The Crown, Otford - 2009 Beer&Folk Fest

21 Aug 09 - 08:19 AM (#2705352)
Subject: The Crown, Otford - 2009 Beer&Folk Fest
From: Kev The Clogs

It's that time of year again People!! The Crown Pub in Otford (near Sevenoaks, Kent) is holding a Beer/Folk weekend on Friday 9th October, Saturday 10th October and Sunday 11th October. (The weekend after Tenterden)

There will be a Selection of twelve or so beers and ciders (and there are some crackers!!!) in the large marquee outside in the garden. Mark, the Landlord, would like as many Folkies to attend as possible - we can sit in the garden area and sing and play (if it looks like bad weather, we can move into the marquee!!)

There is a full programme of events for the Saturday with Morris Dancing in the afternoon - certainly Bishop Gundulf's Morris and maybe Hartley or Waddard (I need to contact them first and ask them!!!), followed by folk singing and playing. During the afternoon, Rob The Fire Juggler will be giving demonstrations and running a workshop. There will be a Hog Roast from late afternoon.

There will be two bands taking the proceedings into the evening - Fiddle Fit (Judith and Bob - will be great to see them again) and then Longspoon (the headlining band that were at my Aylesford Village Festival this year).

The pub no longer has Sky TV in the bar, so we won't have a repeat of last year of having to push past the hordes in the bar that were involved in the football (ok Hoff??!!).

Turn up when you can. The main Folk slant is on the Saturday, but if you are there on the Friday or Sunday, then I'm sure that you will be welcome to sing and play inside as well. Sunday is a quieter affair - at the moment - but the resident Folk Club, TYravellers' Rest are being approached to see if they would want to come and do something in the afternoon.

There will be indoor camping at the local scout hall - approximately 5 mins walk from the pub, past the railway station. Mark, the Landlord has the key, so enquire when you get to the pub if you need to - the cost is £2 per person per night. (Conditions are basic and the loos could be cleaner, but hey, what do want for £2 per night?!!).

This is Mark's second attemp at this, so wish him luck.

Hope you can make some/all of it.

Regards

Kev

News of The Duck Pond (just for Rafflesbear).

The pond has been de listed so that the work could be continued!!! The pond was lined with modern breeze block prior to being faced with old stone. Some very striking, new house bricks have been placed around the edge. The base is now being sealed with a special compund of mud and the turfs will be being relayed around the edges shortly. At that point, I assume, they will try to get it re listed again. The bricks were in fact an original feature of the pond but disappeared over the years to be replaced by whatever was handy (still not too sure about the colour!!!)

Anyway, hopefully, the pond could well be completed by the time the Beer & Folk Weekend happen??!! Let's hope so, as it has been a building site for over a year and a half.

I shall be there at some stage, Kev. The idea of having crackers with the beer sounds a bit posh (I hope they're Jacob's!).

Thanks for the update on the pond Kev - I have been keeping an eye on it and it still seems in a sorry state although the work is active if not progressing.

Looks to me as if the sides have been raised - it's probably difficult to see the water standing on the pavement on the south side. I still find it difficult to accept there is something worth listing here it now being effectively a modern ornamental pond albeit on the site of a historic one

Better to list the palace, the church, the solar system (not the real one but the largest scale model in the world), Becket's Well, a roman villa (?) and The Crown itself (anyone know if any of these are listed?)

Tam- hope you realize that Stratford holds the Mop Fair that weekend. Bit of a no-go area in town. We won't be going this year. Ben isn't entering folk award. however, we have been invited up to Derby by some friends, so won't be at Otford either. Hope it goes well Kev.

I have just received an enquiry from another source but at this stage do not want to put it to the side if others are already booked.
Do you still want Hartley as I can ask everyone on Thursday evening to see if we can raise a side.

The pond seems to be finished but it still sports its plastic mesh construction fencing albeit in a subdued green now rather than the original lurid hi-vis orange - just a fortnight for it to come down - speaking of which what's happened to romany man?

You folks are in for a REAL treat!!

I'll place it on a webpage attached to my Website when I get in tonight - I'll then get back here and provide you all with a "blue clicky" :-)

PS - yes, they are expecting people to stay in the scout hut. The landlord will have the keys and will give them to a suitable person on the evening!! Remember, if there are that many of you - make sure that you arrange breakfast with him on the Sunday morning in the pub - he has said that he will give you all a good rate.

Damned silly place to get to!

Some mapping services say West Malling then M20 M26 A25 turn right for Otford, some say A2 A227 Borough Green then as above, some say A2 M25 A21 left past Knockholt then a left into Otford, one says Farningham then south - all coming out between 50 mins and an hour each way.

Train allegely 1 hr from Higham but Higham is 15 to 20 mins by car.

