Is Folk Music Sexy?

05 Jul 09 - 10:38 AM (#2672016)
Subject: Is Folk Music Sexy?
From: Lizzie Cornish 1

So, I'm dancin' to this at the moment..

Hot, baby, HOT!

...and I'm thinking of all the times I've been told off for daring to bring sex into discussion of folk music and musicians.

WHY is it that this music, folk that is, some of which is insanely sexy has to be spoken of in hushed tones, with English folks preferring to prostate themselves in front of the Folk Altar, rather than lie down on it...and.....

I'm just wonderin'...and feeling a little mischievious, you know, how you do sometimes...

Anyway, I think that some of it IS sexy, and it should be celebrated for that fact...and if some folks swoon now and then over er..some folks, well it only adds to the sheer joy and the heat.

Don't get too steamed up dancing to Ricky though, because that lassie in his song may make more than a few Boysies keel over with a smile on their face.

Viva La Club de Sexy Folk!

Arran jumpers, beards, campsite toilets, midges, 113 verse songs, freezing upstairs pub rooms, beer bellies, star of the county down/wild rover/anachie gordon at break neck speed, singing from song books, singers that can't, guitar players that don't know when to stop playing/twideling/plonking, talking over performemers, full pa in a wc sized room...........

we do seem to like either singing about sex or murder, if we can combine the two so much the better.
i think we should follow their example on the sex front, but back in the olden days you didn't have to worry about being interupted by dog walkers and ramblers!!!
or school trips! wow that would be embarasing.

quite a few non folkie friends get ratherembarrased when you talk about sex or listen to songs about it, even    rory mcloeds when mummy and daddy made me, made our parents squirm even though it is beautiful and very loving.

what is there to be embarrased about? except if you are silly enough to be noisy at festivals!!!!

take care all
if in doubt out a sock in it!! LOL

English folk song rarely seems to rollick in the sex, so to speak. Rather it mostly sniggers at it (as in "the Threshing Machine").

Thompson's "Lass at the hiring fair" is I think quite erotic.

But the medal I think needs to go to a tune title "The lass is pissing brandy".

Oh heck, yes! I've seen Kathryn sing that song too, jade...I know exactly what you mean. She sings it superbly and her dancing is just sooooooooooo...

Can't find her singing that, which is probably just as well as it would only cause a few of the fellas to end up in Accident and Emergency....but I found her singing this, accompanied by Sean Lakeman, of course.

'Whitby Maid'

I've always said that Kathryn is one of the most underrated voices and talents in English folk.

Hey, now here's a pretty darn sexy video...

Cara, Kathryn, Sean, Seth, Sam - Equation - He Loves Me

Oh, that they'd get back together again. They'd be a real folk supergroup these days and would sell out all over.

I posted the following on the Bears Mailing List in 1996:

A Woof for NEFFA

I spent a day recently at the New England Folk Festival, an annual
weekend extravaganza at a suburban highschool that attracts a couple
of thousand people of all ages & sexes, mostly for dancing & singing.
Perhaps a majority of the men are bearded, and a striking number are
bears with comforting bellies & plentiful hair, some with
heartbreaking faces & voices. I did not try to find out how many were
queer, but as a spectacle such a gathering, IMO, merits attention from
arctophiles. I see no reason to suppose that the concentration of
bears in organized folkiedom is peculiar to New England.

Well, sometimes the music is very romantic, which puts me in mind of sexy. Sometimes the tunes or music are truly erotic, and then the voices/players/personalities are, and sometimes the setting is, with wine and stars and firelight, and when you put 'em together, oh my it can be intoxicating.

Then there are times when the music, players and setting are NOT sexy at all. I guess it just depends, as it always does.

The general rule of thumb with folk songs is that if the words don't make sense the song is about sex and if they do it's about someone dying:-)

I must say though that the Oysters, good as they are, do not turn me on in that sense. Ricky Martin does even less. I would say that Kathryn Tickell or Alison Goldfrapp do it for me but if I did I would probably be accused of being sexist, shallow, a potential rapist or all three.

It is fine for the ladies to make comments about how sexy men are of course. Especialy if the comments are about me...

just be careful if you are in a very unstable or springy van!!!

true there is a difference between sexy and singing about sex, but it does depend on who is singing.

