BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw - home on Saturday!

09 Sep 09 - 08:03 PM (#2720219)
Subject: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw
From: katlaughing

First off - he's okay, well sort of. He's in hospital at least through Saturday while they get rid of a nasty bug, either a cold or something else. He's tested negative for flu; they will be testing him for the swine virus, but that's standard for anyone coming in with respiratory stuff. Anyway...after a long night in the ER, they admitted him and Karen got to go home for about two hours of sleep.

She sounds good, but a bit tired. She said he's been sleeping all day and feels miserable. She said this is NOT "the one"...that by tomorrow, he will be a lot better and the antibiotics etc. will have taken effect. She said he's basically in for a tune-up.

They would appreciate any spare thoughts, etc. you all may have. I will be calling him, directly, tomorrow for an update.

I'd think we've had our fill..nobody else is allowed to get ill on MUdcat, ya hear?!*bg*

While he's in for a tune-up I hope they'll change the oil, clean the upholstery, and by all means fix that cracked glass. Install a fart filter if they have one. Oh, and make sure to send him home healthy again!

Good luck, Pat and Karen. Get your rest and take care of yourselves.

Yikes! Well, Chongo has his usual sage advice to pass on, which is: "Give him lotsa hot mulled cider spiked with even more whisky and rub some powdered red pepper all over him, specially the parts below the belt."

I don't know about these chimp cures, though, when it comes to people. Chimps, after all, are tough as hell.

Git well, and git home, 'Spawser.

And Karen, you take as good care of yourself as you take of 'Spaw. They don't hospitalize folks for the common cold or a 24 hour virus, so I'm hoping and praying the H. admission is simply about being very cautious with a feller who has had a heap of health problems and interventions.

Now that I think about it, when one considers the amount of money that has been invested in keeping the old fart going, he really is an investment Karen wants to protect;^) Probably represents the investment of their life savings, and then some! No wonder we consider him a national treasure.

Light and hugs, and watch the coughs - they can cause wet farts.

No ya can't; so you have to go and get sick to get some sympathy 'n' prayers 'n' stuff.
Well, it ain't gonna work, pal, 'cause nobody here gives a rat's ass.

When they went to the ER, he hadn't taken his evening meds, yet. He kept telling the personnel that he needed to get some meds taken, esp. important things like lasix. I think it was about 6p when they got there. They finally got seen around 10p, admitted and meds administered, which by that time were really needed!

Janie, Karen told their son, Michael, "this isn't the one," so I think he's okay. I know it is a long time to keep him, but she feels they have a good handle on treating his symptoms even as they figure out what is causing them. It did start out as a cold and I know he's been really concerned about swine virus, sorry I keep forgetting the proper name for it, H1N1 or whatever it is. I'll post as soon as I talk with him...keep in mind, I am an hour earlier than him and two hours earlier than Mudcat, so those of you in the East and beyond may have to wait a little while in the morning.

I'll be sure to pass on the "good" wishes!:-)

Here's a tip from a nurse of my acquaintance:

Make sure the staff washes their hands before they touch you. Otherwise they can spread stuff from people who are really sick to you.

It would probably be nice if they cleaned the stuff they stick you with, prod you with, and in general use on you. Especially rectal thermometers, enemas and things like those. You want to be sure that the thermometer they stick in your mouth is the kind that's for sticking in your mouth, too. You might want to check that yourself.

I hesitate to post this until I can talk to him more, but I think it's best that I do. He sounded awful just now. He had a doc there, so we only spoke for a minute, but when I said you don't sound like you feel good at all, he croaked out a breathless "no." I know he is in one of the best places for good care and Karen believes he will be okay, so I continue with visualisation of him healthy and home. May it be so!

I'll probably call Karen at some point today and see what's up.

Very funny, ya'll. Just spoke with Karen. He is still "awful" which I know you all will be so glad to hear.:-) However, his fever is still up there, about 102 and they are still giving him meds, fluids, etc. Karen is positive they will get him past whatever virus it is and be able to send him home by Saturday. She is glad he's there and not at home.

She said he will do mind games at home, sucking it up and telling himself he won't be sick; then when he's finally convinced to go in, when they get amongst the docs and nurses, etc. he just kind of lets go and is really sick. I don't think it is a white coat phobia, either.:-)

Yesterday was the 13th anniversary of his heart bypass surgery. Thirteen years!! I am so grateful he has made it this far and am breathing deeply for him. I don't "feel" any panic or anything. I think Karen has a good handle on it. She's going to call me tomorrow morning, after she gets off work, with an update.

We love you, Spawdarlin',

Okay, just spoke with Karen. The good news is his white blood cell count has gone down, so the antibiotics must be helping. She reiterates she has seen him a lot worse, but it does not seem good, just yet.

