Reel-to-reel tape recorders

Subject: Reel-to-reel tape recorders

I'm sure I've asked this in the past, but what information I got disappeared in a lightning strike.
Does anybody know of a service engineer able to work on good quality tape recorders: Revox, Akai, Sony, Uher, Ferrograph?
Republic of Ireland would be fantastic, the North, very acceptible, UK manageable.
Any help would be extremely gratefully received.
Thanks in anticipation.

I asked Harry Bradshaw recently if he could advise me same the thing for a valve record player - I hope he can come up with something.

Thanks Bob,
The cost and problems of shipping would be horrendous - unless you can persuade him/her to take a holiday in the west of Ireland complete with toolbox.
Thanks anyway

It's been my experience that these people are very hard to find. Good luck ... bob

Bob/Deckman- Who is it? I'm looking for a preamp or two and a pinchroller for my 814 year old Teac 3340.
Carter Bannerman on Bainbridge Island, presumably MUCH closer to your tapedeck guy than those big islands to the east!

Panic Music in Cambridge did some work on the old College machines a couple of years ago- before we sold them!
The little German gentleman who used to be the fount of all knowledge locally has sadly retired.
You might try asking on the Sound on Sound forum. There are some very well informed aficionados of analogue there.
Cheers

Jim,
Have a look here :- http://www.revox.freeuk.com/index.html.
I had one of my two Revox A77s serviced a couple of years ago and was very satisfied.
A bit pricy though.

Jim,

Another place to look is http://www.taperecorder.co.uk/

Nigel is based, inconveniently for you, in Ipswich but is in touch with the tape recorder world and will possibly be able to connect you with a colleague.

The man I know ONLY works with "reVox" machines. If you'll PM me, I'll give you the information. Again ... he ONLY works with "reVox." Bob(deckman)Nelson

I have an Akai from 1980. Damned thing weighs about 70 pounds.

Probably not of use to anyone who has posted here yet, but for future reference, I've seen reel-to-reels at the repair center in MetroGnome Music, here in Tucson. Checking on the web, I find the Stereo Hospital, in MetroGnome Music

Another vote for Panic Music.
They are very good - give them a call, and if they can't help you directly they might know someone who can.

Also I was going to recommend Adrian Tuddenham who has a reputation for dealing with vintage audio gear - and found THIS which lists him and many other services - must be worth a look. I think he's a bit of a folkie too, so might be quite interested.

For Adrian Tuddenham, go to
http://www.poppyrecords.co.uk

but instead of them new-fangled tape machines look at his wax cylinder service !!

Adrian invited a lady to accompany him to the Old Swan Band dance in Bath last February - by recording his invitation on a wax cylinder and sending it to her.

And she found a way to play it and accepted the invitation.

There's old fashioned class!

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Will chase them all up - had a couple of surprising responses so far.
