She will find out tomorrow what type it is and that will determine whether she will have six months or two years of treatment. Chemo. Her hair will fall out. 27 Sep 09 - 08:16 PM (#2732792) Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat hugs requested From: Donuel Take heart that treating childhood leukemia has made the most progress of cures and remissions compared to other cancers. In the old days leukemia seemed like a death sentence, but not anymore. After all the atmosheric testing in the 50's and 60's the rate of childhood leukemia went up 900%, an astonishing increase. But today the incidence is very small and the treatments are excellent, effective and expensive. Hugs all around but there are plenty of good solid reasons to be of good cheer and remain honestly positive. |

WARNING - FOLLOWING MAY BE TOO SAD FOR SOME TO READ, RIGHT NOW - When I was thirteen or fourteen, we lost a girl, Janie, in my school; this was near mid-1960s. I had known her in elementary school for a couple of years, then we moved on to different circles, but she was always there. Everyone at school loved her. She was ill off and on and we missed her. Then she couldn't come to school and the next thing we knew, we were threatening a sitdown in the halls of school if they didn't let us out for her funeral. They did and I believe it helped us to understand our own mortality a little bit, plus it helped to share our fears and sorrow. We would have traded all of that to have her back, though. Thank goodness this does not have to be the case these days; treatments are so much better. Sorry if this causes too much pain or fear. |

Friends of mine were walking home with their two children, a boy and a girl. This was after a h-u-g-e rain storm --- and the ground had turned into thick gooey mud. Every time they took a step forward, they fell back three steps. They were afraid they would never get home. The two kids put their heads together and thought hard about their situation. And they DID figure out a way out of the problem. All three of them turned around --- and went in the opposite direction!! They got back home faster than they ever had before!! BE WELL QUICK... That's got to be good? I didn't even realise there were different sorts. They are to start the treatment immediately. There are probably hundreds of different kinds of leukaemia known by now, and about as many different outcomes and appropriate kinds of treatment, ranging from "give up, nothing will work" to "no treatment is needed, you'll die of something else decades from now" - and in between, some kinds have very effective new treatments. It would help a lot for somebody to find out which she's got. |

28 Sep 09 - 08:13 PM (#2733665) Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat hugs requested: 13-yr-old with leuk From: Amos Recent news from PhysOrg: Scientists have discovered a completely new route by which leukaemia develops, according to research published in Nature this weekend. Scientists from the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute at the University of Cambridge studied a gene called JAK2 which is faulty in many cases of leukaemia - but until now its role was not clear. They discovered that if JAK2 is faulty, the cell's meticulously controlled message system 'short circuits'. As a result many genes are switched on and off inappropriately and a completely new cell signalling route by which leukaemia can develop is turned on. The scientists found that the enzyme made by the JAK2 gene is also located inside the cell nucleus and plays an important role to control how genetic information is used by the cell. Previously it was only known to be located on the inner surface of cells - acting as a messenger between the outside of the cell and the cell's nucleus. The team discovered that the JAK2 enzyme acts in the nucleus to switch on and off a number of genes. It does this by changing the structure of histones (the proteins that pack and protect DNA) and which control the behaviour of many genes. The garbled messages from the faulty JAK2 gene lead to mismanagement of histones which results in catastrophic effects on the workings of a cell. Lead author Professor Tony Kouzarides of the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute at the University of Cambridge said: "This is a completely new route by which cancer can develop. In this exciting research we have revealed new unidentified parts of the cell's messaging system which can become faulty and lead to leukaemia." Perhaps this will lead to a solution. Warm regards to Alicia and all who watch over her. A |

She and all the friends are learning very quickly. Shady went to visit again last night but the treatment starts today and they won't be able to visit for a bit due to risks of infection. Alicia's father is going to sort her out a laptop and dongle (whatever that is!) so she can get on line and communicate with her friends that way. Meanwhile the girls have spoken to their head of year about doing some fund-raising. Since they are all musical and performing sort of people it has been suggested that maybe they think about putting on a concert with the help of the school. Other things have also been suggested, such as a cake stall, various sponsored things etc. Love Lynne |

I lost my youngest son, Grant, to this disease just over three years ago. He had been diagnosed with leukaemia at age 12. It was Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), that time round, and chemotherapy lasted for two + years. Three years later on it was AML. The doctors here said there was a 75% chance of complete recovery at his age. (The older you are the lower the chances for a complete cure, apparently) Unfortunately, at 16 plus, he turned out to be in the "25%" bracket. I pray there will be a better outcome for Alicia. Alex |