He has been "upgraded" to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) because they couldn't keep his O2 up with just a mask. He is on BiPap for now, which he hates when he is awake, but which is keeping his O2 sat rate at around 97 which is good. They drew blood gases three times last night. I don't know if any of you have had that done, but it hurts like hell. Karen said his PH levels are all messed up. With the BiPap, that should improve. He has a little bit of infiltration in his left lung.It is some sort of virus which he probably picked up from her or the kids and just hasn't been able to to kick like they did or like he did a few years ago.

She figures he will still be in there through Monday, at least, which is when she will have to go back to work. She's been able to take a couple of days off, plus he is in the same hospital where she works, so she can sneak off to see him on a break now and then AND, at least she doesn't have a long drive between work, home, and caregivers for Tris and Michael.

She said cards would be welcome and i just checked the hospital site for an addy. This is pretty neat, the hospital has a thing set up where you can send an e-card direct from Their Site. Not a lot of variety, but it's free and easy for those who may not be able to get out to the post office, etc. To make sure it goes to the right person, fill in the blanks with the following:

Patient's Name: Pat Patterson
Hospital: Mt. Carmel East
Room Number: ICU

Karen was nesting this morning when she got home. Did a bunch of laundry etc. She was glad we talked, said she'd be able to sleep once she'd caught us up on the latest. I asked her frankly if she was being optimistic for everyone else's sake and was really concerned this might go south and she told me no, that she really has seen him worse. She is a scientist and has such a laid-back, calm manner. She told me of course she *thinks* about his possible passing all the time, but this just isn't the time. I believe her instincts are spot on.

Here's the snail mail addy:

I will let ya'll know as soon as i hear anything new. I am still feeling pretty good about this. His good karma, from all of the giving and love he's spread throughout his days of foster-parenting with Karen and from being the incredible dad he is to their boys and from being a truly, genuine friend, will get him through. Well, that and several thousands of dollars of drugs and medical care.:-)

Yeah, don't worry. The last spontaneous words my mother spoke to me (I'd awakened her) were "...and don't come back!" No, sorry, they were "I'm worried, very, very worried." Karen just called. He is doing a little bit better in that they did not have to vent him last night, when they thought they would have to..that is GOOD! She thinks he is almost out of the woods. He loves having his back scratched. She knows if he were awake enough he'd be bothering about his back hurting so much from lying in bed so much. He rolled over when she was visiting, so she scratched his back, knowing it would help him feel better. She was laughing when she told me he started making sounds like an ol' hound dog...in fact she said if he could he would've been kicking his legs it felt so good.:-) That's some visual, eh?

Karen says THANK YOU to you all and she loves us and will call when she knows more. She and the boys are going to go up this afternoon for a visit. They are very strict about visiting hours, esp. in ICU.

The word is "much". You don't say "isn't nearly as fun". That's NOT good English! Tut! Tut! No....you say "isn't nearly as much fun".

This is good...just spoke with Karen. They got him up and he sat in a chair for awhile, today, so he is more alert. Lung xrays showed a bit more gunk, being a true layabout isn't exactly good for them when one is ill, so they really are working on keeping him up more and coughing more. His BP and pulse look good and he is just on a nasal cannula for the O2 rather than the mask, which I am sure makes him much happier.

This is how we know he is on the mend, even though he is still in ICU and feels VERY miserable:

Karen said there were a bunch of nurses, etc. trying to get him back to the bed, having a hard time with all of the IV lines, O2 line, etc., including a tube coming out of his frontside into a urine bag. They got to laughing and joking about an accidental strangling and Karen having to sue them, when Pat said, he could just see the headline...Man strangled by his own urine!

He's back, very slowly and still fighting it off, but at least there's a glimmer of the Spaw we know. So keep it up folks, please!

There's a Google advertisement on my screen for an enema supplier called (drum roll) "Enemeez". They sell enema bags and enema buckets. "ENEMA BUCKETS?" I thought, "I've never heard of an enema bucket! Who the hell could possibly be so full of shit that he'd need an enema BUCKET?"

Then I remembered the subject of this thread: our good Mr. Patterson.

So, I checked the site out, thinking an enema bucket would be an appropriate homecoming gift for Spaw, only to find, to my great disappointment, that an enema bucket is simply a graduated plastic pail for measuring and mixing enema solution. They're not for administering the enema at all! And the only size they have is 1500 ML. 1500 ML? That's only, like, 3/4 of a gallon! That's not a BUCKET! It's barely a friggin' pail!

So, does anyone know where to get a Spaw sized enema bucket? Something around, say, five gallons? And does anyone have a spare funnel and a few feet of garden hose?

