Just read this
. I've never been a massive footie fan but I remember seeing Bobby play for the Baggies when I was a kid, and was always struck by his decency in a world where the word isn't always at the top of the agenda.

Very sad news indeed - although not entirely unexpected. One of the game's total gentlemen and hailing from the North East was a big plus too.
RIP

A gentle gentleman.

He told the tabloid press where to get off on more than one occasion. That certainly endeared him to me. I am sorry to hear he has gone.

The BBC Obituary says he was given the "freedom of the city" of Newcastle, and later of Ipswitch. What's that mean?

It is a symbolic honour given by a city in the UK Joe. It is a bit like the civic equivalent of an honorary degree. In some cities you have the right to drive a flock of sheep or geese through the city. I can't remember anyone actually exercising such a right. It is just the way that the cities pay tribute to their more distinguished citizens or erstwhile inhabitants.

It's kind of like being given the keys to the city....

His standing ovation at the Sports personality of the Year summed up many thoughts and feelings for this great footballing character. It just went on and on,a very emotional occasion. He would have stayed on as England Football Manager had he not been attacked by the press, those who are now saying how wonderful he was. A lovely man and a great loss.

Yes - how the English betray their heroes.

In death he is practically canonized as a saint, yet when he managed England he was slagged off mercilessly by the press and public.

He was a good manager who didn't deserve to be treated so ungratefully.

Like Trevor, I have never been involved in football - however, we will all greatly miss a fine gentleman. May he rest in peace.

I watched the TV programme dedicated to the memory of Bobby Robson last night and a representative of one of the papers was talking about the newspaper slaughter of Bobby Robson at the time he was England Manager, his excuse was "Oh well, You must remember there was a Tabloid war going on at the time", So that was the excuse for a load of lies and humiliation of one of the greatest football managers this country has had.
