Origins: Autumn Has Come (Shay Healy)

Nice song (if a wee bit sentimental!)that I found on a triple CD compilation of Paddy Reilly's - originally on the CD "The Town I Loved so Well". No credits on the CD I've got, so does anyone know who wrote it? Paddy himself or someone else?

AUTUMN HAS COME
(Shay Healy)
as sung by Paddy Reilly

When the crow's nest can be seen,
Autumn has come.
In the boughs of every tree,
Autumn has come.

And the branches bare of leaves now
Reach out with fingers gold,
For it's when the autumn comes
That love grows old.

How I wish that we were birds, love,
Autumn has come,
We would fly and find a summer,
Autumn has come.

And our youth would last for ever,
All the joys of life unfold,
There would be no autumn there
For love to grow old.

For your love I'd climb a mountain,
Autumn has come,
Search for you in every fountain,
Autumn has come.

And I'd waste the hours and minutes
I was able to control,
But the autumn's come at last
And love grows old.

Note from Joe Offer (27 May 2013): I have received an e-mail from Shay Healy, confirming that he wrote this song. He says, "'Come Up The Stairs' has been regarded as a traditional song, but again, I wrote it to the tune of a song my mother used to sing, as Gaeilge, "Taim In Arrears."

On the LP label (Dolphin DOLM 5010), it is credited to Shay Healy, Heathside Music.

Thanks Stewie.
Seems some of the early Matt McGinn songs were also copyrighted to Heathside Music.

Oh my God I've been searching for this song on the net forever, this is the first time it has come up. I only ever heard it on the vinyl album of "The Irish Beggarmen" that they recorded in the 60s or 70s, and have never heard it since. I've always wanted to know who wrote it because I wanted to perform and record it myself, and can never find it anywhere. The Beggarmen album was made before there were ever any song credits printed on albums, and to track down any of the members to ask them is a herculean task. I'm starting to think it's an old traditional with no known author. But who knows?

P.S. The Beggarmen version says "Love comes in" instead of "love grows old", at least as far as I can tell.

It's good to know that I am not the only one who spent hours trawling the net to find these words. Years ago I tried to capture the words off a grainy tape recording. I loved the song the moment I first heard it and often sang it to myself, especially as I walked to work on a fresh October morning. However it was always a frustration that I never knew the correct version. Now I do and always will.

Thanks to all

Here is Emmet Spiceland Folk Group singing Autumn Has Come, from their 1968 album, The First.

Nice version, and timely too, as we have a theme session on "changing seasons" coming up very shortly!

Yep, sang it this afternoon, and might do so again (to a different audience!) this evening.
It doesn't say anything about all the tress blowing down around us!

Incidentally, RIP Shay Healy, dear man is with his wife now. I first heard the song on the Irish Beggarmen Album that was live from O'Shaughnessey's, which my mother gave to the thrift shop (GRRRR) and now I can't find anywhere. If anyone can sell or make me a copy, please help me!

I could write the tune out for you, Copperjedi, if you care to send me a pm, (though you might have to sign up to Mudcat as a member to be able to do that!)