Scarey? Nah... Spaw was only ever being a regular guy that didn't give two fucks from Sunday what some sorry ass broke dick fuck had jammed up his tight ass and couldn'y shit out because of his anal retention. Spaw calls a fart a fart. And a bullshitter a bullshitter. And, Spaw will do it for many years, in his way, which most admire and laud, even though his prose is at time base and common and raw.... of the peeps, by the peeps, and for the peeps.

Scarey? Scarey if did leave us.

Rest well my good friend. And git yer ass back home.

Still the same. Still miserable. Got the cards, but not quite ready to focus on them; Karen said there were bunches and "Thank You!"

Actually, his fever has come down to 99. They have had him sitting up and on the BiPap. They took him down for a cat scan this afternoon to look at his lungs. He is on anti-flu and anti-biotic meds.

Karen is having a bit of a time with the whole feeling at the hospital this time. They've always been very supportive, "warm and fuzzy" is how she put it. This time, they are rather perfunctory. She thinks it is because the hospital is going through some tough patches and personnel are concerned about their jobs, but that is no excuse.

Even knowing she works there, they have been very strict. They won't let her slip up on her breaks to see him because it wouldn't be visiting hours, so she has to stay up when she gets off work in the early AM, go get Tris and take him to school, go back to visit with Pat during reg. visiting hours, THEN go home and try to get some sleep, then get Tris, take the boys up to see Pat, then go to work after dropping them off with friends.

She has been cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, etc. She is sure he will make it through this; just be a long haul. Still there is the anxiety which comes with waiting for the treatments to show more improvement. When he is coherent, he is damn tired of it, too. In a lot of pain from not moving around much. She is going to see if she can get someone like my osteopath who does soft tissue manipulation to help with that.

I am optimistic, but don't feel very p/phunny about this right now, so, I'll say,

I am giving thanks for a swift and complete recovery for my dear friend, Pat. May he return home in good health and spirits. I give thanks for this or something better for the highest good of all concerned. So mote it be!

Let's start the wake.

Euologies are waisted on the living - and never appreciated by the dead.

Time to crack open that ancient bottle of booze...take it to his room...wet a piece of gauze and slip it between his lips so he can partake too.

So...to steal from Oscar & Hammerstein...and start the "good thoughts....."

The daisys on the hill
Will give off a differet smell
Once poor paw is underneath the ground.

Karen, hope you can find time to take care of yourself as well as your old man and the youngin's. If you have friends, family or neighbors that can help with getting the kids to and fro, please ask them to pitch in so you can get some rest. And remember, housework and laundry are always there to be done, and can be neglected for the sake of a good night's sleep, or a bit of personal time. Apropos of nothing:

When Bella Lugosi passed away his funeral was very small. He died in almost total poverty. He was buried in his costume from Dracula.
Boris Karloff came to the wake and while viewing the body was heard to say. "Bella, If you are putting me on...?" Then he bowed his head and walked off.

Spaw, if this has all been a large joke, next time I drive through to visit my daughter in Kentucky I'll stop by and shake your hand for I am in the presence of a master. If not. Take a pill and get better.

OK, folks, I just got off the phone with Spaw. I started by telling him that he was an asshole, and needed a good swift kick in the 'nads. I let him know that he really pissed me off, cause all of a sudden my daily PM's from Mudcat women and other friends had dried up!!! No one was inquiring how I was doing anymore!!! And I found out it was because Spaw made a desperate play for attention, even getting himself admitted to ICU, just to get all the friggin' attention. He let me know I was a friggin' amateur and that's what I got for messing with the best. Then we talked about billable hours in Lane, Fielding, Patterson & Swan, Layabouts at Large and for Hire. He said that he thought that for a while there he might be in a position to mount a challenge to Fielding for the most billable hours next year, but some damned Doctor got involved and now he is on the mend. I told I had to cancel 3 months worth of gigs in order to have any chance of catching up to him on laying about.

Bottom line is, he is on the mend, is out of ICU, and Karen is settling down a bit. Karen and Pat are a real team, and when Pat goes down, Karen goes into hyper drive, taking care of everything and neglecting herself. And Pat lays there and worries about things getting done and Karen's health. So the healing needs to get on. And while you are sending cards to Spaw, don't forget to send a card to Karen. She is the best.

Love these folks,

All the best,

Mick

You should know better than to challenge the Master of Sloth, Mick. Listen, man, I have got a fat old Dachshund here who is so frikkin' lazy that he won't even get up to take a crap or get a drink of water. Nothing will move this dog. He expects ME to lift his leg for HIM when he takes a pee. I am trying to get him employment after years of this indolent and parasitical lifestyle of his which has generated nothing but an endless flow of bills for food and outrageously expensive veterinary treatment. I have submitted his resume to numerous local and national outfits for the following positions:

1. doorstop
2. bookend
3. industrial-strength paperweight
4. air de-freshener (he is damn good at that!)
5. imitation roadkill (you can hardly tell the difference, really...)

