04 Jun 09 - 10:24 AM (#2648182) Subject: Obit: David Carradine 6/4/09 From: Wesley S MSNBC Story Breaking news updated 10:07 a.m. ET June 4, 2009 Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He says Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family. The Web site of the newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room and is believed to have committed suicide. Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith. |

04 Jun 09 - 10:56 AM (#2648208) Subject: RE: Obit: David Carradine, actor - June 2009 From: Stilly River Sage Bound For Glory was the film. New York Times arts page article. David Carradine, the star of the 1970s television series "Kung Fu" and the title villain of the "Kill Bill" movies has died in Thailand, The Associated Press reported. The United States Embassy in Bangkok told The A.P. that Mr. Carradine had been found dead in his hotel suite in Bangkok, where he was working on a movie. He was 72. Mr. Carradine was part of an acting family that included his father, John; his brother, Bruce, and half-brothers Keith and Robert; and his nieces Ever Carradine and Martha Plimpton. After a short run as the title character in the 1966 television adaptation of the Western "Shane," he found fame in the 1972 series "Kung Fu" as Kwai Chang Caine, a wanderer raised by Shaolin monks to be a martial arts master. He enjoyed a career resurgence in recent years when he was cast by Quentin Tarantino in the action movies "Kill Bill: Vol. 1″ and "Vol. 2." |

04 Jun 09 - 11:27 AM (#2648247) Subject: RE: Obit: David Carradine 3 or 4 June 2009 From: Wesley S My understanding is that the "Kung-Fu" TV series was developed for Bruce Lee. But the network honchos decided that America wasn't ready for a TV series staring an oriental. So a few changes were made and Carradine ended up as the star. And I'm glad that they made a movie about Woody Guthrie but it grated on my nerves that they allowed Carradine to play a Mossman guitar in the movie. It's a great guitar but they weren't used widely until well after Woody stopped performing. A little point but sometimes we guitar players are bothered by things like that. |

04 Jun 09 - 04:39 PM (#2648506) Subject: RE: Obit: David Carradine 3 or 4 June 2009 From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego I remember David's father, John Carradine, from movies like "Stagecoach," which kick-started John Wayne's career and "The Grapes of Wrath." In the latter, there is a sort of emotional "six degrees" connection to Woodie Guthrie and those for whom he sang. John Carradine had one of those unforgettable stentorian voices that often reeked of ham when he played preachers, shady characters or wayward frontier thespians. David was once married to Barbara Hershey, who was also known for a time as "Barbara Seagull." They were both flower children for a while and seemed to drift in and out of alternative lifestyles. He had seemed to have taken his craft much more seriously in later years. He also seemed to have evolved a sort of self-deprecating sense of humor, which makes it seem all the more odd that his life should have ended as it did. Perhaps an undisclosed illness underlies it. We may never know. Condolences to his family. |
