BS: Mudcat Roll Call - Occasional Check-in

13 Sep 09 - 04:12 PM (#2722910)
Subject: BS: Mudcat Roll Call - Occassional Check-in
From: katlaughing

Every once in a while one of us will think of someone who hasn't posted in a long or short while and we might start a thread asking if they are around. I thought of a couple this morning and decided maybe we ought to try having one thread where we can post if we are wondering about someone and/or anyone who comes back, is around and doesn't post much, etc. could post here to let us know they are okay.

So, the two I am wondering about are:

Llanfair - last I remember she was laid up with a broken leg;

Capri-Uni - I know she's out there, but I miss her and hope she will pop in.

Actually, I miss a lot of folks, but those two are on my mind, today.

Might it be anything to do with it being Festival Season over here and loads of people become hard to track down in the summer months?

Naw, Cats, I am sure there are a few, but I am mostly thinking of folks whom we haven's seen in ages. Of the two I listed, one lives over here and the other has been MIA for a long while, as have some of the others who have been listed.

I think there's been a mixup? Last I knew, which was recent, Bonnie was still Bonnie, though she did use Banjo Bonnie instead of Little Neophyte for awhile. She's doing very well and is incredibly happy with her life.

Hmmm...I don't see either name listed in the members list I call up to send a PM.

I haven't heard from Bonnie for a bit, but I believe I saw her post within the last few months. Funny thing is that most of these folks who aren't around here like they used to be all know people who know people and someone who's still here is bound to have some contact.

Not sure if that addy works now or not. I don't think she has much time for it, anyway, though I don't really know. Last time I tried to hook up with her, her son answered and it sounded a bit chaotic. She wasn't there, so I left a message which I think got a bit garbled...you know a voice out of the blue...It's Kat from Mudcat...might as well say I'm Agent 99, as confusing as the other sounds to non-members.:-)

Hey, Kat... I must've got your vibes, 'cause the thought popped into my head today:

"Gee, I wonder if my Mudcat Cookie has expired or not..."

What I've been up to:

In August, I took part in a community on LiveJournal, where folks make a new piece of art every day for the month...

I also got it in my head to refresh my knowledge of American Sign Language; I first learned Signed Exact English (SEE) as a kid, and eventually took two freshmen-level semesters of the real, actual language when I was at university. But I've had no one with whom to practice in the 18 years since. So I'm automathing on the Internet, these days...

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Roll Call - Occasional Check-in
From: katlaughing

Kewl, CU! Great to *see* you here. Any pix of your art projects online? I remember when my sister had the lead in the Miracle Worker, she had us all learning sign language so that she could practice. Supper time was quite interesting. I think I can barely remember the first few letters of the alphabet.

14 Sep 09 - 01:51 AM (#2723136)
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Roll Call - Occasional Check-in
From: CapriUni

Sure, Kat -- here is my 2009 National Art-Making Month Gallery.

IIRC (and I may not) the "signs" in The Miracle Worker are limited to the manual alphabet. In the actual language ASL, the manual alphabet is used for about 15% of the total sign vocabulary -- mostly used for the spelling of proper names and titles, but occasionally, letter handshapes are incorporated into a sign (such as using the "U" handshape for "uncle" and the "a" handshape for "aunt").

So using the alphabet for entire conversations would kind of be like chatting in Morse Code ;-)

(It's useful for the deaf-blind, though, because each letter can fit into the palm of the recipient's hand).

14 Sep 09 - 10:33 AM (#2723368)
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Roll Call - Occasional Check-in
From: katlaughing

Yes, that's what I remember of it...just the alphabet and yeah, chatting in Morse Code is very apt.

Thanks for the link! You are so talented. I esp. loved the thumbprint critters and the little fish hanging from the fingers and the rab-bat and..well...all of them!

Robin2 ? I was her Secret Santa back in 2002 -- when she had a debilitating stroke just before Christmas. She was rehab-ing last I heard, 'way long ago. Is she OK now? Does anyone know?

53 ? That was the handle for Bob and his wife Glenda. Bob, who is bipolar, became so upset by some of the nastier posts here that Glenda posted a final signing-off for them both. I forget how long ago that happened. Wondering how Bob is doing.

Many people, myself included, will I feel sure have left because the place seemed to have been taken over by prats starting really tedious threads in the music section, and the loonie left anti-fascist brigade spitting vitriol at the BNP in the BS (both groups being as bad as each other to most right-minded people).
I could name the most guilty but don't think I need to - they name themselves very clearly.

Two prime examples of prattish retorts:

1) "anti-fascist brigade spitting vitriol at the BNP"
And this is a bad thing??? from Bobad

Try and read the whole sentence next time Bobad, you know it makes sense.

2) "So if you've left, giovanni, how did you manage to post that?"
from McGrath (who really should know better - you let yourself down Kevin)

That would be "left membership" and occasionally looks back in to see if things have improved - ah, I see they haven't. See you all next year then.

quote "I don't think you can actually "leave membership". "giovanni" still shows up as a member"

In which case, apologies to the member giovanni, I was never him.

I'm a totally different ex-member who just thinks the place has been taken over by prats and regrets the loss of what was a great community. Maybe The Shambles was a boring sod, Clinton a wanker, and Martin Gibson didn't know when to stop taking the piss, but even they were more fun than some of the twats you're all having to put up with these days.

And it seems a shame that some really quality people - maybe even yourself included - seem to be getting dragged into the mire by the company you keep.

Back in the early years of Mudcat, there were some "regulars" who really knew a lot about folk music, and I wonder what happened to them. Abby Sale isn't around much any more, but he does look in.
I haven't seen RichR or Tim Jaques in years, the guy named Bill who always used to sign things with, "Allinkausay, Bill."

Then there's Shula and Rechal and Sheye and Cuilinonn (sp?). I wonder how they are.

And yes, I have heard that some respectable folk song researchers are reluctant to associate their names with the nastiness that goes on at Mudcat. I wish I knew how to resolve that, and still maintain an atmosphere of free expression.

I have some sad news. I found Metchosin's email addy the other day, so sent her a quick note. I knew she had been ill, fighting a rare type of leukemia which seemed slow-acting. I just received the following from her husband:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but Susan passed away last October 16 after a year of battling her leukemia. She remained courageous and in strong spirits until the end. She was at home in the company of her dogs and myself and didn't have to experience the demoralizing experience of in home care that would have started the following day. I think she had simply had enough of it all and decided it was time.

Rest in Peace, Mets. You are loved and missed.