So far no responses. I fear that this dog may remain unemployed and a financial burden on me for the rest of his unnatural life!

And you know what?

Spaw is EVEN WORSE than that!

So don't even try to compete with him, Mick. Just accept what cannot be changed. ;-D

He called, again! Mick must've lit him up a bit more.*bg* He sounded much better even than last night. The docs said maybe they'll spring him out this weekend, but it's more likely to be the first of the week and I told him not to push it. Being such a loyal layabout, he agreed with that.

Karen was having a nice moment at home, sitting on her exercise ball which is just the right height to view her fish in the 55 gallon aquarium and she bought two new beauties, today. It's a good way for her to relax. Mick's right, though, about the way those two go about things; Pat goes down, Karen speeds up.:-)

It sure is good to hear him speak.

Now of course I'm glad you're improving or so I hear in this thread. I'm sorry I'm late in posting I don't usually read below the line, this time my finger slipped and I happened to see your name.

Your illness puts me in mind of "New York CPR"

One stands over the stricken individual, leans in close and says in a loud voice: "Get up before you fucking die."

Allow me to paraphrase:

"Get out of the hospital before you fucking die."

Yes!! He sounds SO much better! Just got off the phone with him. He is going home tomorrow morning! He will be back online in a day or two. I told him not to rush it, but he's got to do some other computer stuff, anyway, so we might have a sighting in a couple of days.

You folks are wonderful!

If the measure of how well a person is cared for is the amount of sh*t that is dumped, shovelled, thrown, hurled or otherwise propelled at them, then 'Spaw is well and truly loved. On the scale of 1 to 10 on the Sh*t-O-Meter he must be a 12, and if laughter can heal all then he'll live and post on the 'Cat for another century or two at least! Dunno if I'll be around that long though :-(

Cheers,

Andre

Well first.....Thanks to you all and as usual there are never enough words to say what is really in my heart. I do want some of you to know I was able to deliver all the babies successfully ...... Kendall sent me a lovely photo card---a fuck you right back atcha' ...... and Bobertz card put me in the mood as well as the staff.

In all seriousness I will come back with more detail about this nasty one later but the pneumonia took over 50% of the volume in both lungs and the Docs say it will be at least 6 weeks to fully recover and assure its gone. Folks, this one was bad. I feel pretty good but get tired almost immediately.....simply amazing how weak I am......and a bit depressing as well. So I'm gonna' take it easy getting back here as well.

I had a few laughs in the hospital as well though which will add to my continued collection of dumb medical crappola.

Thanks again and I'm damn glad to be out and about again, even if a little slower! Much love to you all. And Greg? Dodged another one old buddy --- LOL.....

Ebbie... "Congratulations to us all!"

How perfectly fitting. Almost brought a tear to my eye... the good one.

You have reminded me by that concise accolade of the contributions Pat has made to The Mudcat Café in so many ways over the years. The writings and stories, being a friend to all, leading the way in fund drives, defending and supporting the policies that make this vauable resource what it is, and using his unique vernacular to call a broke d... you know, amongst others.

Congrats indeed.

Thanks Ebbie.

Now... enough of that. Six weeks before you can take a good kick in the nuts? Brings a tear to me bad eye.

We're going to have to be happy with the one or two postings he's been able to do, for a while, folks. They've got some rearranging to do at home for convalescing and he's got to take it slow and steady. Lucky for him, he doesn't have to be on supplemental O2! Spaw, here's what you do to regain your energy. Go to the Crazy Horse Monument webcam. Whenever I'm feeling a bit low on energy I just log on to that site and watch it for about five minutes. Five minutes is all I can take. I get so charged up that I have to run around the block about five times after that just to calm down! And it's a big block here. We're talking about a 3 mile run. Whew!

A gneiss suggestion, LH. A larger stone could be used to try for a boulder solution. Though healing stones should not merely be taken for granite, the use of more than one at a time can make it an either ore situation, possibly requiring as much as a couple of quartz, at least.

Spaw, I'm not good at the clever insults à la Little Hawk and Amos or twisted enough to match Severn's puns, so I'll just say I'm relieved that you didn't actually "croak" when you "croaked out" breathlessly that you did not feel well.   Really glad you're back among us (even if sparingly for now).   Hope all the fart jokes and other Mudcat wisecracks are lifting your spirits and inspiring your recovery.

And I do hope you're back up in fine farting (and other gastric expulsion) form soon.

Now that he's home do I have to continue to spare thoughts for him? I don't have a lot to spare, you know, what with the Council beaming protons into my brain unless I wear my aluminum hat.
