26 Jul 09 - 07:39 PM (#2687653) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Commander Crabbe Danjoe Can't find it either so a quick bit of typing and hey presto. I think it is correct however I'm sure that someone will say if there are any minor corrections! O'Carolan Tribute I sat and I thought of a man O'Carolan Who plaued for kings and lords and ladies To hear him play, oh must have been wondrous To feel such music played at his command And the people spoke of your mighty godly gift Bestowed on you when you were a boy To play the harp with your magical fingers To compose such music that left no desire And blind man O'Carolan where is your monument Build it so high that the world it can see All the people now have their music Through a blind harpist that helped them to see O'Carolan's concerto, was your tribute You wrote it so people would remember your name And the big hills the small hills, was your beauty That conversation between two hills And Carolan oh blind man, you wrote such masters You showed the people, you found our hearts And you gave our music a new beginning And from the people it will never part And blind man O'Carolan where is your monument Build it so high that the world it can see All the people now have their music Through a blind harpist that helped them to see Then a mighty man who's name was O'Riada He wakened the people from out of their sleep And O'Carolan's music, it was a part of him A man I remembered a man I admired And he spoke of you with great admiration He played your music with grace and with style And we'll remember you Sean O'Riada We will remember you for a long while And blind man O'Carolan he was your monument He built it so high that the world it can see And through O'Riada we can be thankful He showed us a blind man, that's helped us to see CC |

07 Sep 09 - 04:37 AM (#2717879) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: GUEST,fearghal or even did any other artist do a sung version? The original by O'Carolan is beautiful though with words it becomes even BETTER! |

07 Sep 09 - 04:55 AM (#2717887) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: bubblyrat According to MUCH debate on another thread, it is,in fact, just "Carolan" without the "O'" if it's just the surname you use.So one refers to either ; A piece by Turlough O'Carolan or A Carolan piece. No,I don't get it either, but apparently some learned men who use the pen,so to speak, have deliberated, discussed, and decided thus. |
07 Sep 09 - 04:59 AM (#2717888) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Mr Happy IMO the Carolan/ O'Carolan dispute has come about through the confusion of the running togother of his first & second names. As in Turlough pronounced Turl-O plus Carolan |
07 Sep 09 - 05:09 AM (#2717891) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: GUEST,Fearghal Thanks guys, fantastic info.........but (ahem) back to the original question: The tune by Eddie Furey, O'Carolan's (or Carolan's) Tribute....any idea which album, apart from "The sound of the Fureys" it appeared on? I am desperate to get hold of this song! Perhaps another artist has released the tune? |

07 Sep 09 - 11:20 PM (#2718568) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Smokey. The tune is also called 'Colonel John Irwin' in some publications. |
08 Sep 09 - 04:16 AM (#2718630) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: bubblyrat Sorry to harp on,guys,but in any case it's Turl-luch , as in "loch" (near as dammit),not Turl-lo,so negating your statement,Mr Happy ! Anyway,I think I prefer "Colonel John Irwin " ! |
08 Sep 09 - 10:15 AM (#2718891) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Mr Happy Not really negating my statement,as so many mispronounce it as 'Turlow' anyway! |
08 Sep 09 - 12:51 PM (#2719013) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: GUEST " I am desperate to get hold of this song! " ============== Well, Feargal, how well-acquainted are you with music on computers and with using MIDI? Give us a little information about what you need. If you have music software, you can go to this site: http://www.contemplator.com/carolan/complt.html and search for 'Irwin'. Left click on the title to hear the tune, right click on the title to save it. Let's hope that people here are correct in saying that the song you want is based on 'Planxty Irwin.' The beauty of MIDI software is that it gives you power over the song. You can change the key, change the speed, alter notes, change elefs, print it, write new parts, etc etc. ========= But perhaps you use ABC. I bet you could find an ABC file of it at JC's Tunefinder, which is a wonderful site with traditional tunes in many formats. Come to think of it, go there first and see what you find. |
08 Sep 09 - 02:44 PM (#2719122) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Stewart The tune is at thesession.org here. Click on the "comments" tab for a discussion of the tune and Turlough O'Carolan. Apparently there were words to Planxty Irwin (aka Colonel Irwin). An English translation of the first verse: We will take our way without delay To see a Noble, brave and gay, The gallant Colonel near the sea, Him I mean to treat of; With mirth and joy he fills his glasses, Delights to cheer both lads and lasses, This is John I will answer, The brave English Irelander. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
08 Sep 09 - 03:17 PM (#2719141) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Smokey. 'Colonel Irwin' and 'Colonel John Irwin' are two completely different tunes. 'Colonel John Irwin' is the one sometimes known as 'Planxty Irwin'. |
08 Sep 09 - 06:37 PM (#2719312) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: bubblyrat "Planxty" being a word invented by the great man himself, no ?? |
08 Sep 09 - 07:19 PM (#2719352) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Smokey. I'm not sure - I've certainly never seen it used outside his work, but then I've never seen a lot of things. |
08 Sep 09 - 08:22 PM (#2719398) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Jack Campin OED says they don't know where "planxty" came from but they think it might be from Latin "plangere", to strike. It certainly isn't from Irish. I'd guess maybe from Latin "planctus", lament. ("Elegy" was generalized to include poems that nothing to do with commemorating the dead, so why not that one as well?) |
08 Sep 09 - 08:47 PM (#2719419) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Smokey. I thought this was a possibility (from Wiki) : It is also believed that its origin may stem from the Irish phrase "phlean on ti" meaning "from the house of". |
08 Sep 09 - 09:02 PM (#2719428) Subject: RE: O Carolans tribute From: Tattie Bogle Fearghal, the only other recording I could find is on Itunes or Amazon, by "Screaming Orphans": you can just buy the one track if that's what you want. Nothing came up on all the Furey's currently available CDs. |
09 Sep 09 - 08:05 PM (#2720222) Subject: RE: O Carolan's tribute From: Commander Crabbe Fearghal it is also on "The Sound of the Fureys and Davy Arthur". http://www.tagtuner.com/music/albums/The-Fureys-&-Davey-Arthur/The-Sound-of-The-Fureys-&-Davey-Arthur/album-v2cf9b CC |
