I knew a girl, a really nice girl
Down near Wroxham way.
She was wholly nice to me back in the old schooldays
She would smile, all the while, but daddy didn't know all.
What she used to say to me behind the garden wall,
Ha' ye go' a loight boy? Ha ye go' a loight?

Molly Wimley, she smoke like a chimley
But she's my little nicotine gel.

Lyrics to HEV YEW GOTTA LOIGHT, BOY? [HAVE YOU GOT A LIGHT, BOY?] by Allan Smethurst, have been posted twice at Mudcat, here and here.

I haven't been able to identify a song called ARE YOU ALRIGHT BOY. Various lists of songs by Allan Smethurst don't include it. Are we sure it exists? Are we sure we have the right title? Are we sure it's by Smethurst? Can anyone supply any more information about it, or quotes from it?

Here's my attempt at a transcription of the YouTube recording. I figure it would be ridiculous for me to try to represent the dialect with spelling, so I stuck pretty close to standard spelling. My spelling of the title comes from the video, but I have no confidence in it.

ARE YEW ALROIGHT, BOY?
As recorded by Allan Smethurst, "The Singing Postman"

Now I'm a Norfolk man; a Shannock* do I be.
I am from the ... side of Sheringham by the sea.
Now if I want to go there, if only for a day,
No sooner do they see me, they turn around and say:
"Are you alright, boy? Are you alright?"

Now when I was a schoolboy, 'course, that was long ago,
Nothing could they teach me, and nothing did I know,
And then one day I told the teacher, "Two and two is four."
He looked me in the eye and he said, "Oh, my Lor'!
Are you alright, boy? Are you alright?"

I own the Shannock; I am a Shannock, and I'll always be that way.

One day I do recall, the snow was on the ground.
I took my sled to Beacon Hill to do some sliding down.
New when I broke my glasses, I could not see a thing,
And when I left the cliff behind, I heard the boys all sing:
"Are you alright, boy? Are you alright?"

I'm always thinking of a seaside town and I'm wishing I was there.

Well then I went a-fishing, and on the herring grounds,
There … an old nor'easter, and the old … went down,
And when they called a lifeboat, she come along next day,
And when she come to pick me up, I heard the coxswain say,
"Are you alright, boy? Are you alright?"

I was a Shannock; I am a Shannock; and I'll always be that way.

Now listen all you Norfolk boys; I reckon you know me.
I know all you Shannock boys from Sheringham by the sea.
Now if I want to go there, if only for a day,
I hope that when you see me, you'll turn around and say:
"Are you alright, boy?"

[* According to Wikipedia, the nickname of the Sheringham Football Club is the Shannocks.]

Minor corrections to Jim Dixon's lyrics

Now I'm a Norfolk man; a Shannock* do I be.
I am from the proper side of Sheringham by the sea.