Anyone who wants to send anything can do it either by PayPal to me, (Not sure what info you need to do that) or PM me for my address and send a cheque or whatever. I'm Lynne Tann-Watson, for anyone who doesn't know, so that should be enough for Paypal Love Lynne |

Sorry I didn't notify you about the date being moved forward. It's becaue one of my other friends has to go into hospitaland for something tomorrow. *rolls eyes* Anyway, all my friends did really well and, out of the five of us doing it, not one of us said anything! 19 Nov 09 - 07:49 AM (#2769118) Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat hugs requested: 13-yr-old with leukemia From: MBSLynne There was a piece in our local paper this week. One of the little group of friends got in touch with Great Ormond Street hospital and they helped her to arrange a sponsored bike ride. (Shady couldn't participate because, shamefully, she can't ride a bike) A lot of kids turned out for it and altogether they raised £1,100. With other things they all have planned, they will probably end up raising over £2,000. Alicia has said that she doesn't want the figure skating lesson they were going to give her with the first bit of the money and that it should all go to charity. She feels she owes so much to various charities. She will decide which the money will go to. The situation may be making them grow up rather quickly but it seems to be doing it in a good way! Everything positive so far, so here's hoping it all continues so Love Lynne |

11 Dec 09 - 02:20 PM (#2786299) Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat hugs requested: 13-yr-old with leuk From: VirginiaTam Maybe they all got distracted by the boxes of fairy wings and craft things I sent to the girls. It is close to Christmas, maybe Lynne is wrapped up in school and/or church programmes, shopping and parties. They do lots of holiday parties here in UK. Work, family, friends. It seems endless. BTW Lynne... more probably headdresses and fairies coming after Christmas. My daughter is bringing them back to me from the US when she visits. |

01 Mar 10 - 03:30 PM (#2853349) Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat hugs requested: 13-yr-old with leukemia From: MBSLynne So sorry guys! I hardly ever go on Mudcat anymore and there wasn't really anything to report so I didn't bother. Now there is. Alicia has just left hospital with the all clear (so far). Obviously she's not completely out of the woods yet but It's all very positive and hopeful. I think it is a little earlier than was first said as well, so that's got to be good. She's not back at school yet but will be returning after the Easter holidays. The girls have finally managed to collect almost all of the money that was pledged to them for their sponsored silence and have handed it in to school. School will then write out a cheque to the charity of Alicia's choice. When I hear what the total was I will let you know and also tell you what charity it will be going to. Thanks so much to those who sent money to swell the fund. I'm sure all the thoughts, prayers and wishes and general good energy being sent by Mudcatters must have helped this happy outcome. Don't stop yet! Thanks again guys and sorry I was silent for so long. Love Lynne |

09 Apr 10 - 08:12 AM (#2882759) Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat hugs requested: 13-yr-old with leukemia From: MBSLynne Well Alicia is back at school on Monday. She spent a couple of half-days there to get herself back into it before the Easter holdiday. A letter was sent out to all parents asking them to inform the school immediately if anyone had chickenpox or shingles as it could be life-threatening for Alicia. Shady says she has pretty, short hair now. I still haven't heard the final total for the fund-raising they did but it is, at Alicia's request, going to Clic Sargeant, which for those who don't know, is a children's cancer charity. Thanks once again everyone Love Lynne |

03 Sep 10 - 08:38 AM (#2979199) Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat hugs requested: 13-yr-old with leukemia From: MBSLynne First I'd better say that all is still well. I wasn't very happy with the lack of any sort of communication from the school, or publicity of any sort about the efforts the girls made to raise money for a cancer charity. We hadn't even heard what the total amount raised was and the girls have now left that school. This morning I rang the school. Firstly, you will be pleased to hear that between them and with your help, they raised £350. However you will probably be as unimpressed as I was to find that the money has not yet been sent to the charity since the school says they were unsure where it was supposed to be going and who to send it to. I wonder how long they would have left it before following it up? I now have the job of checking to make sure it IS Clic Sergeant that Alicia chose, finding out where to send it and who the cheque should be made payable to. Then it will finally get to it's destination. I really feel the school could have been more help and should have encouraged the girls more in this. Oh well... Anyway, thank you all for your thoughts, hugs, wishes and donations. Love Lynne |