I think it's car in time for sing - probably the first suggested route above - I like the road south from Borough Green but I think they have put speed limits on it now - and at end of sing car back!

Richard... there are easier ways to go, one is the A21, but am unsure how you would get to it. I suggest you come up M25 to A21 (Orpington turn off.Head towards Orpington) At next roundabout ( Hewitts ) take first exit. At next roundabout ( Badgers mount ) go straight ahead, and down Poll Hill. At the bottom of the hill is a turning on the left marked Otford. 300 yards to t junction(Pilgrims Way) turn left and drive straight into Otford. Avoid driving into duckpond, pub on left. Car park (large and free!) on same side of road, but 100 yards or so beforehand. Hope this helps.

Now I know why they left the mesh fencing on the west side of the pond - obviously to prevent people coming from the A21 driving into the pond !

Sad to see the Crown has resorted to the dreaded 3 poster grass verge advertising that disfigures the roads in the area - does this wind other people up or just me ?

05 Oct 09 - 04:18 PM (#2739100)
Subject: RE: The Crown, Otford - 2009 Beer&Folk Fest
From: Richard Bridge

Yes Sue, that is the second possible - aim for Knockers (from me), left off A21, then don't turn right to Knockholt Pound. But I fancy the A25. There is a razzle-dazzle route across from Meopham to the back of Brands Hatch that we used to use to go to Farningham in the old days to avoid the Po-Lice (and breathalisers) on the way back from the old Farningham club, lots of fun in a Mini or a Morris Minor but a bit iffy in a bloody great Volvo, and then still the run down the speedlimits from Farningham.

I remember one night coming back from Farningham with my old mate Tom driving my souped-up Minor Traveller. We actually came up the A227, and had given a biker a lift. He said he did not take his Norton up that road as fast as we did it that night. But there are cameras on it now.

I gather that it is a long-term ambition to reconnect as a branch line with an interchange somewhere to the West, some time.

Slight change of subject from the Crown but I can help with Tenterden.
Catch, as I did, No.12 bus from outside Headcorn station - 5 min connection with train from London. Drops you right outside the Town Hall/Woolpack.

Yes the No12 is the best cos the last bus to Headcorn leaves at 22.12!!! Otherwise it is Ashford and then only one bus to Tenterden. This website is invaluable - www.traveline.org.uk - gives all modes of transport between two places - even tells you how many minutes you need to walk!!!

In the bottom left-hand corner of the webpage, where it indicates different modes of transport, just tick the box next to the reefer icon and it'll calculate the extra time required for those that are stoned.

Or click on the beer glass icon and it'll do the same calculation for pissed travellers.

Should you be under the influence of both, just tick both boxes and it'll give you a combined total of the extra time required to complete your journey.

Enjoy your journey, sir!

Well Im not falling for it. Now then.

(Actully there are some lovely Cave Paintings In Margate Caves Kent that date back to the 17th century.)
Indeed done by bored Smugglers who had Nowt better to do while hiding from Excise Man.

There are some lovely paintings in the Army tunnels at Crockmere Haven East Sussex which were done by bored soldiers during WW2. These include Battleships HMS K.G.V. & Hood.

Theres a rather nice naked lady drawn in the Chalk at
Chislehurst Caves Kent. done by me bored back in the 80s

And there is a Spitfire drawn on the roof of the Plumsted Chalk mines. How the artist got up there is "beyhond me.
I foresee He was without doubt bored out of his tits has to have started such a ambitious sketch.

Impose some discipline indeed,
I put it to you all,
Its Richard Bridges fault
"its his doing he started it?
He invaded this thread with all this jibber jabber, nonsense Regarding Cave paintings.

Has for the Tenterden spankings ?,"
Well he will want us to wear tee shirts next
and insist we string a banner up on the Scout hut ?
What a Parlava.

I am looking forward to this event and will be traveling with Fisheye hope to get there about 13.30 hrs.
Bringing Tanglewood which sounds awful at moment because the Nut fell off after Knockers and I reset it myself which has thrown out the whole set up/action.
Pointless bringing the mandolin the nut on that split down one side so that wont work ever.
I think I will have to change my Nuts for Brass one on both instruments.
see you all there Pierre

See you all tomorrow.

I've discovered that Otford is about the one place that's a doddle to get to from my home. Free bus ride (OAP privilege), then a fifteen minute direct train ride. What's more I can start for home up to seven o'clock.

I'll be there by 11.00am so seven might be a stretch.

Not had me folk fix this week so I'm looking forward to it.

Pete, Rodgers is back from foreign parts.

I don't suppose you'd fancy swinging through Snod to pick up a willing navigator?

If yes, what time were you thinking of arriving there?

