10 Jun 09 - 09:50 PM (#2653671) Subject: RE: BS: Chrysler's new mantra! From: Q (Frank Staplin) Fiat will start with a 20% stake, which will grow to 35% when certain targets are met. The health care unit of The United Auto Workers will own 55% and the Canadian and U. S. governments about 10 per cent. [There could be a problem over who makes the policies, the Union or Fiat executives]. That last sentence is mine, not part of the article. Before the price of gas went skyward, 3/4 of Chrysler sales were pick-up trucks and SUVs. The small vehicle market will be highly competitive. [If gasoline remains reasonable, SUVs such as the Jeep Cherokee will remain big sellers]. Chrysler failed to compete in the passenger car market. 11 Jun 09 - 05:08 PM (#2654308) Subject: RE: BS: Chrysler's new mantra! From: Q (Frank Staplin) For real 'tinny', think Fiat. Back when they were permitted in Canada, a friend who had one got hit from behind and accordioned into the vehicle ahead. He suffered severe damage to his legs as the Fiat collapsed. His next vehicle was a pick-up. Current Fiats would not meet crashworthyness tests in U. S. or Canada. |

From: Richard Bridge The Fiat 124 coupes of all series were cracking vehicles - the 1438cc A series, the 1608cc B series and the 1592cc and 1792 cc C series were all little rockets (for their time), as were the equivalent Special T saloon variants (basically the same bodyshell later sold to LADA). But they did rust a bit! |

From: Riginslinger When they first started putting this deal together, I thought the "secured creditors" were big banks and bloated buffoons. It turns out they are other pension funds from other unions and/or investment groups. At the end of the day, it looks like the United Auto Workers simply ripped off their fellow workers. |

From: Q (Frank Staplin) Don't know what Rigslinger in on about, but union pension funds have been big players for some time in investment. The Ontario Teachers Union held 108 billion in assets at the end of 2007. They own much prime real estate in NYC and elsewhere in the U. S. and Canada, as well as sizeable chunks of several corporations and they are by no means the largest. They were going to take over Bell Canada, but I don't remember how that came out.
