Like a rocket to the moon, it was over much too soon, when she hit me on the head she broke my heart. (*,sound effect of glass saucers smashing to pieces) *SMASH!, OWW!, *SMASH!, OOOH!, *SMASH!, AHAH!, *SMASH!, OWWW! (chorus:) Flying saucers, flying saucers, flying from the hands of my wife, flying saucers, cups and saucers, are breaking up my happy wedding life. Last night I sure was blist, when she threw a plate and missed, I cried this is goodbye to our romance. But she pleaded as she said, though the plate just missed your head, I'm your wife and I deserve another chance. (repeat from smashes and groans through chorus) So to science I declare, for those saucers in the air, you don't have to look to Jupiter or Mars. You can solve this mystery, find a woman who is free, marry her and you will soon be seeing stars. (repeat smashes, groans and chorus) Okay, not exactly what was requested but I couldn't resist HTML line breaks added. -JoeClone 26-Jan-2001. |

01 May 03 - 11:59 PM (#944647) Subject: RE: Flying Saucer/Space Songs From: Allan C. Am I the only one who remembers "John Cameron Cameron"? For those who don't, here is an excerpt from a biography of Dickie Goodman: Then in June 1956, Goodman came up with an idea. "Bill Buchanan and I were writing some songs at the time," said Goodman in a print interview, "trying to break into the business. We were sitting around and suddenly we got an idea. How would it be if we had a disc jockey show being interrupted by reports of a flying saucer - THE FLYING SAUCERS ARE REAL! - and suddenly the Platters line (from "The Great Pretender") came to me - 'Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal' and we said 'Hey!' and we didn't know any better so we put the thing together." Within a few days, Goodman and Buchanan spliced together a four-minute reworking of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast. Goodman played "John Cameron Cameron," an unflappable reporter interviewing people, officials and even the Martians themselves. Buchanan was heard as a title-mangling disc jockey (allegedly based on Alan Freed), who interrupted a peppy dance number with news of an invasion from Mars. Buchanan: We interrupt this record to bring you a special bulletin. The reports of a flying saucer hovering over the city have been confirmed. The flying saucers are real! Radio: Too real, when I feel, what my heart can't conceal... (from the Platters' "The Great Pretender") Buchanan: That was the Clatters' recording, "Too Real!" And that set the pattern. Goodman would interview eyewitnesses about the spaceship, whose responses were the lyrics of popular songs. Goodman: This is John Cameron Cameron downtown. Pardon me madam, would you tell our audience what would you do if the saucer were to land? Witness: Duck back in the alley (from Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally") Goodman: Thank you. And now the thin gentleman there. Witness: What I'm gonna do ... is hard to tell (from Fats Domino's "Poor Me") Goodman: And the gentleman with the guitar, what would you do sir? Witness: Just take a walk down Lonely Street (from Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel") The record continued. While the flying saucer landed on Earth, Buchanan and Goodman greeted its arrival with more splices, in-jokes and primitive technical wizardry. Goodman: This is John Cameron Cameron on the spot. And now I believe we're about to hear the words of the first spaceman ever to land on earth. Martian: "A WOP BOP A LOO MOP A LOP BAM BOOM" (from Little Richard's "Tutti-Frutti") There was more but this is a sample. |

Now whether John Servaice is still around to see them, that is another matter. That was his only post, but perhaps he is still around, using another name. As to the sound ~~ imagine the Blue Sky Boys or a lighter hearted Monroe Brothers sound, complete with guitar & mandolin backing, with a fiddle break after two verses. WHEN YOU SEE THOSE FLYING SAUCERS as sung by the Buchanan Brothers, 1947 You'd better pray to the Lord When you see those flying saucers It may be the coming of the judgement day It's a sign, there's no doubt Of the trouble that's about So I say my friend, you'd better start to pray They're a terrifying sight As they fly on day and night It's a warning that we'd better mend our way You'd better pray to the Lord When you see those flying saucers It may be the coming of the judgement day Many people think the saucers Might be someone's foolish dream Or maybe they were sent down here from Mars If you'll just stop and think You'd realize just what it means They're more than atom bombs or falling stars And though the war may be through There's unrest and trouble brewing And those flying saucers may be just a sign That if peace doesn't come It will be the end of some So repent today, you're running out of time When you see a saucer fly Like a comet through the sky You should realize the price you'll have to pay You'd better pray to the Lord When you see those flying saucers It may be the coming of the judgement day |

