Mobile Line

Well hey mama now did you ever go down on
Down on the Mobile Line
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Holler 'bout the Mobile Line
Well it's a road to ride to ease your troublin' mind

Well I got a letter, now this is the way it read
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Holler 'bout the way it read
Said come home baby because your lover is dead

Well I ran out and I hopped out on the road
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Holler 'bout on the road
When I got there she was laying on a coolin' board

Now when I die mama don't you bury papa at all
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Holler 'bout your papa at all
Just throw my bones down in some alcohol

And when I die mama put my picture in a frame
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Holler 'bout a picture in a frame
Hang it up on the mantle you can see me just the same

And when I die I think I'm gonna stop by France
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Holler 'bout a stop by France
Gonna stop by France just to give all the women a chance

Well hey mama now did you ever go down on
Down on the Mobile Line
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Holler 'bout the Mobile Line
Well it's a road to ride to ease your troublin' mind

Well it's a road to ride to ease your troublin' mind

Thanks, Joe.

Ian, when you get some of it sorted, please let us know what else you require, OK? Lots of people around here who have real blues experience (I ain't one of 'em), and lots of folks who just like to help.

Don't say out loud that you play BANJO!

Ian - it's highly likely that many of the original versions of what you want will be available to hear for free on "Spotify" - the CD streaming site. I've found it incredibly useful for different versions of songs.

If you haven't got to Spotify, you can read all about it at:

Spotify

If you can out up with adverts, the service is free - not available in the US, though.

SWEET TO MAMA
As recorded by Frank Stokes and the Beale Street Sheiks, Chicago, August 1927
True key of B flat, I chord position 'G' capo 3

(Instrumental verse intro)

I woke up this morning, ah, soon this morning, with the blues all around my baby's bed.
Lord, I woke up this morning with the blues all round my baby's bed.
I turned my face to the wall, and baby, these are the words I said:

Now, sweet to mama, how sweet to mama, now mama, tell me where you stayed last night.
Lord, it's sweet to mama, now, mama, where'd you stay last night?
Now, your clothes are all wrinkled, mama, your hair sure ain't fixed up right.

Now, it's two drops of water, two drops of water, now, baby, one or two grains of sand.
Lord, it's two drops of water, Lord, and one or two grains of sand.
My baby, the blues ain't nothin' but a woman want to see her man.

Now there's two big steamers, two big steamers, my baby, running along side by side.
Lord, there's two bullyin' steamers running along side by side.
Now, you stole my good gal. I guess you're satisfied.

Now, mama told me, my mama told me, my baby, when I was a child,
Lord, my mama told me, Lord, when I was a child,
You have a good time now, you'll have trouble after a while.

If I just a-listened, just had a-listened, my baby, what my mama said,
If I just had a-listened, great God, what my mama said,
I would have been at home trying to live with you every day.

Now, when you see the spider, you see the spider, my baby, runnin' up and down the wall,
Lord, when you see the spider, Lord, they're runnin' up and down the wall.
He must be goin' somewhere, because he's tryin' have his ashes hauled.

Now, weepin' Mary, a–weeping Mary, a–weeping Mary, don't you weep no more.
I said, a–weeping Mary, now, Mary, don't you weep no more.
Now, stop and take your time, and do your work everywhere you go.

GEORGIA CRAWL
As recorded by Henry "Rubberlegs" Williams & Eddie Anthony, April, 1928.

Come here, papa. Look at sis,
Out in the backyard just shaking like this.

CHORUS: Doin' the Georgia Crawl, oh, Georgia Crawl.
We don't need to buy a thing(?), do the Georgia Crawl.

I can shake it east, shake it west.
Way down south I can shake it the best.

Come in this house, gal. Come here right now.
Out there trying to do the crawl and you don't know how.

Old Aunt Sally, old and gray,
Doin' the Georgia Crawl til she died away.