Should be a good day!!!!!

Enjoy!!

Cando Don, but the timing may be fragmented. My aim is to miss the Morris dancing, sing, and miss the bands. I'm sure I have your phone number somewhere and will ring you as shopping progresses.

Kev - but on those two alcohol levels will anyone remember if it was a nice day or are you reviving the 60s?

I am planning to get there for the Morris, and the sing Richard, so I'll catch the bus and train, but I would be grateful for the lift back, as our plans for leaving time seem to co-incide, and that'll save me a longish hiatus at the change from train to bus.

I'll see you up there.

Pete my speedy limousine will have you there before 13.30. that's assuming you are on time, i do not run out of petrol and no naughty policemen stop me.
This early in the morning I am debating whether i should bring my banjo also. I know JB enjoys the sound of a nice banjo and I believe RB is also joining the appreciation society.

That's a "nice banjo", Fisheye, that we enjoy, as played for example by JB's mate whose name I always forget, Tracy or Stacy, or something that's a bit unusual for a bloke: he is awesome, always bang in time, and can do sensitive too.

The beer was nice - all those I sampled. Back in 40 minutes despite sticking to all speed limits and stopping to drop Don and Ken off in Snodland and St. Rude. Why do the mapping sites say it takes 50 minutes?

Well I think everybody enjoyed themselves!!??

I did!!!

Some very good beers - I stayed on the Imperial Stout and the Winter Bus (that would probably explain why I was pissed by the end of the evening and why Val was in charge of getting me home, feeding me and sorting out why I missed my tiolet completely in my own home!!!) (that's why I love her to bits!!)

I hope those that braved the scout hut were ok for the night.

Had to return at lunchtime today to collect my drum sticks that I managed to leave behind last night. The beers were still flowing, but there were some very jaded looking people (including myself!).

Sheppy Paul and Helen turned up about one o'clock - glad you managed to make it. Apologies that there were no other folkies there!!!

Mark, the landlord, was very pleased with how things went - and thanks you all for turning up. Make a date for your diaries - it will be happening again next year!!! Also, in conjunction with Keith, he will be running a regular evening with Folk bands every six weeks, in the marquee with a suitable selection of beer (I'm sure the scout hut will be available if needed!!)

I'll keep you posted as and when.

So thankyou all.

Regards.

Kev

Well what a great afternoon throughly enjoyed myself. Has for the Scout hut what a Fiasco
that was. No one told me it was in the middle of the bloody woods.I was so pissed I couldn't open the door when we all eventually got there.. any way when we got into the Scout hut after about twenty attempts we couldn't lock our self's in the Scout Hut door wont lock from the inside so that was a right Rigmarole.,
we secured it with a yard broom in the end which Im sure would have kept any hungry creature of the night at bay.

Fiddlefit duo was excellent.
The Rock band in the evening were great guys and played both great covers and there own stuff was very good. well done lads.

I only had one Arse hole who confronted me but he backed down when I told him he would be sucking his Sunday lunch through a straw if he didn't F off i do not know who he was but he looked like Bart Simpson.

The beer was excellent Mark well done I was on the Village Idiot most of the day and that 10% stuff most of the night.

Richard Bridge what is a pair of side-cutters for Christ-sakes?
its title reminds me of a RN Missile system?

Hopefully now the Scout hut has been tried and tested it will be used by Mudcatters next year. be warned it is cold I couldn't go to the Loo till 1800 hrs tonight by which time me intestines has thawed out.
Kind regards to all Pierre

Mark the landlord/ his wife and the great and friendly bar staff of the Crown.

thanks for Fisheye for lift there/thanks to Ken and Roberta for keeping me company in the Scout Hut and the lift home next day.

You seem to have all enjoyed yourselves. I had a brilliant weekend. We were kept thoroughly entertained from start to finish. All indoors too. There were no long gaps in between concert, and we had to eat on the hoof, but the guests were amazing. Steve Tilston, Les Barker, John Tams, Martin simpson, Coope, Boyes and Simpson, The Poozies, Mawkin-Causley,Keith kendrick and Sylvia Needham et cetera et cetera. Next year, so as not to clash with Ban bury, they are bringing it forward by a week. Could be farewell Tenterden!
Dare you accuse moi of thread drift? Nah.

Hi folks I had a great day I believe a little more organized this year,so role on next year.
I did realize something ( a Lesson to all ) if you cannot control your fingers to play an instrument...be very wary about driving home...That extra half i gave to Pete would have certainly put me in the scout hut. Thanks to all the organizers and look forward to next year.

Thanks for organising it, Kev.

I had a great time on the Saturday. The Imperial Stout was rather nice. Sensibly, I only had one of those just before leaving (at least, I think I did!).
