BS: Blockbuster! New Dachshund film!

It's called "DOGZILLA" and it's about a mutant Dachshund who takes on the entire US military and Blackwater in an epic battle on the streets of Schenectady.

The scene where he lifts his leg and pees on the roof of Schenectady City Hall is unforgettable!

The marketing slogan of the film is:

"Tallness Doesn't Matter"

There's a musical currently in progress about the destruction of our Gracious Queen by a mutant dog.

Working title
Corgi and Bess

I thought it was going to be called "Lizzie and the Labrador" or perhaps "The Prince and the Poodle."

If the wiener dog who lives down the street don't stay out of my herb garden, there is going to be a block buster this weekend.

Wanna come?

                      Those of us who have dealt with wiener dogs on a personal basis have come to understand they pretty much do what they want to do. At the end of the day, I think you'll find out that their presence will always turn out to be a good thing.

Though perhaps not that specification of muck.

He would have to consume about 15 Tim Horton's franchises. Orillia has more Tim Horton's donut shops per acre than any other place in the world. You have to see it to believe it.

I used to love Tim Horton's...until they drove all the other donut shops out of business and took over the town. My love began to fade. I dislike monopolies. The magic just ain't there any more. Their donuts are best described as "anemic". I just wish I could get to eat a REAL donut like the ones I remember from about 40 or 50 years ago when people still made donuts at home in their own kitchens.

This is a copycat recipe for the Chocolate Cake Doughnuts served by a Certain Chain in Canada and Northern US. This includes a Mocha glaze but you can top it with anything you wish - try the chocolate glaze from the Boston Creme Doughnut recipe. Recipe does not include chilling time.

16 doughnuts (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Doughnuts

    * 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    * 1 cup unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa powder
    * 2 teaspoons baking powder
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 4 large eggs
    * 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    * 1/3 cup buttermilk
    * 3 tablespoons butter, melted
    * vegetable oil (for frying, 6-8 cups)

Mocha Glaze

    * 6 ounces chopped semisweet chocolate
    * 1/2 cup whipping cream
    * 1 tablespoon butter
    * 2 teaspoons corn syrup
    * 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder

Directions

   1. In a bowl, mix flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. In a small bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, buttermilk, and melted butter to blend. Stir into dry ingredients until well blended. Chill until cold, at least 1 hour or up to 3 hours.
   2. Scrape dough onto a generously floured surface. With floured hands, pat dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. With a 3-inch doughnut cutter, cut out doughnuts. Pat together scraps of dough and cut again. (Alternately, shape dough into ropes about 5 inches long and 1/2 inch thick; join rope ends to form doughnuts.) Place doughnuts on a well-floured baking sheet.
   3. Meanwhile, fill an electric deep-fryer to the fill line or pour about 4 inches of oil into a 5- to 6-quart pan; heat to 375°F Place one doughnut at a time onto a wide spatula and gently slide into oil, frying up to three at a time. Cook, turning once, until puffy and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes total (to check timing, cut first one to test). With a slotted spoon, transfer doughnuts to paper towels to drain. Repeat to fry remaining doughnuts.
   4. When cool enough to handle, dip the top half of each doughnut in warm mocha glaze and place on a plate. Let stand until glaze is set, about 5 minutes.
   5. Mocha Glaze - In a heatproof bowl, combine 6 ounces chopped semisweet chocolate, 1/2 cup whipping cream, 1 tablespoon butter, 2 teaspoons corn syrup, and 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder. Bring a few inches of water to a boil in a pan; remove from heat. Place bowl over water and let stand, stirring occasionally, until smooth, about 10 minutes.

Canadian food is pretty much always better than food in the US. Canadian consumers expect and demand better, and they get it. In the US that definitely is not the case. It's all about the bottom line here, and screw the consumers.

The triumph of so-called "free market" philosophy, eh, Carol?

When Benedict Arnold changed sides he told the British that the smartest thing they could do if they wanted to beat the American revolutionaries was to offer free land and money to anyone who would join the Loyalist cause (almost half the population were Loyalists already). He told them that money would be a far more effective weapon in quelling the revolution than military force. I expect he was right. The British, however, were short of money at the time because they were tied down in some major wars in Europe, so they never really followed through on Arnold's excellent advice, though they made some limited efforts in that direction (and those were quite successful).

It was a very near thing. Either side could have won that war.

We've never had a "free market" approach in this country, all of our rhetoric about it notwithstanding. It has always been a very controlled market with lots of taxpayer money going to the corporate fat cats at the expense of the taxpayers, and corporate lobbyists calling all of the shots. That's why our food is so crappy.

JtS' father, step mother, and uncle came to visit us recently. They brought some food with them. I was reading the ingredient lists on the packages, and the ingredients in the Canadian food was mostly food, and the ingredient lists were fairly short. Comparable food products in the US had ingredient lists that were four to five times as long and the ingredients listed were mostly chemicals. Naturally, the Canadian food tasted a lot better.

Having said all of that, if the Tim's doughnuts don't taste as good as they used to, it could be because Tim's is now US owned. They do use corn syrup in their products now, even in Canada, and corn syrup will cause a doughnut to taste "anemic". Watch out... looks like the US is starting to f*ck with Canadian food.

Didn't I read somewhere that corn syrup is a likely contributer to obesity and diabetes? Something like that.

Well, corn syrup is sugar based. High fructose corn syrup is even higher in sugar (fructose, in this case). ALL sugars -- lactose, fructose, dextrose, sucrose, and for all I know redrose -- are converted in the body and used for energy. If you don't need the energy it's stored as fat. (This, I admit, is a very simple explanation of a very complex process.)

This is all okay if you burn the calories. Sit around watching television while eating salted potato chips dipped in honey while drinking beer might possibly perhaps maybe cause you to gain just a wee bit of weight, not to mention whacking a wee bit off your life span.

By the way, this is easily observed in dachshunds. Being smaller they are excellent subjects for obesity studies. Even reputable scientists have found that dachshunds that never run around but instead sit on their rumps and watch television while swilling beer and nachos while playing the banjo or accordion end up with MASSIVE physical problems.

Too true! I have seen a series of Dachshunds succumb to the couch potatoe lifestyle of the beer and pretzels set...and all of them ended up with MASSIVE physical problems that proved fatal. The present one is now so fat and lazy that he can barely move. The only thing that still works well is his YAP!

Right, LH. The downside being that in all beings it isn't lifestyle that's fatal, it's life itself. The Reaper gets everyone.

Aaaah! Not ME! Not Meeee.....

Seriously, If sausage-dogs are active, they wreck their backbones, and if (when?) they aren't, they're just a lump on the sofa that you pour food and veterinary invoices into.

Rap, if you hear of one of those banjo/accordion playing dogs for sale....

No one who has one ever admits to it, much less sells it. These people have far too much concern for humanity to do such a thing.

Well, I've seen sausage dogs who were active and who remained healthy and hearty for about 98% of a lengthy lifespan, and I think that's good enough, Gurney. Most humans don't do that well.

Yes, their backs are vulnerable. However, we had one called "Valdy" and his back never failed him. He died finally at age 16, and his back was still fine, but his hind legs were getting pretty shaky.

I'm afraid, though, that you're quite right about the "lunp on a sofa" ones.