Do people have sex listening to folk music? Or feel inspired to have sex while listening to folk music?
I do like Gently Johnny for the seduction/unveiling I must admit, but otherwise the so-called 'erotic' folk songs tend to leave me somewhat err unmoved.

sometimes it is the feel of a song or tune that makes it sexy, not the words or the person playing.

there are several tunes that when dancing to you can't help but feel sensual and some songs that just make you want to ..... play.

Actually, I have thought of one folk song that I think is genuinely sexy. I can't remember it's name but it's on one of Ramskyte's tapes (yes tapes).

Young carter lad driving horse and cart, gives young woman a lift, and they let horse set the pace, and gradually the draw of the horse and the motion of the cart combine to a more personal rhythm...

Chorus goes

"And it's ride on Dobbin
Well done Dobbin
Gee up and way-oh"

I'm listening to http://www.pandora.com which I understand is available only in the United States. I entered the name of Priscilla Herdman, who I think has one of the most beautiful voices in folk music. So, Pandora is playing me all sorts of beautiful female voices similar to Priscilla - Kate Wolf, Joan Baez singing "The Great Silkie," and others. Maybe it's not all pure "folk," but I think I'm in heaven. Now, if only they'd play Janet Russell...

So, the trick is to pick the one folksinger that you think of as Ultimately Sexy, and Pandora will pick you others of the same ilk. I made my choice an hour ago, and I've been in continuous orgasm ever since.

Jayto:-

Banjos 'R' Sexy.

1.Well I'm driving down the highway,
Kinda surveying the scene
Giving all the chicks the eye
If yo all know what I mean
A trail of dust and broken hearts
But I don't give a damn.
I love em and I leave em,
That's the kinda guy I am.

2.It ain't my fifty gallon hat
Or my designer stubble,
My hairy chest,
That bulge in my Levis
Girls find irresistible
It ain't my daddy's millions
Or my open top Ford Mustang
My animal magnetism, my infinite modesty, or my all over suntan.

3.Now them good ole boys they envy me
I always get the girl
You either got it or you ain't
I tell them as my lip curls
You all cain't do what I can do
They all knew what I meant
As I leapt into the backseat
And produced my instrument.

Now I know some folks will disagree
But Its so plain for everyone to see

Chorus:-

Banjos are sexy, Banjos are cool,
All joking aside, those banjos rule OK
As I go round from town to town
I hear the folks all sing
Who's that guy with the banjo
He pulls the women and the strings.

4.Now John Wayne and Clint Eastwood,
Were both real megadudes,
But me , I put them in the shade,
Picking my good ole banjo tunes,
With it strapped around my shoulders
I'm feeling so well hung,
Let my fingers do the walking,
As it rattles like a machine gun.

My banjo makes me feel like I'm a King
At least it would if I could play the sodding thing.

Chorus:-

Banjos are sexy...

5.Mothers lock up their daughters
Slap asbos on my head,
But they all scream and wet themselves
As I hit that G spot dead on,
Then they'll throw their knickers on the stage,
I'll throw them back at them,.
or use then to wipe
The sweat from off my good ole
Five string friend.

Old banjos never die, you'll hear me croon
They just go slowly out of tune.

Chorus:-

then...

Come to my bedside, my darlin'
Come over here and gently close the door
Lay your body soft and close beside me
And drop your petticoat upon the floor

I've waited for you, oh such a long time
I plan a plan on every new day born
Words cannot express one thing I'm sure of
That it's in my loving arms where you belong

Your breast have told my ear life's golden secrets
Your back has shown my fingers endless roads
Your lips have whispered wisdom that is timeless
'Bout life and death and things I never know

Come to my bedside, my darlin'
Come over here and gently close the door
Lay your body soft and close beside me
And drop your petticoat upon the floor

Your eyes are bluer than the mountain waters
Your hair is flowin' dark and flowin' long
You skin has more gold than a morning sunrise
And it's softer than the breeze of the summer's Dawn

So come to my bedside, my darlin'
Come over here and gently close the door
Lay your body soft and close beside me
And drop your petticoat upon the floor...
