Poor Jacqui. The Captain has been fasting since last night and can't have his coffee this morning.

Good news folk1e.

I'm just back home for a while before going to pick Kendall up from surgery. Lobster is cooling in preparation for the lobster roll he will be having for lunch. He deserves it.

We didn't get a call last week to let us know what time his surgery would be - I wasn't too well and didn't think about it until it was too late and no-one was answering phones over the weekend. As a result we were up before 6.00am and at the surgical unit at 7.00am, only to be told that his surgery was scheduled for 9.40am. Bear in mind - no coffee, no breakfast this morning. Anyway, we came back home for a while, I took the dog to the beach and Kendall sat and watched 60 minutes and fumed.

Back to the unit for 8.30. Sat in the waiting room for about 30 minutes and then were called in. Lovely nurse looked after us, got Kendall into regulation hospital outfit - gown and socks, but no hat this time, checked his vitals and put the IV in his arm.

We then waited, and waited. About 10.30 Kendall asked when he would be going in - nurse went away and came back to say that the first surgery on his consultant's list, which was scheduled for an hour and a half, had hit complications and that it would be another hour or so before they could get to Kendall. We decided to reschedule as Kendall by this time was changing from Dr Jekyll to Mr Hyde. IV came out, Kendall got dressed and then nurse came back in to say that the consultant was insisting that this biopsy be done today.

Back into hospital gear, IV back in, and at that point Kendall sent me off to buy the promised lobster while he waited and fumed.

That's it for now - I've cooked his lobster and put a pot of coffee ready to go on. Once I've pulled the poor crustacean apart I'll head back to the unti to wait.

09 Nov 09 - 12:41 PM (#2762854)
Subject: RE: BS: Another biopsy
From: Ebbie

The "poor crustacean'? Tear him apart? Surely, surely, Jacqui, that is an extreme response? You knew he was crusty before you married him...

Update.

We just got back and he's sitting in his recliner with his lobster rolls and a cup of regular coffee to hand. Seamus is giving him his undivided attention, at least until the lobster is all gone. Kendall has his remote close by and, apart from feeling a bit woozy, all is right with his world at the moment.

The consultant called me - they got a couple of good samples and we should get the results by the end of the week.

End of the week? You're at the wrong place! Karen is a Senior Lead Histotech at Mt. Carmel (4 hospitals in Columbus) and that lab processes biopsies really fast......Full series, not just frozens.   Anything submitted today by 8 PM is ready for a pathologist (on their desk and ready to read) tomorrow morning at 9AM. They're one of the very few labs that operates a full staff night shift to get the majority of the production work done.

Anyway, I'm holding my best thoughts for all to be well and I am so sorry you were rolled by a lobster. Say, ask Sinsull how many miles you travelled huh?

My biopsy results were to take "a week to ten days" and I didn't get a call. I got an appointment... 16 days.

Hmmmm... I have frozen lobster. Bought some of the stuff in the vacuum plastic on sale. FAR better than the canned stuff because there is much less water and salt.

Lucky Kendall at only being coffee-deprived for a matter of hours (too damned many, I know!) -- Tom's last coffee was an after dinner Lebanese coffee the evening before his Oct. 20th cancer surgery.

Ah gnu! That is pathetic!

I wonder if Canada will allow for lobsters shipped across the border? I know they allow well behaved gnus to cross the border. Then you could meet a real lobster. Kendall might even hypnotize one for you.

I will explain how many miles you have travelled when we are face to face, Kendall. It's a Spaw thing.

No, no, no, no, no!!!

Frozen lobster is for when the shops are closed.... you know, in an emergency.

We get fine lobster here, albeit more exspensive. And, I have hypnotized them as well. Even clams.

Subject: RE: BS: Another biopsy
From: Bill D

for you, Kendall...you can either eat him or wrestle him or make up a story about him.

"The largest lobster on record, according to the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records, is 44 pounds, 6 ounces, 3 feet 6 inches from the end of tail fan to tip of largest claw. The oldest lobster on record is believed to be around 100 years old. Since the only way to judge a lobsters age is by it's size, any figure relevant to the age of a lobster is just a guess. There's no way to really tell. It is believed that they could live as long as 150 years. But no one knows for sure."

There is a lot more to you than this one thing and we love all of you, want you to be here, and wish you WELL, now! Or, it went something like that, plus a few blankety-blanks at whatever deity...well not really, ya know I can't chew out the Great Spirit, but anyway, that's what I wish for you a GREAT spirit as you go across whatever valley...those roads into Boston can be scary...and know that we are here for you and love you. Hi kendall and crowd !!

I have been steered ever so gently here from another thread.

I know that this is a parallel thread and many of the people share both.

I have suffered from throat cancer too so I know only too well the roller-coaster ride that you are facing.

I am from England and came through the British National Heath Service - even though I did have private health insurance!!

So I don't know much about your American service and even less ( nothing ) about Dr Zeiter. My advice is to have complete trust and faith in him and his assistants etc.