02 May 03 - 11:08 AM (#944901) Subject: RE: Flying Saucer/Space Songs From: PoppaGator Wow! Thanks to Guest L Fletcher for reviving this thread after years of dormancy! As I began reading the original 1999 messages, I was wondering whether the Holy Modal Rounders' "Mr. Spaceman" was the same as the Byrds' song of the same name, but as read through the thread I learned that -- as a parody of "Mr. Bass Man" -- it was not. "Mr. Bass Man" was a novelty rock 'n' roll song (late '50s/early 60s) poking fun at the lower-register scat singing characteristic of the "doo-wop" group vocal style. Quotes from the Rounder's lyrics make it plain that their "Mr. Spaceman" followed the "Bass Man" tune. The Byrds' "Mr. Spaceman" was a completely different and presumably original tune, a simple three-chord country-style ditty: Hey, Mr. Spaceman Won't you please take me along / I won't do anything wrong Please, Mr. Spaceman Won't you please take me along / for a ride. Another Byrds tune that might be appropriate, although much less "folk"-style musically, is "Eight Miles High," notable for the instrumental intro where McGuinn plays a transcription of a free-jazz saxophone solo (Ornette Coleman?) on the electric twelve-string. I'm not up on my astrophysics, so I'm not sure if an altitude of 8 miles puts you in space or just the outer stratosphere. In any case, I think the song is about psychological rather than astronomical "space." Another space-related fave of mine, which might be a bit obscure for most of you, is "UFOs Exactly" by Ed Volker of the Radiators. I still think of the Rads as a strictly local New Orleans band, but after 25 years of touring they have built up an national and even international "cult" following, so maybe they're not totally unknown to all of you out there in the wider world above sea level. I know the UFO tune ("UFOs Exactly / Flyin' over a hot dog stand..") from live performance, dating back *more* than 25 years to when half of the present-day band performed as the Rhapsodisers. They've continued to play it on and off over the years, and I figure it's probably on one of their earlier albums. PS to Alan C: Yes, I remember the "John Cameron Cameron" novelty records fondly. I also remember hearing a feature about them on (US) National Public radio a year or so ago, prompted by the release of a book by the crator's son. |
02 May 03 - 11:35 AM (#944920) Subject: RE: Flying Saucer/Space Songs From: Charley Noble There's also the early 20th century novelty song "Come Take a Trip in My Air Ship" which has been discussed and posted in the threads. Another "newer" favorite has to be Pete Seeger's singing of "Martian Love Song" which is on his 1958 Gazette recording by Folkways Records; don't know if that one has been posted but with encouragement I might do that. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Lucite nose, rust-proof toes, And when her antenna glows, She's the cutest Martian gal. You know she promised me, recently, She wouldn't stray, But came the dawn, she was gone Eighteen billion miles away. Her steering wheel has sex appeal, Her evening gown is stainless steel, Has anybody seen my gal? How I miss all the bliss Of her sweet hydraulic kiss, Has anybody seen my gal? Lovely shape, custom built, Squeeze her wrong and she says "tilt", Has anybody seen my gal? She does the cutest tricks, with her six stereo ears. When she walks by, spacemen cry, 'Specially when she shifts her gears. If she's found, rush like mad, Put her on a launching pad, Down at Cape Canaveral, And shoot me back my cutie, My supersonic beauty, Send me back my Martian gal. |

