We'll be doing the usual tourist stuff, Smithsonian etc., and I'm wondering if there are any (folk) musical events happening that I should be aware of. Even though I no longer live in the area, let me commend The Hard TImes Cafe in Alexandria: 8pm for some shanty singing in the upstairs. You can get a pretty good chilli there too. If you want to make a day of it, take the ferry boat down from Georgetown, dock at Old Town Alexandria and meander your way up King Street till you hit # 1404 ... then there you are! My brother and I went, had a bowl of chili, waited around for the sing while drinking some excellent root beer, and then joined in the sing. It was a musical highlight for me. I even had the nerve to lead out on "South Australia" and later, "Jock MacGraw" which was well received even though not a shanty, strictly speaking. Only trouble is, I've got "Barrett's Privateers" running around my head this morning. Rita and Bill, I'll call soon when I get a moment. Meanwhile we've been running around like crazy seeing the museums. It's been exhausting really. Probably won't have time for much else. Jon W. |

From: Charlie Baum Liam's Brother-- If you're into Irish music (Knowing you, it's sort of like starting "If the sun will rise in the East tomorrow...") there's a wonderful session at Paddy Mac's in downtown Silver Spring on Sunday afternoons from 4 to 7 p.m. It's an Irish pub on the second floor at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Thayer Street, about 4 blocks from the Metro station. --Charlie Baum |
