28 Jul 09 - 04:53 PM (#2689070) Subject: RE: Folklore: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: Bill H //\\ One has to give him credit for honesty---including his comment about "...giveing a free concert --free to the public---doesn't mean I don't get paid". Many people think that performers donate their time for these things and for benefits when, in fact, many times (most times) they are paid. That is honesty. Bill Hahn |
28 Jul 09 - 07:22 PM (#2689232) Subject: RE: Folklore: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: GUEST,Elmore Bill: Honesty, who cares about honesty? It's the Republican angle that bothers me. This guy could be corrupting Pete Seeger. |
28 Jul 09 - 07:34 PM (#2689235) Subject: RE: Folklore: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: catspaw49 Arlo supported Ron Paul in the last election. That's old news. If you think of the "politcal spectrum line" it is really a circle. There is virtually no difference in the overall goal of the Ultra-Conservative and the Radical.......there may be a difference in method but the beliefs regarding the Constitution and Bill of Rights are very much the same. 28 Jul 09 - 11:12 PM (#2689341) Subject: RE: Folklore: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Read what Arlo has to say about being a Republican - he decided to switch so that he could be more effective. Think about it. If you wish to make change, wouldn't you like to have a voice in the party that needs it the most? Perhaps it is the best idea he had since teaching us to sing a song to avoid the draft! |
29 Jul 09 - 12:31 AM (#2689360) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: Stilly River Sage Garrison Keillor did a big deal about switching--to dilute the party. It was during the Bush years. |
29 Jul 09 - 11:33 AM (#2689634) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: GUEST well I'd say Arlo Guthrie's politics as demonstrated in his songs have always been very much of the freedom-to-enjoy-my-leisure-time-however-I-like variety. He's never been a Pete Seeger. Or a Woody Guthrie. |
29 Jul 09 - 12:58 PM (#2689696) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: open mike Arlo has a new "album" containing selections he recorded before woodstock, which will be released soon. It is called Tales of '69 He has great stories, great humor, and gets his audience singing along. He also has a daughter and son who are carrying on the musical tradition, and he has contributed to our music, our culture and our world!! In many ways he does portray the spirit of his dad and Pete!! |
29 Jul 09 - 03:48 PM (#2689840) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: Bill H //\\ Elmore: C'mon---Republican, Dem, Independent---that is his business and, frankly, spelling it out (and the reasons as well)---that IS honesty in an interview. As are some of the other comments. Who knows---maybe he is doing just what the FBI and other agencies do---get into an organization to find out about it and its members. My tongue is firmly in cheek. Foot, however, not in mouth just like Arlo. Bill Hahn |
29 Jul 09 - 05:04 PM (#2689889) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: Elmore Bill: Arlo makes his politics our business by slanting his perfomances to the Left, then claiming to be a Republican. On the other hand, I saw Arlo after he came out for Ron Paul,so, I guess I'm only half serious. After all, I've had an intimate relationship with a Republican, my urologist. |
29 Jul 09 - 07:02 PM (#2689979) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NYT From: Bill H //\\ Elmore: Perhaps he is trying to make the Republicans take a left turn. I too have had a nice relationship with my urologist as well---no politics we just thought we shared an intimacy for a few moments---AH the memories. Seriously, I was always surprised that the Republicans became the party of the South since, earlier, it was the Dems bailiwick==and then George Wallace came along and things changed. Not that he was a Republican Bill Hahn |

30 Jul 09 - 09:31 AM (#2690293) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NY Times From: WFDU - Ron Olesko You folks just aren't paying attention. Instead of worrying about Arlo "corrupting" Pete Seeger, can't you give Arlo credit for making an attempt to enlighten the Republican Party. You people are stuck on labels and stereotypes. You are not on any higher moral or ethical ground than anyone else - and if you took the time to read what Arlo has to say instead of your usual knee jerk reactions to a NY Times blurb (that most of you have not read), you would see that Arlo has not changed his politics and his father would be damn proud of him. He would probably be ashamed of some of the posters here however. |

30 Jul 09 - 11:49 AM (#2690356) Subject: RE: Arlo Guthrie in NY Times From: Charley Noble Nice interview and I wouldn't lose any sleep because of Arlo's political party preference, given his stated reason for joining the Republicans.
