The two Lewes folk clubs are combining their efforts to promote this festival, largely based in their own clubrooms and other venues in the town. At the moment this is still in the early planning stages but watch this space and elsewhere for updates on the guests/programme etc. As the details are finalised, they will also appear on the festival's website at http://www.lewesfolkfest.org/ |

30 Sep 09 - 06:00 PM (#2735342) Subject: RE: LEWES FOLK FESTIVAL 7 -10th OCTOBER 2010 From: Vic Smith I did check that we were not going to clash Tenterden - a lot of Lewes people are regular attenders there. The clash with Banbury is unfortunate - but with something around 300 folk festivals of various shapes and sizes in the UK and only 52 weekends in a year, some clashes are inevitable. |

07 Sep 10 - 05:55 AM (#2981438) Subject: RE: Lewes Folk Festival: 7-10th October 2010 From: Vic Smith Mo wrote:- Interesting idea, not selling season tickets. With many of the events taking place in pub function rooms, with a relatively small capacity, it would have been dangerous to sell season tickets and then find that the large majority of season ticket holders wanted to opt for one of the events. It was more than that, however. I really like the idea that an audience commits itself to an event from beginning to end so that you get the feeling of building an atmosphere during an event and relating to things that have gone before. You cannot get this with transient audience and performers. In many ways, Whitby is the finest folk festival in the country, but the one thing that it has against it is that, in the concerts, when you come to the end of one singer/musician's performance, you get a restlessness and often quite a change over of audience. The worst example of this was a Saturday night concert at the Rugby club a few years ago - lasting four and a half hours; too long - we were the comperes and the opening act of this concert. I am convinced that the only people who were there for the whole show of this well-attended event were the two people on the sound desk and Tina and I; even the bar staff changed during the evening. At the end, I felt foolish thanking all the performers who had taken part in the concert when the only one there to hear me was the one who had finished the concert. One song had been sung by us at the beginning and then was sung by two others during the evening. |
08 Sep 10 - 05:47 AM (#2982178) Subject: RE: Lewes Folk Festival: 7-10th October 2010 From: Valmai Goodyear As Vic says, the idea at Lewes is to make sure that people can get into the events they've booked for. Booking in advance gets you a discount as well as assuring you a seat. Yes, audience changeover can be very irritating. The concerts I went to at Whitby this year weren't like that - everyobdy started queueing at least half an hour before their chosen event and generally clung like grim death to their chairs for the duration, which was generally not more than three hours. The Gosport and Fareham Easter Festival copes with this by having rolling concerts through the afternoon and evening with 15-minute gaps between acts, which means you can adjust your personal fluid levels without missing anything or annoying the people in the same row, or come in late. It allows the sound men plenty of time to adjust between acts as well. Even with the big venues they use it can still be impossible to get into very popular acts late in a concert. |

Is there any chance of getting a campsite that is a little more central for next year.
