cab abyone tell me how I go about editing a post once Iv'e posted it ... I cant find any obvious way to do it ? couldnt find an answer in the FAQ or Help menus either .

... I think that's the best you can hope for.

I once managed to get Jeri to edit one of mine.

Apart from that we just tend to point out our mistakes in later posts and let the record show things as they hapened.

Is that what others here perceive to be the case too?

This is the feature I most wish the Mudcat had, but I think it's probably very complicated and would require recoding the way the whole website is set up.

Even with Mozilla's built-in spell checkers and the preview feature, I find I'm constantly sending out posts and then discovering my sily typoos.

Often I've written my posts as e-mails to myself so that spellcheck with catch the error. Then I just cut and paste.

I am one of the joe clones aka moderator to whom you may write if you need a correction. Generally we do not remove what you've already posted unless it is a regrettable personal attack, info which shouldn't be public or some such.

As Lox noted, though, the easiest and probably quickest way is to note it in a new posting immediately after the goof and one of us will see it and fix it.

IF you do write to one of us PLEASE remember to copy and paste the thread address from your browser and/or at least give us the title of the thread and time/date of your posting and be clear about what needs changing.

I've made mistakes (some quite silly) in posts but I've usually managed to post subsequent amendments; I'm also happy to accept responsibility to properly edit before I post. The lack of ability to edit 'publicly uttered' comments is one of Mudcat's strengths if you have an interest in how discussions evolve and the history of threads' contents.

I am a compulsive proofreader, and to that end I have the habit--which I highly recommend--of using the Preview feature before submitting a post.

I find that the change in typeface in the Previewed text helps me see the content as it really is, not what I intended. That is not to claim that I always do so, nor that I always catch the goofs, but it helps a lot.

Now I realize that many people would never, never, never do that, as evidenced by the fact that they refer to mistypings that they know they've made just a word or three back, or "DAMN CAPSLOCK!", when they could easily go back and change just a very few words. But for those who take a little pride in the picture of themselves they are presenting, the Preview feature is a wonderful thing.

Joe also has said just copy, fix, and re-post the post, thereby making the first one a dupe. A mod may see it, and remove the first post with the mistakes.

As one who can neither type nor spell, and often think my obnoxious quips to be witty untill after I post them, I find it an issue, however you will find the catters tend to be purists and on such matters and less than sympathetic to slobs like us! I dont think I can blame them!

I, like Uncle Dave, am given to proofreading, but still some goofs manage to get through.

On a one-liner or very short post, I will type it in the message box and read it over (generally previewing it) before I submit. But if it's a longer one (which is often my wont), I type it into Microsoft Word (any word processor will do), check it there, and when proofread, I cut-and-paste it into the message box.

But as I say, I often miss a few and the furschlugginer typos still manage to get through.

About the only way I can catch them all in a piece of writing is to let is sit for a couple of days, then read it. The typos jump right out. But when an exchange is going on a thread, letting it sit often misses "the moment" and it's no longer relevant.

What Don Firth says goes for me too.

When in doubt, I may leave it out, or post it the next morning, by which time the discussion has often died away. (My carefully phrased post often remains the last one on a thread. Then I wonder if anyone actually read it, or if they were so tired of the topic they didn't open the thread again. Or maybe I'm so boring that everyone prefers to let the thread die after I chime in.)

When I do post in haste, like today, I very often repent at leisure.

Two or three times, when posting an amendment wouldn't do (e.g. with a confusing error I didn't notice until after five other posters had commented, or forgetting to sign my name on a sympathy thread) I PM'd to request a correction, the way Katlaughing suggested, and kindly MudElves answered my prayers.

Freedom to self-edit one's own posts would be a mixed blessing.

The US Congress conducts its sessions, then the proceedings are published in the Federal Register. But BEFORE they are published, members are are allowed to "revise and extend" their remarks, so the published version often bears little resemblance to what was actually said.
I suppose this makes a 'certain' amount of sense for such a group, where the 'official' record needs tidying, but here I think we need a compromise such as we have. Serious typos CAN be corrected by a few editors..(and often are, even before requests)...but there are always those who would abuse the privilege...especially below the line in 'those' discussions.

   The "preview" button, if used, can head off most typos, and the simple trick of typing in another program, then doing a quick copy & paste, will do even better.

For those who, like **ME**, often make silly dyslexic-like spelling errors, I regularly recommend TinySpell, a little program (PC-Windows) which will follow you as you tryp (see!) and beep at you for mistakes. It is really, really easy to use. (I am typing this in Firefox, which now has spell checking built in...with underlining....added protection.)
