Every now and then, I would see him staring at them with tears streaming down his face. As mine are now. Beautiful song. Lest we forget. PS... he removed the poppies in late fall one year and passed away in late December. |

21 Oct 09 - 09:54 AM (#2749429) Subject: RE: Remembrance Day From: eddie1 Would love to make contact with the singer. If he agrees, I'd like to use this in a radio spot nearer the time. I remember being told by a Royal British Legion officer that 1968 is the only year since the end of WWII without a British serviceman or woman being killed on active service somewhere in the world! This is not meant in any way to glorify war or suggest Britain lost more then other countries - it's just a fact. Eddie |

21 Oct 09 - 12:56 PM (#2749543) Subject: RE: Remembrance Day From: GUEST,mg I hope to continue to call it Armistice Day..but whatever is nice. Here is my song for Korean War veterans...tune is Dainty Davy mostly. Those we left there in the cold we remember we remember Have no fears of growing old oh do we remember Those who fell in prison yards.. Savage weather savage guards.. Those who died face down in mud.. Asian soil Yankee blood.. Those whose names we can't forget Comrade spirits with us yet.. Heartbreak Ridge and Pork Chop Hill If we don't honor them who will Those who died when far too young It is for them this song is sung oh do we remember And November 1 9 p.m. your time is Watchfires..just go out and light a fire or candle or anything and shine it up to the sky. mg |

24 Oct 09 - 12:07 PM (#2751706) Subject: RE: Remembrance Day From: gnu Nov 11... in my 40 odd years living in New Brunswick, I have only seen a few of those days with good weather. Usually, it's cold with rain and/or snow. A half dozen years ago or so, there was a great debate about continuing to hold the ceremonies at The Cenotaph or in the Coliseum where it's warm and dry. It ended when one vet wrote a letter to the editor that said, in a nutshell... I slept in a puddle in the cold with a wet blanket and I was damn glad to have the blanket... some didn't. Why should I have to be cold and wet again? Lest we forget. |

26 Oct 09 - 07:01 AM (#2752828) Subject: RE: Remembrance Day From: nutty I put a tune to this poem and sing it every November. It is always very well received. The Convalescent by Robert Service . . . So I walked among the willows very quietly all night; There was no moon at all, at all; no timid star alight; There was no light at all, at all; I wint from tree to tree, And I called him as his mother called, but he nivver answered me. Oh I called him all the night-time, as I walked the wood alone; And I listened and I listened, but I nivver heard a moan; Then I found him at the dawnin', when the sorry sky was red: I was lookin' for the livin', but I only found the dead. Sure I know that it was Shamus by the silver cross he wore; But the bugles they were callin', and I heard the cannon roar. Oh I had no time to tarry, so I said a little prayer, And I clasped his hands together, and I left him lyin' there. Now the birds are singin', singin', and I'm home in Donegal, And it's Springtime, and I'm thinkin' that I only dreamed it all; I dreamed about that evil wood, all crowded with its dead, Where I knelt beside me brother when the battle-dawn was red. Where I prayed beside me brother ere I wint to fight anew: Such dreams as these are evil dreams; I can't believe it's true. Where all is love and laughter, sure it's hard to think of loss . . . But mother's sayin' nothin', and she clasps — a silver cross. |

And when the Parliament or Congress or whatever comes around saying, "We just can't afford to care for our veterans" remind them that it was THEY who sent them out, 'cause they sure wouldn't voluntarily walk into Hell. Remind them of missing jaws and traumatically amputated limbs, of blindness and traumatic brain injury, of deafness and PTSD, of the lives ruined on and off the battle field. Then ask them if they can EVER repay the debt. |
