Lyr Req/Add: Hey What About Me (Scott McKenzie)

I'm looking for the lyrics to Hey what About Me (I'm not sure of title) as sung by Ian and Sylvia way back when. The BGrass-L folks are talking a lot about Ian Tyson right now and this song has always come to mind when I join a jam or song circle.

"Please let me in when you're singing your song And I'll just sit quiet, I won't try to sing along."

Cathy, I don't know if this will help or not, but click here for lyrics to some Ian Tyson songs. I can't remember the name of the song you're asking about, but I can hear parts of it way back in the recesses of my skull. Maybe it will come back to me later.

Ian & Sylvia recorded the song on PLAY ONE MORE (Vanguard), released in 1966. It was written by Scott MacKenzie, who himself had some success later with a John Phillips song about going to San Francisco with flowers in your hair.

It'll take a little typing, but I can't resist. An old favorite of mine!

HEY, WHAT ABOUT ME?
(Scott McKenzie)

Chorus:
Hey ---- What about me?
I've got some feelin's on my mind, too.
Hey ---- What about me?
I'd like to have a song to sing, too.

Well, it's gettin' mighty cold on this lonesome old street,
And I don't know the faces of anyone I meet.
But your faces look so happy when you sing,
Please let me in, I've got one more face to bring.

Please let me in where you're singing your songs
And I'll just sit quiet, I won't try to sing along.
You've got the warmest place that I've ever found
Please let me in and I won't make a sound.

But if you should ask me to give you a song
I won't know the words to use, I won't know where they belong
But if you give me one of yours I will make it my own
And it will be the sweetest song that I've ever known.

Chords for the chorus: (G,D,C -all on the word Hey - G)
(G, A7, D7) (G,D,C -again on the word Hey - G) (G, Bm, C, D, G).

Chords for the verses: (G, D, C, G) (G, Bm, C, D) (G, D, C, G) (G, Bm, C, D, G)

Talk about a folk circle song...

The song was also a "mini hit" (i.e got some radio play) for another Canadian, Anne Murray.

14 years after these lyrics were posted, I got to look out the window of my NYC apartment into the snow and sing it out loud to myself.

Thanks for posting whoever you are.....
