05 Oct 09 - 03:23 PM (#2739045) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lough Sheelin's Shores From: Steve Gardham It doesn't feature on any of my vast indexes under that title. Apart from the one you mention the nearest thing on broadside is 'Lough Erin's Shore' which is also about leaving places and a sweetheart. John Moulden's yer man. Try asking on 'Tradsong' or on 'Indiana Ballad List'. That should get John involved. |

Cavan. His Gypsy Jazz style of playing in earlier days earned him the title of Cavan's Stephane Grappelli, but his biggest achievements are undoubtedly his own compositions; ranging from showband songs and local ballads to slow airs. Songs include; Lough Sheelin, The Convent Way up in the Hill and Ramblin' Irishman which was a big hit for Larry Cunningham. Another of his songs Show me the Road to Ireland was recorded by Joe Lynch and broadcast many times on his show on RTE Radio 1 Livin' with Lynch. John is regarded as a local treasure in the Cavan area.. He joins The Radio 1 Music Collection to tell us about his life as a shopkeeper and music maker. LOUGH SHEELIN tune by John McBreen (a Miss Cusack? wrote the lyric, and it was sung/recorded by John Hughes) around 1954? If ever I leave this land of mine, and journey across the sea, For one little spot I'll always pine, the one place I long to be. The mountains of Mourne are grand I know, as up to the heavens they soar But my heart will not be by mountains or sea, but down by Lough Sheelin's shore. For her beauty steals my breath away, every hour of the day When the sun is dancing or in the moonlight Down by Lough Sheelin's sandy shores my heart will always be The trout in its waters calm and clear, the fishermen standing by The dance of the gnat on every shore The rise to the taunted fly The sound of the gently lapping waves as I go drifting along That's heaven to me and my spirit soars free Just like the voice of a bird in song For her beauty steals my breath away, every hour of the day When the sun is dancing or in the moonlight Down by Lough Sheelin's sandy shores my heart will always be (This is my best effort in transcribing the lyric from the interview- any corrections?) maeve |

21 Nov 11 - 08:06 PM (#3261244) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lough Sheelin (John McBreen) From: GUEST,Tom (Guest) I was present when John Hughes recorded it in a garage studio in Rathfarnham in I think 1961. John had a lovely light tenor voice which soared in the chorus. The B side of the record was the 'Ballad of Johnny Doran' on which I had the privilege to contribute to the backing vocals. If anyone has the lyrics of this ballad I would love to have them. |
