Origins: Upon The Alpine Pasture

Does anyone know anything about this song? I learned it when I was a Girl Scout in the 1950s to early 60s. I couldn't find any reference to it on the Internet. I finally made my own midi file of the melody. Part of my memory says the chorus might be, "Hi da lena" rather than "Hi da le dum".

UPON THE ALPINE PASTURE
(Hi Diddle Dum Dum)

Upon the alpine pasture
Stands a nice brown
Hi diddle dum dum
On the alpine pasture
Stands a nice brown cow.

Chorus:
Hi da le dum, hi da le dum
Hi da le dum, bim bam bo!
Hi da le dum, hi da le dum
Hi da, bim bam bo!

Maid she would not milk her,
Cause she was so
Hi diddle dum dum
Maid she would not milk her
Cause she was so tired.

(Chorus)

Mother, I'd go dancing,
But I have no
Hi diddle dum dum
Mother, I'd go dancing,
But I have no shoes.

(Chorus)

Wear your father's slippers,
Dance the whole night
Hi diddle dum dum
Wear your father's slippers,
Dance the whole night long.

(Chorus)

Father will not lend them,
Says I am a
Hi diddle dum dum
Father will not lend them,
Says I am a cow.

(Chorus)

Hmmm. Searching, the closed I get is "Auf der Alm da gibt'd koa Sünd." Tune here (click).

There's also an Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss, that includes a part called Auf der Alm (On the Alpine Pasture).

I'm thinking it's a translation of a German-language song. I didn't find any reference in our index of Cooperative Recreation Service songbooks, scout songboooks, or school songbooks.

Alicia, if you'd like, e-mail the MIDI to me so I can post it. That may help somebody identify it.

I googled "I am a cow" (in German), and this (click) is the best I could find.

Wolfgang! Suzanne! Can you help?

This is not it but...What fun scavenger hunts...peaceful, remarkable cows.

Alpine meadows are also French.

Le Ranz des Vaches

The cowherds of the Alps
At an early hour arose,
Ha, ah! Ha, ah!
Liauba! Liauba!
In order to milk.

Come all of you,
Black and white,
Red and dappled,
Old and young;
Under this oak
I will milk you;
Under this poplar
Let me press you.
Liauba! Liauba!
In order to milk

Lots of folk-loric history wrapped up in "Le Ranz des Vaches." Its tune (of which there are a dozen) is said to make grown bankers cry and risks soldiers to home-sickness.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

e-mail your midi to Joe - it would be nice to hear it while reading the words.

Sorry for the delay, I got involved in another project.

I found some recordings for "Le Ranz des Vaches", but none sounds even remotely like this song, which is light and lilting. The melody for "Auf der Alm da gibt'd koa Sünd" is also nothing like it.

Of course, I do realize that songs evolve with lives of their own. So I sent my midi to Joe tonight. It repeats the melody so you can sing all the verses along with it--for my nieces and nephews. Maybe some former Girl Scout from the east coast will recognize it.