I too know the blow that can come from a situation where is appeared that the C had been cured ; only to raise it's horrible head anew.

Then more treatment and more aggressive.

But I have come out of it and have now been pronounced completely clear and " formally excomunicated " from the hospital that provided all my treatment.

I have been pronounced clear now for five years and my life is now almost back to where it was before the problem. I say almost because I am now about 15 years older and so much wiser....!!!

Get well soon Kendal...

I am in your corner with you ....

Regards

MikeL

ull of entertainment factor especially when held within reasonable proximity to Mr. Spaw's posterior. Guess what he's had for dinner from the changes in flame color.

Hours of amusement.

We just got back from Boston at 9.15.

We had a good meeting with Dr Zeitels and his staff - Kendall will be going in for a procedure to remove the cancer on January 14th and then Dr Zeitels will be looking to make sure that the cancer is contained and that Kendall's cords are in the best possible shape for work to give him more voice. Dr Zeitels said that Kendall is a suitable candidate, once his cords are stabilised, for the new procedure that is going to be started within the next two years - the materiel for this is now in production and, because they do not intend to market the materiel, but simply to use it themselves, FDA approval should only take a matter of 30 days.

While we were waiting for a voice assessment session Kendall developed a red blotchy rash on his hands, face and torso. He was very hot and had blurred vision. I thought that it might be an allergic reaction to one of the sprays that were used before the tube was put into his nostril and called for some help. We ended up with a roomful of firemen and paramedics and Kendall was carted off in an ambulance to the emergency room at Mass General. By this time Kendall was in real pain from the itching and was put onto an IV with all sorts of stuff to try and reduce the reaction. Luckily the rash subsided and he was sprung from the hospital at about 6.50, just in time to make a mad dash for the 7.15 coach. We have instructions for what to do if the rash comes back and we have an appointment with his doctor tomorrow morning to start an investigation as to what he reacted to.

Right now, it's time to just relax and get some sleep.

SO glad you are home and the news sounds good! If his feet are too itchy, put some ice bags on them...it works! Thanks for taking the time to let us know how it went. I hope you both get lost of deep rest, tonight.

The news sounds good to me! At first reading, the rash had some of the signs of Shingles. Truthfully Kendall, if you haven't had a Shingles shot, you need one. For those over 60 the odds and consequences and pain of Shingles go up. Shingles info from the Mayo Clinic.

I am truly happy and as you know, this whole damn place will be with you in January too!!!

The wedding rings are a long story, but its going to be a Christmas surprise to my best friend that I married in '86.

Very good news apart from the allergic reaction. Sure it wasn't just nerves? My Andie used to break out in horrible hives when she was under major stress. He has been under a lot of pressure of worry. I know he seems all smooth on the surface, but maybe he is like a duck, paddling for all he's worth underneath.

Kat is spot on with the ice packs. dampen and freeze some tea towels and you can mold them around different affected areas.

Spaw - that shingles thing is worrying. TSO's Mum had last year at 81 and she suffered a good deal. His dad has (what the very young GP is calling) ecxema but I think it is shingles. Because: it came on so suddenly, he is in terrible discomfort, cannot handle pressure or brushing of fabric against affected areas, keeps getting a bad chill. He is 90 and he nursed his wife when she had it last year. We are going to ring the parents and recommend they seek a second opinion and to give all the info, especially Pam's case last year.

Kendall getting some of his voice back will be fantastic. Maybe around the time I can finally get to the north east USA I will hear a tall tale, mayhaps even a song.

hi jacqui

Great to hear the good news.....

Hope they can find the cause of the allergy soon...strangely enoughI had a couple of allergic re-actions during my treatmenat but nothing as intense as Kendals....they never have nailed down the cause.....occasionally I do get an outbreak but I have the medication ready and it clears almost instantly.

You are in good hands...

I'm batting for you..

regards

Mike

Virginia Tam, there are few things I'd rather be able to do than to sing you a song, or tell you a story.

I'm back to normal...well, normal for me; and one thing they suggested that I write on the back of my drivers license, ALLERGIC TO LIDOCAINE. I did.

I'm just glad it happened at the doctor's office and not when we were on the coach heading home. As it was, it scared the life out of me to see Kendall in such distress, particularly knowing the way that allergic reactions can go.

Oh dear Kendall. I didn't mean for me especially. Just that I would look forward to any sessions in which you may be performing, when I finally get to a Getaway or visit New England and beyond.

Also expressing hope for recovery of your voice.

What a frightening way to wrap up a long day!

Geez - you two sure know how to get the most out of a day though, don't you? From "waiting game" trepidation to eager hopeful anticipation for meeting Dr Z. to surprise hives to Grammy nominations! Jacqui, how many times did you ask, "How you doing?" on the bus ride home before he got up and took another seat?

Sounds VERY hopeful! Hooray!

VT - I don't think you offended Kendall - there really are very few things that he would want to do than to tell stories and sing again, to you or to anyone else. He misses that voice, as do we all.

KT - He was very good, put up with my ministrations pretty well - I think that they may have put a sedative in the mix, though!
