Lewes Folk Festival: 7-10th October 2010

LEWES FOLK FESTIVAL 7 -10th OCTOBER 2010.
The two Lewes folk clubs are combining their efforts to promote this festival, largely based in their own clubrooms and other venues in the town. At the moment this is still in the early planning stages but watch this space and elsewhere for updates on the guests/programme etc. As the details are finalised, they will also appear on the festival's website at http://www.lewesfolkfest.org/

Damn & Blast, that's a week after we're down there for Wendy's gig at the Lewes Saturday Club.

Would have liked to go to a festival in Lewes, the hotbed of folkdom.

Is it really 7th October or perhaps november as the web site says?

October! You'd have to be an incurable optimist to put on anything like this in Lewes two days after The Fifth.

Does that not clash with Tenterden?

And with Banbury, unfortunately! (Though I suspect some Sussex locals will manage to get to both...?)

Ooops! Website corrected. (Nobody else noticed.)

No, it doesn't clash with Tenterden which is the week before.

I did check that we were not going to clash Tenterden - a lot of Lewes people are regular attenders there. The clash with Banbury is unfortunate - but with something around 300 folk festivals of various shapes and sizes in the UK and only 52 weekends in a year, some clashes are inevitable.

I wouldn't have thought the clash with Banbury, although unfortunate, would be too great a problem, since the nature of the two beasts are likely to be very different, unless I'm much mistaken?

BTW, Kitty - the dates you are quoting for Tenterden (2nd -4th October)are actually for this year. It looks likely that next year should be 1st=3rd.

And a good reason for coming to Lewes in October is the magnificent Old Ale produced by Harveys Brewery as one of their seasonal draught brews.

"any plans to accommodate caravans?"
None at present - rather thought that mid-October was outside the camping/caravanning season (though we are in October and the weather in Lewes today is like a hot summer's day).
We will give it thought, discuss it and post here some time in the future.

Thanks.

I'm amazed that you can find the time and energy when you and Valmai and others are actively involved in keeping up the standard at the Lewes clubs - plus the Folk Directory, sessions, etc. It makes me feel tired just to see it all going on!

More good news - tents can be accommodated at Spring Barn Farm on the outskirts of Lewes. The site has agreed to stay open for the Festival instead of closing at the end of September as usual. It's a bit far to walk carrying large instruments, but there are some buses in the day and it's a very short drive or taxi ride.

Interesting idea, not selling season tickets. No-one will be able to complain that they couldn't get in to something they wanted to. OTOH a lot of advance planning will be needed.

With many of the events taking place in pub function rooms, with a relatively small capacity, it would have been dangerous to sell season tickets and then find that the large majority of season ticket holders wanted to opt for one of the events.

It was more than that, however. I really like the idea that an audience commits itself to an event from beginning to end so that you get the feeling of building an atmosphere during an event and relating to things that have gone before. You cannot get this with transient audience and performers.

In many ways, Whitby is the finest folk festival in the country, but the one thing that it has against it is that, in the concerts, when you come to the end of one singer/musician's performance, you get a restlessness and often quite a change over of audience.

The worst example of this was a Saturday night concert at the Rugby club a few years ago - lasting four and a half hours; too long - we were the comperes and the opening act of this concert. I am convinced that the only people who were there for the whole show of this well-attended event were the two people on the sound desk and Tina and I; even the bar staff changed during the evening. At the end, I felt foolish thanking all the performers who had taken part in the concert when the only one there to hear me was the one who had finished the concert. One song had been sung by us at the beginning and then was sung by two others during the evening.

As Vic says, the idea at Lewes is to make sure that people can get into the events they've booked for. Booking in advance gets you a discount as well as assuring you a seat.

Yes, audience changeover can be very irritating. The concerts I went to at Whitby this year weren't like that - everyobdy started queueing at least half an hour before their chosen event and generally clung like grim death to their chairs for the duration, which was generally not more than three hours.

The Gosport and Fareham Easter Festival copes with this by having rolling concerts through the afternoon and evening with 15-minute gaps between acts, which means you can adjust your personal fluid levels without missing anything or annoying the people in the same row, or come in late. It allows the sound men plenty of time to adjust between acts as well. Even with the big venues they use it can still be impossible to get into very popular acts late in a concert.

The main point is that if anyone wants to come to Event 1 John Kirkpatrick and/or Event 13 Sussex Singers Night with The Copper Family then move quickly because there is only about a dozen tickets left for each.

I dropped some extra posters off at the Black Horse this afternoon and noticed that their guest beer is St. Austell's Proper Job. That'll help the tunes session there on Friday night.

There are two other very different events on Friday night: Shirley Collins's 'America Over The Water' illustrated presentation, and Seaford Folk Club's evening with guest performer Bagge Armer at the Royal Oak, Station Street, Lewes. Seaford's website says there are a few floor spots available.

It sounds as though the weekend worked really well.

Is there any chance of getting a campsite that is a little more central for next year. A mile or more is quite a way to walk and maybe there is a school or leisure centre closer to the town centre that would oblige; althopugh given that this is in term time this may not be straightforward.

But campers will always camp, no matter what the season!
