2020 Obit: Steve Thomason

Scroll down for Obituary remarks

Steve and Theresa's housemove went through all of a sudden and he didn't get a chance to say goodbye to a lot of us or us to him.

Leicester's loss is Exeter's gain -if you've not heard him before down there, you're in for a real treat.

I know he logs into the Cat occasionally so here's to a very happy, unstressful and musical retirement!

Steve - if you read this - there'd always be a bed for you and Theresa to stay if you wanted to come up and visit us in North Devon. (Joiners Arms, Bideford, every Thursday)

Devon is a wonderful place to live - I hope you enjoy it (and your retirement) as much as I do.

(By the way, Bideford has got GU4 coming to the festival 10 - 16 August. Chance to meet up, maybe)

Sue

Keith and I only found out about Steve and Theresa's move on Friday. We were at the Traditional Folk Club in Exeter when they walked in. We thought that they were there on holiday, but we were wrong.

We are really sad to lose them from the Midlands, but our loss is Devon's gain. Great, and much under valued, singer/songwriter.

Sylvia

I hope to see you in the Anchor in August then! And at the Wail, since you won't have to worry about getting back to work....

With a bit of luck the wonderful Steve Thomason will be singing at a Folk Night we are running at the Golden Shield in Fleckney Leicestershire on the 30th of this month.
This will probably be the last chance to see him in our neck of the woods for a long time.
A truly outstanding singer with a prodigous repertoire, even if he did fool me by passing off a song as a Child Ballad.
He and Theresa will be sadly missed from Second Saturdays
Best wishes
Nic, Jacky and Vic

Steve is the very first guest to feature at a new venture starting up at Hanlon's Brewery, Half Moon, Exeter EX5 5AE. This is to be a platform performance venue for floor singers with a guest ('Hanlon's Half Hour) in each half. There will also be a guest MC. The session will be seasonal; 9 June, 8 September and 8 December 2015. £5 on the door to include a pint of brewery beer, a pasty and some great singing! This first, summer, session to feature Steve, Flash Jack with MC Alan Rosevear. Good luck all!

I'm sad to tell everyone who knew him that Steve has died in the last few days.
We were informed by e-mail by Theresa, his wife and we share a profound sadness at the passing of a talented singer of the tradition and a song writer of such integrity.

Tragic news, for Steve was without doubt one of the region's finest singers, and a very talented "song maker-upper" too (a true "bard and storyteller") though modest to the n-th degree!!! He will indeed be much missed. RIP Steve, and condolences to Teresa.

Steve unfortunately, as far as I know, left few recordings, but many of his songs are now sung by other singers which will keep his memory alive if not that many his own fine performances.

He always by choice kept a low profile but could well have been a major performer on the circuit had he wished it I'm sure.

Several of his songs are included in the Grand Union carols collection sung every Christmas,

Very sad news. I remember Steve at the Pack Horse Folk Club in Loughborough years ago. He was a fine singer and a wonderful songwriter. There are quite a number of his songs on Soundcloud.

Sad news indeed about Steve Thomason... as Tom Patterson says above, he used to play regularly at the Pack Horse club some years ago where I had the great pleasure to hear him sing many times. The last time I saw him was at the funeral of a mutual friend a couple of years back - a valedictory occasion indeed. My condolences to Theresa. Steve will be remembered with great fondness around here and beyond...

I only ever heard him sing in the Sidmouth Folk Week Middle Bar, but always loved his songs which painted such wonderful pictures. RIP Steve.

I would like to echo the thoughts of Tom Patterson and Rod Warner above. Steve was a wonderful performer and songwriter and enlivened many a night at the Packhorse club.

I was sorry to hear of Steve's passing. He was a well-loved performer. Check out his soundcloud recordings. They are well worth a listen. My condolences go to all those who know and love him. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. RIP Steve.

Steve would occasionally post to Mudcat as guest Steve T. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing and send deepest sympathies to Theresa, James, family and friends. Steve was great company and a lovely singer who wrote very singable songs, and he will be much missed by those of us who were lucky enough to meet and hear him.
