BS: Having a beer with Obama

28 Jul 09 - 04:49 PM (#2689067)
Subject: BS: Having a beer with Obama
From: Bill D

It is with great regret that I must withdraw my support & respect for President Obama. The meeting with Gates and the police officer seems to be scheduled....enough that they are releasing info on the brands preferred.

Gates said he would take a Red Stripe or a Beck's... tolerable, but shows little class.

The police officer wants a Blue Moon... shows knowledge of styles and taste, though not the 'best' in class. Perhaps it's a budget thing.

Obama says he will be drinking Budweiser....arrrggggghhhhhh.

The police officer wants to hear the song. He doesn't drink.

LOL

Here we go again.

Bill, I thought you were joking. Is this for-real? The beer with Obama thing?

What I want to know is - who's going to drink who under the table?

Obama is cultivating the everyman image, if he chose something exotic he'd be labelled an elitist.

Are we all invited, too? If so, when is it. If not, then WHY?

It is also possible that Obama is simply not a beer drinker.

All?? Heck, the olive-skinned neighbour isn't even invited. The 911 dispatcher - whose skin-tone, incidentally, we STILL don't know - isn't even invited. I haven't even been invited. This a very exclusive chug-a-lug.

A Bud man! Damn straight! Bud... the beer of choice for beer drinkers who want a beer that tastes LIKE beer but doesn't sit in yer mouth like a wet dog and does not leave you hung over in the morning like all the other crap you guys keep saying are SOOOOO much better than Bud. It outsells everything else in NA for a reason... well two... maybe BO doesn't know it, but every Bud bought is a vote for the NRA.

Shane McBride should also be allowed to attend this meeting...as he is a world class expert in that field.

He has a very low opinion of American beer, though, so I think he would probably request a Molson Export or a Labatt's Blue.

As for Chongo, he would probably go for the Budweiser.

"What about smokes?" asks Shane. "It'll be Players Light fer me."

I'm still trying to determine if this is a joke or not. Like, am I gonna be the only guy who shows up dressed to party, spliff in one hand, beer in the other?

I don't think I've drunk a well-known brand of beer in a couple of decades. We've got some darned good micro-breweries around here. I used to drink Red Hook's "Ballard Bitter" until they changed it (too hefty for some people). A couple of years ago I was introduced to one from a Montana micro-brewery:    "Moose Drool."

In one episode of "The Red Green Show" (Canadian), in the Possum Lodge word game, the secret word that Red was trying to get Ranger Gord to say was "Water."
Red:    This is something that everyone drinks.
Gord:    Beer.
Red:    This doesn't have any taste.
Gord:    Oh! American beer!

Blue Moon (they check yer age before letting you in, then it gets fancy)

The Blue Moon I have had is a wheat beer modeled on Belgian styles. (The Belgians still do it best)

They will not be able to have their meeting at Doyle's. Some years ago, the new management of that venerable saloon in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston decided to upscale its clientele, and, as a way of driving away the riffraff who used to drink there, removed Budweiser from the beer list. What is more remarkable, that business decision was spread upon the minutes in an interview published in the Boston Globe.

Now Real Budweiser, from the Czech Republic, is a completely different thing. But I don't imagine Obama would risk offending the voters by drinking it instead of the American version.

We get it up here in Canada. Typical European style beer, nothing special but miles above US Bud, needless to say.

On sale here in all the supermarkets. For some reason they still seem to sell a fair amount of the American version, so taste isn't everything, advertising affects these things as well.

I doubt if it'd hurt sales of American Budweiser if the Czech original were on sale there as well - after all the people who buy Bud already have plenty of much better native beers which they don't choose to drink.

Nice one, Dick!

Traditional after "When Jones Ale Was New"
New Verses by Charlie Ipcar 2009

When Shipyard Ale Was New

Pres. Obama came through the door,
Had one Bud and fell to the floor,
When Shipyard Ale was new, me boys,
When Shipyard Ale was new!

Sgt. Crowley came in looking fain,
Tossed off a pint and felt no pain,
When Shipyard Ale was new, me boys,
When Shipyard Ale was new!

Prof. Gates was the last come by,
He never drank beer but he said he'd try,
When Shipyard Ale was new, me boys,
When Shipyard Ale was new!

They drank so much of the ale and stout,
They had to close the place and throw 'em out,
When Shipyard Ale was new, me boys,
When Shipyard Ale was new!

Cheerily,

In the bath! In the bath!
Let the leaders of the world all meet together face to face
In the bath! In the bath!
There's room for Ike and Khruschev and all those other chaps,
Macmillan, Viscount Monty -- then we'll have peace, perhaps,
Provided Swann & Flanders get the end without the taps,
In the bath! In the bath!

Bobert-

Well, the U.S. government would have saved about $1 trillion, over 4000 U.S. soldiers would not have been killed (not to mention the 40,000 wounded), and we might not have ended up in such a deep recession. But why sweat the small stuff?

Evidently Prof. Gates and Sgt. Crowley had only complimentary things to say about one another at the beer blast. Neither one apologized, nor did Obama.

Since Bush was a reformed alcoholic and Saddam was leader of one of the biggest Muslim nations, and neither could therefore be seen to have a beer or anything similar, the drinks tray might have been a little bit sparse.

Even as of yesterday afternoon, the local news had predicted that Gates would be drinking a Red Stripe (he ended up drinking a Sam Adams Lite). Changing his mind on that was a VERY good move. Can you imagine the political fallout of having the one adversary drinking a beer with RED in its name and the other one drinking a beer with BLUE in its name? (i.e. There'd be speculation that Gates was hinting that he's a closet Republican despite donating to Obama's AND Hilary's 2008 campaigns. Not sure what Crowley's political stripe is.)

Still not sure why Joe Biden sat in on the "summit"... perhaps as a moderator? As some sort of "designated driver" of the discussion, since he was the only one drinking non-alcoholic beer? Lord knows Biden was the one most likely to have said something "stupidly" off-the-cuff and to have re-ignited the conflict!

31 Jul 09 - 10:34 PM (#2691392)
Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama
From: meself

Maybe Biden was there to provide "racial balance" (two Whites and two Blacks, rather than one lone White with two Blacks who were, in a sense, his antagonists). And/or, it might have been thought desirable to have one person there who wasn't implicated in the conflict. Or maybe he's good to have beside you in a brawl.

Subject: RE: BS: Having a beer with Obama
From: SharonA

meself: Since Obama's technically half-Caucasian and half-African, there should have been racial balance with just him, Crowley and Gates at the table. Unfortunately (and, I think, disgracefully), our society still thinks in terms of color and labels mixed-race people "Black" so, frankly, having Biden there provided COLOR balance (two light-skinned people and two dark-skinned people).

I'm guessing that he was just there for moral/political support of younger politician Obama.

I agree, though, that Joe Biden would be a good man to have beside'dja in a brawl!

Almost all bottled or canned beer here in NB, Canuckistan is pasteurized. If it is draught, it MUST say "draft" on the label.

Tavern beer on tap is draft. And you can buy small "kegs" at the powerhouse (liquor store). We do have a limited number of "agency stores" which are found in rural areas.

I thought normal spelling of Engloish words was allowed ub Canada...

So does that mean you have to have a sign on a beer pump or a beer tap saying that it isn't a bottle or can? Like saying "this product may contain nuts" on a packet of peanuts?