Benson, Arizona, blew warm wind through your hair My body flies the galaxy, my heart longs to be there Benson, Arizona, the same stars in the sky But they seemed so much kinder when we watched them, you and I. . Now the years pull us apart, I'm young and now you're old But you're still in my heart and the memory won't grow cold I dream of times and spaces I left far behind Where we spent our last few days - Benson's on my mind. 23 Sep 09 - 06:02 PM (#2729977) Subject: Lyr Add: STAR TREK PARTY SONG (Mike Sutton) From: MikeofNorthumbria A few years ago, our Morris team was booked to do an interval spot at a festival ceilidh. When we got there, the audience seemed ominously small, but our musician remarked : "Don't worry, the party never starts till the Klingons arrive." Of course, Morris men aren't really like Klingons – well not much! – but sure enough, once we got there, more people started crowding in, and the evening became very enjoyable. Eventually, a song grew from that seed crystal. At first I thought it would need a tune rather like the Admiral's song from HMS Pinafore (… "And now I am the ruler of the Queen's Navee!"), but our aforementioned musician sings it to a speeded up version of an old dance tune, "The Durham Rangers". This seems to work well, but feel free to experiment. Wassail! The Star Trek Party Song There's a whisper in the alley, there's a murmur down the lane, There's a rumour circulating that the lads are out again. So the quiet and the cautious are all leaving on vacations While the noisy and rambunctious are preparing celebrations All the traders put their shutters up, and hide away in fear, But the party never starts until the Klingons get here. (Yes, the traders put their shutters up, and hide away in fear, But the party never starts until the Klingons get here!) Mr Spock has taped his ears (in case they're torn off in the fray) Captain Kirk has let his hair down (or he's bought a new toupée). While Uhura's getting mellow, and Bones is hanging loose, Mr Scott has found the bar, and started knocking back the juice, There's a bison on the barbecue, and ninety kegs of beer, But the party never starts until the Klingons get here. (There's a bison on the barbecue, and ninety kegs of beer, But the party never starts until the Klingons get here!) The Romulan Shakespeare Company have done their mummers' play, And robots have been summoned, to wash the blood away, The Cardassian Morris Dancers are all sharpening their sticks, While their heavy-metal jug band roars at forty thousand klicks There are twelve Bajoran strippers swinging from the chandelier, But the party never starts until the Klingons get here! (There are twelve Bajoran strippers swinging from the chandelier, But the party never starts until the Klingons get here!) Now the Enterprise is outward bound, they've beamed up all the crew, Although most are still hung over, and the rest look rather blue. The old Feringi barman has begun to count his cash, But the Klingon lads are looking round for something else to smash. And half the planet may be wrecked, but still the fun goes on, Because the party isn't over till the Klingons have gone! (Yes, half the planet may be wrecked, but still the fun goes on, Because the party isn't over till the Klingons have gone!) (c)Mike Sutton, 1999 |

Oh phantom of Flatwoods from Moon or from Mars, Maybe from God and not from the stars, Please tell us why you flew o'er our trees, The end of the world or an omen or peace? |

It has a Mexican flavor in the lyrics. I have tried over 40 years to locate its title. All I remember is the opening lines which go like this: Went to the beach one sunny day see a flying saucer in the bay See my girl, she say stay away she greet the little green man aye yah yah yah yah. He was little with two big green feet both of them move to the cha cha beat. ----------------------------------------- That's all I remember. This qualifies as a space man song. but with a title I have yet to find. If anyone knows or recognizes this, please append to this blog so I can get a copy of this song before it's too late. 01 Oct 14 - 03:36 AM (#3664913) Subject: RE: Flying Saucer/Space Songs From: semi-submersible Some of the old links have broken over the years. Here are a couple of replacements: Charley Noble (02 May 03 - 11:35 AM ) mentioned and ClaireBear (19 Sep 09 - 01:50 AM) linked to "Come Take a Trip in My Air Ship" in the Levy collection. Find it here. GUEST,Jim (02 May 03 - 03:54 AM) mentioned "Rishathra, or, Prime Directive Shmime Directive" by Ookla the Mok. For what it's worth, it's the last song in their Supersecret album, and you can get lyrics (pdf) by clicking the album cover (red background, blue/yellow shield marked "Shh") on this page. Five minutes before Guest Jim, Susanl posted a link to her own http://susanlatimer.com/clouds.htm but her website's all gone now, taken over by Japanese-language commercial-looking content. I wonder what she'd linked to, 11 1/2 years ago? |
