derry" again.

Hope to see the missing folks again soon.

Emery led "Cairo Town" but I couldn't get him to lead "Wet Indies Blues."

Peter, would that've been the ballad "Jim Jones"? Transported to Botany Bay "And they'll yet regret the sent Jim Jones in chains to Botany Bay".

Sorry to have missed the session but this was my daughter's graduation weekend & we had a ball. Could you all do a repete of this, this fri nite?

What DID I sing?!?

Let's see -- "Three Score and Ten", "Down Below", "Bay of Biscay" (with Jeri singing harmony) and "Ten Stone" with Jeri and I trading verses. Can't remember if I sang anything else. But I recorded the session both on tape and (yeehah!) digitally.

And "Race of Long Ago," I think -- or was that at Friday night's session? I know I sang "Harbors of Home" Friday.

Linn-

You sang "Race of Long Ago" following the other C. Fox Smith poem "Mobile Bay" that I led.

And Tom followed up "Jim Jones" with another convict transportation song. And Bruce led "Roll Down" by Peter Bellamy.

Charley Noble
